in a 2012, scientists investigated the biological diversity
in belly buttons of 60 people. They identified a total of
2,368 different species living in belly buttons! While the
average person had 67 species swarming around in
there.
Many mammals have no belly button at all. Most of
them as well as certain humans have their navels
obscured by fur, fade over time, or have a thin scar or
small bump instead.
Belly button piercing takes from six months to a year to
heal. During all this time it should be kept dry and clean
to avoid infection, the signs of which are throbbing pain,
redness and swelling, and discharge.
Gazing at your own navel was a form of meditation of
Greek Christian monks of Mount Athos. They used a
specific method of “navel contemplation” called
Hesychasm, believing it gives a broader insight into
divine glory.
“Omphaloskepsis” is the scientific term for navel-
gazing.
