Leicester’s Historic Victory Has Stunned World Soccer

If sport is a quest for the epic then this English premiership football season is one for the ages. Little Leicester City has spent most of its 132 years flitting between the top two tiers of English football. Their best-ever finish to a season came when they finished second in 1929. Last year only an end-of-season rally allowed them to avoid being relegated from England’s top flight yet again. And when this season began, almost every pundit assumed the Foxes, as Leicester are known, would again, at best, be embroiled in a dog-fight to avoid relegation. That has been Leicester’s way; that has always been Leicester’s fate.
Even the appointment of Claudio Ranieri, a 64 year-old Italian, as manager did little to inspire confidence. Ranieri’s peripatetic 30 years in management had seen him take command at no fewer than 15 clubs in Italy, Spain, France and England without every winning a title. He was respected as a nice guy who always finished, at best, second. In Italy, Jose Mourinho, then in charge at Internazionale, had mocked Ranieri as “Zero Tituli” – “No Titles”.

Revenge is a dish to be savoured, however, and certainly not one to be rushed. Ranieri has had the last laugh and no-one, anywhere, can begrudge him it. He has taken a team of no-hopers and led them to the kind of glory that’s so improbable it belongs to the realm of fanciful Hollywood movies. No-one in English football has seen anything like this in the modern age. It is a year that will never be forgotten.
Unlike American sport, European soccer is based on ruthless meritocratic principles. There is no draft to assist weaker teams, no salary-cap to minimise the advantage enjoyed by large-market teams. Television money is shared, but not on an equal basis. If American sport is organised, at least to some extent, on the Marxist principle of “to everyone according to their needs, from everyone according to their means”, European soccer prefers the bracing clarity of the free-est of free markets.
That’s why suggestions Leicester’s run to glory is akin to a major league baseball or NFL team’s progression from last-to-first in a single year miss the mark. A much more fitting comparison is with college football. Leicester’s race to the English title is like Northern Illinois or Tulsa defeating Alabama, Ohio State, LSU and Florida State en route to winning the college football national championship. The kind of thing, in other words, that doesn’t happen because it cannot happen. It stretches your power of disbelief beyond breaking point.
Leicester’s wage bill of around £50m this year is barely a quarter of what clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal have spent. It is an iron law of modern soccer that money buys success. The global free market in players allows the wealthiest sides to purchase the world’s best players. High-end talent is concentrated like never before.
The results have been predictable. In England, every championship since 1996 has been won by one of the five wealthiest sides. In Germany, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have, between them, won 18 of the past 22 titles. In Italy, the ‘Big Three’ of Juventus, Internazionale and AC Milan have won all but two of the championships held since 1991 while in Spain either Barcelona or Real Madrid has won 26 of the last 31 titles. Moreover, most of the gatecrashers in this period – clubs such as Roma in Italy or Atletico Madrid in Spain – have been large clubs capable of dreaming that the title might one day be there’s. They have not, in the main, been provincial nobodies like Leicester.
Leicester’s success is a throwback in another way, too. Ranieri’s side lacks the ability to play the Barcelona way, so they do not try to. Ever since Barcelona – and, on the international stage, Spain – first bewitched the world, controlling possession has been the trendiest, most fashionable, concept in soccer. Barcelona’s “tiki-taka” style is inspired by a simple idea: if your opponents do not have the ball, they cannot score.
Leicester do not play that way. Only two premiership sides have held the ball for less time than Leicester this season. On average this season, Leicester have had the ball for just 43 percent of the time. Instead their triumph has been built upon a rock-solid defence and lightning-fast counter-attacks. The speed with which Leicester attack when they do have the ball has confounded opponents all season long. Ranieri’s tactical astuteness has been married to an unquenchable never-say-die spirit that has kept Leicester afloat long past the point at which it had been assumed they must sink and drown. Everyone is a believer now; everyone feels a little better for being a soccer fan because of Leicester City’s achievement this season. They have reminded us what sport is all about.
And all this has been achieved by a team of cast-offs, misfits, and journeymen. No-one else wanted Leicester’s players; if they had these players would not have been at Leicester. N’Golo Kante, the leading tackler in the league this season, was playing in the French eighth division five years ago. His performances for the Foxes have made him, in the view of the legendary Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson the best player in England’s top-flight “by a long way”. Kannte’s story is typical of the Leicester fairytale. Riyadh Mahrez, named the player’s MVP last month, cost Leicester just £400,000 — or less than Europe’s richest players make in a week — and began his career in the French seventh division. Jamie Vardy, Leicester’s chief goalscorer, was until recently playing non-league football and working in a factory making medical splints. He’s now an England international.
Like many of Leicester’s players, Vardy was released by a bigger club earlier in his career. Almost without exception Ranieri’s players have experienced the bitter reality of rejection. For years they were told they weren’t good enough, as individuals, to play in the upper echelons of European football. Collectively, they have used this to their advantage. The longer Leicester’s improbable challenge lasted the greater the expectation that they would choke, leaving nothing but the wistful memory of what might have been.
But, guided by the unflappable Ranieri, Leicester has shrugged-off pressure that might have crippled another side. They weren’t “supposed” to be here, so they might as well enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts. Paradoxically, it has been easier for Leicester to cope with the pressure than it might have been for, say, a side like Liverpool weighted down with history and the need to rekindle the memory of past glories by winning the title for the first time in more than 20 years.
Of course they have enjoyed some good fortune. Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea went off the rails early in the season, leading to the Portuguese manager’s dismissal. Arsene Wenger’s powers of inspiration at Arsenal appear exhausted. Manchester United have still not successfully managed to replace Alex Ferguson, the greatest manager of the modern era. Most of England’s wealthiest clubs have, for reasons unconnected to Leicester, struggled this season. Even so, no-one but no-one thought Leicester could be the club to take advantage of this weakness.
It shouldn’t make sense. It still doesn’t make sense. As Ranieri has said, “Once in [a] life, it could happen. This is football. Every fifty years a little team with less money beats the biggest. Once.” That’s why this season has been so special. Even if reality returns with a vengeance next season and English football is once again dominated by the biggest battalions no-one will ever forget these little Foxes. They have rewritten the rulebook and, in the process, reminded us all of what sport is really all about: the joyous search for glory. It has been a thrilling, heartwarming, ride all the way to the finish line. An epic adventure of the kind that’s supposed to be impossible. No wonder it has captured the imagination of soccer fans across the world. This is what it’s supposed to be about. This is it.

'I will be king of Nigeria if I win the FA Cup' - Watford striker Odion Ighalo

Super Eagles of Nigeria and Watford FC of England striker Odion Ighalo has bragged that he will be dubbed 'king of Nigeria' if he wins the F.A Cup.
Watford alongside Everton, Man U, and Crystal Palace are in the semi- finals of the English F.A Cup with Watford's game to be played on Sunday, and Ighalo says winning the F.A cup will be an illustrious end to the season after rejecting a £10m move to China last year.
''I chose my dream first before money,”
“Though I am not rich, I am blessed,” Ighalo, a devout Christian, says. “I know in the future I can make more money if I do well so I keep cool. I want to prove myself.'' Ighalo told The Telegraph UK.
“I believe in God and I prayed when I faced that situation. I am happy that I turned it down and it’s really helped me grow as a person. Yes, it was big money. A lot of money. But I want to keep going in my career. This is a dream come true so to leave the Premier League and go to China was not the right thing.
“And I know I can earn good money here if I prove myself. Maybe other offers will come, maybe with even more money but I have four more years of contract here after this season and I am happy. I’m improving. When I joined Watford I thought they had what it takes to get promoted to the Premier League. That’s why I joined. I wanted that opportunity.”
“If I win the FA Cup then I will be going back like a king! King of Nigeria!,”
“The fans want it and we want it.
“This is a big competition here in England. Now we are safe in the Premier League and although we want to do better this semi-final is a very big thing. It’s a chance for people to have a look at us and understand how we have done.
“Not every team in the Premier League can win it but they can win the FA Cup. No-one gave Watford a chance of being where we are today but we are there now and it’s possible for us to win and go to the final.”
He added: “As a footballer it is all the more special because it is played at Wembley, a great stadium, the great stadium of English football and one that I have not played in before. So that means a lot.
“The fans are happy also because they can say they will have a team in the Premier League next season and they have this semi-final.
“If we play the way we can play we will be able to give them a final to look forward to as well. It would be a dream come true.”
“I watched the finals – I remember big teams like Manchester United and Chelsea playing at Wembley so it means a lot to me to have the chance to get to a final,” Ighalo says. “And I’ve never played in a cup final before, not at any level, not even as a boy, never.”

Former FIFA Official Mayne-Nicholls Ban Has Been Reduced

Former FIFA official Harold Mayne-Nicholls has had a seven-year football ban reduced to three years on appeal, the FIFA appeal committee said on Friday.

The committee ruled on Friday that the original ban imposed on the former head of the FIFA evaluation committee by football governing body’s ethics committee was too harsh.

Mayne-Nicholls, 54, had been under investigation in connection with the awards to Russia and Qatar of the World Cups in 2018 and 2022 respectively.

The ethics committee had ruled that Mayne-Nicholls, also a former president of the Chilean Football Association, asked for personal favours in connection with one of the bids.(dpa/NAN)

Grills2Grills: Nigeria's Ultimate Automobile & Bike show is here!

Grills2Grills, Nigeria’s ultimate automobile and bike show, opens to the public over the weekend of April 2nd and 3rd, 2016, as a one-of-its-kind Nigerian exhibition of unique classic cars, super cars, muscle cars and motorbikes from private collectors and owners in Nigeria.

The event will hold at the Main Bowl of Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos. Nigeria is a country that has cars and bikes ingrained in the fabric of its culture & it remains a relevant market for the automobile and bike industry.

Grills2Grills seeks to reiterate and emphasise that culture by creating an exciting environment where owners and collectors of rare and interesting automobiles and motorbikes showcase their cars and bikes for car enthusiasts and the general public in a fun and family-friendly atmosphere.

According to Dapo Otunla, founder of Grills2Grills, the intention is to hold the event annually with the hope that Grills2Grills will become a landmark event that will bring people from across the globe to Lagos State, Nigeria.

The event will further cement the vibrant outlook of Lagos as a foremost city and state in Africa. The two-day event will showcase up close, an assembly of about 70 cars and 20 motorbikes that are rare and unique, giving guests close access in a way they may not have experienced before.

Some of the unique cars that will be showcased at the event are:
1.    MG MIDGET (1977):  The MG Midget is a small two-seater sports car that was produced by MG from 1961 to 1979.  The first version was essentially a slightly more expensive badge-engineered version of the MkII Austin-Healey Sprite.
2.    DODGE CHALLENGER (2008):  The Dodge Challenger is the name of three different generations of American automobiles produced by Dodge.  All (7,119) 2008 models were SRT8s and equipped with the 6.1 L (370 cu in) Hemi and a 5-speed AutoStick automatic transmission.  It is the modern day muscle car.
3.    LOTUS ELISE: The Lotus Elise is a two-seat, rear-wheel drive, mid-engined roadster conceived in early 1994 and released in September 1996 by the British manufacturer Lotus Cars. The car has a hand-finished fibreglass body shell atop its bonded extruded aluminium chassis that provides a rigid platform for the suspension.
4.    LAMBORGHINI MURCIÉLAGO:  This is a sports car produced by Italian automaker Lamborghini.  It is the successor to the popular Diablo and flagship of the automaker's lineup. The automaker's first new design in eleven years, the car was also the brand's first new model under the ownership of German parent company Audi, which is owned by Volkswagen.
5.    MERCEDES 220 SE COUPE CONVERTIBLE (1965): The date of the introduction of the W111 Series Mercedes 220 SE Coupe was carefully chosen. It was not as usual an international automobile show; this time it was the opening of the Daimler-Benz Museum in Stuttgart-Untertrkheim on Feb. 24th, 1961 and the celebration of the company's 75th anniversary. With its pillar-less side glass, a hallmark of almost all coupes coming out of Stuttgart in future, and wraparound front and rear windows, the car was a statement of exquisite taste and should remain in production till 1971.
6.    VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE ("THE BUG"): The Bug is a two-door, four passenger, rear-engine economy car manufactured and marketed by German automaker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003.
The need for this kind of car, and its functional objectives, were formulated by a Jewish engineer who had his original idea stolen by Adolf Hitler after seeing the car at an auto show.  The subsequent mass production made it a household vehicle.

Gomez: We Were Stupid To Lose To England

tmp_12430-gomez197317786
Mario Gomez has said Germany were stupid to throw away their two goal lead in the 3-2 loss to England.
Gomez scored his first international goal since the Euro 2012 and had another wrongly ruled offside.
England fought back, with Kane, Vardy and Dier completing the comeback.
Germany now face Italy in Munich and Gomez is wary of his side repeating the same errors against a country who have not lost in their last seven matches against Die Mannschaft.
“I think that we set ourselves up in the right way but in spite of that, it is perhaps natural to take your foot off the gas when you are 2-0 up in a friendly,” the Besiktas striker, on loan from Fiorentina, told the DFB’s official website.
“It’s just how it is. We gave England a lot of room and they are blessed with a lot of individual quality. We were stupid to have lost this game.
“We lost our way and left too much space, which England used well. They scored two goals from set plays. We knew they would be dangerous from those situations and they showed that.”
He added: “We weren’t good in the last 30 minutes and we need to look at that. We have to remain focused over the full 90 minutes, even if we are 2-0 up.
“We can’t let it happen again as teams like England can take full advantage. In a major tournament, that results in you going home. That much is clear to us.
“Italy will obviously be a tough game as they have a good team and traditionally play very well against Germany. I think it’s important to play well and get a good result to begin our preparations for the summer in a positive way.”

Governor Nasir El-Rufai Calls Egypt’s Equaliser Against Nigeria a Cheat

Nasir El-Rufai - July 2014 - BN News - BellaNaija.com 01

Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state, has said the Pharaohs of Egypt equaliser against the Super Eagles during the 2017 AFCON qualifier played at Ahmadu Bello Stadium on Friday was not in the spirit of fair play.

El-Rufai made the remark at a dinner he held in honour of the Super Eagles on Friday night at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna.
According to him, the centre referee ought to have detected that the Egyptian goal
scorer, Mohamed Salah was in the offside position.

The Super Eagles’ Oghenekaro Etebo scored the curtain raiser at the 60th minute of the match.
The governor said that the Eagles played an excellent game and assured them that Kaduna fans would always support them in all their matches played in the state capital.

“You played excellent football. You were in control 65 per cent of the time; but perhaps the god of football was not on our side today.”

“We have said to you that you will not lose a match in Kaduna and you have not lost.” he said.
El-Rufai said he had no doubt that the Eagles would beat the Egyptians on March 29 at their own soil in the return leg of the match.

Also speaking, the Minister of Sport and Youth Development, Solomon Dalong said though the Eagles drew 1-1 with the Egyptians, the match was not a total loss.

“Even if it was a loss, it is good to lose once in a while as no human is an angel and a loss once in a while makes one stronger to work harder.’’

He said that the Eagles did their best and should not worry of the last minute disappointment.
He said that the Nigerian players would not have left the stadium in one piece if the fans were satisfied with their performance, considering the crowd at the stadium.

The Minister concurred with the governor’s remark that the god of football was not on the side of the Eagles
He promised that the ministry would also always support the national team.

Dignitaries that attended the dinner included the President, Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinick, the interim coach of the national team, Samson Siasia and the team’s captain Mikel Obi.

4 things Nigerian girls who love Football should know

The general notion is that girls, Nigerian or not, do not like football. And so, most people find it a hard pill to swallow when they find females who not only have genuine knowledge of the sport but love and feel the exact same way men are supposed to feel about the sport.
The truth is, there are millions of real female football fans out there, but due to the reaction they get from both men and women who are mystified by them, they keep their passion under wraps. To shed light on this issue, Jovago.com, Africa’s No.1 online hotel booking portal shares 5 things Nigerian girls who love football should know.
598750-kilburn-football-club
  • Everyone will not take your passion seriously
Most women who love football in Nigeria need to keep in mind that most people will not take their love for football seriously, based on their gender. From as early as primary school, football teams are restricted to boys while girls are recommended for ‘softer’ sports like Sprinting, gymnastics or swimming.
The widely accepted ‘stereotype’ is that football is a man’s game and women have no place in it. And despite the fact that Nigeria now has an active football league for women, the impression lingers. Rather than get upset or give up every time someone calls you out for daring to have an opinion about the game, shake the negativity away and get on with investing your time as much as you feel you need to in the match. You do not need anyone’s approval really.
Courtney-Dike-1
  • It is okay for you to talk about football
Most football viewing centers around the country are crowded by men and the few women who make their way to these venues are seen as arm-candies who are probably only there to cheer their boyfriend’s teams. So, when they dare to comment on a particular player or move, you find  a number of the men making jokes.
It is important for every Nigerian woman who loves football to realize that there is no law or rule that says a woman cannot talk about football. It is just a game, and like men, they also can develop the interest and love for the sport and so have every right to talk about it if they chose.
131219-futbol_practice-269-640x426
  • YOU ARE EVERY FOOTBALL-LOVING GUY’S FANTASY

The idea that women do not really love football is continually fostered by girls who actually pretend to have interest in the game just to attract a guy or just watch the games to support their husbands or male partners. These girls cannot be blamed really because guys who are football lovers (and we are talking about almost every guy inNigeria) tend to get a thrill from girls who have similar interest with them. They basically fantasize about being with a girl who genuinely understands the game as it makes them feel the lady understands or “gets” them at a primal level.
So, if you are a woman who has a genuine love for football, you just are in luck, as you are a hot cake for this breed of football-loving men.  You however should try not to overdo it, as these guys also can be intimidated by girls who know more than them about a team or the sport in general.

  • You can make a living doing what you love
There are some girls whose love for the games stems from great skill and talent for the sport. The girls will definitely school any guy on the field. They also need to realize that they can make a living from this talent.
There are professional football players all over the world and women have their own football world cup and premier league. Aside from the option of going pro and joining a football club, they could also work as coaches or personal trainers. Either way, they make a living from doing what they love.

Matches this Summer could be Played without Spectators - UEFA

UEFA bosses are considering closing stadiums from fans this summer in France as the world is still coming to terms from the shock of the Paris Terror attack in the Stade de France last year and most recently the Brussels airport attack that gulped 34 lives.

The EURO 2016 Tournament which is the biggest football tournament for European nations, will be held across 10 stadiums in 10 cities in France with the capacity of the smallest stadium being 33,000 while the largest being 81,000 (Stade de France) making it an easy target for terrorists attack.

With the tournament barely 3 months away, UEFA executive committee vice-president Giancarlo Abete has admitted the best option could be to play the matches behind closed doors.
'Euro 2016 is the kind of event we can't delay or postpone.' Abete told French radio station Radio 24. We can't exclude the possibility of playing behind closed doors as we cannot exclude terrorism.'
In a statement, UEFA said:
'We will continue their joint work and will regularly monitor the level of risk for the tournament and their respective organisational plans. 'For over three years now, EURO 2016 SAS has been working closely with the relevant authorities to develop the most appropriate mechanisms in order to guarantee a safe and secure tournament and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure that is the case for all involved.' France's interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve was keen to stress adequate security measures have been put in place.
'The events in Brussels remind us of the very high level of security which is necessary to ensure Euro 2016 is successful,' said Cazeneuve, who at a press conference said the government would contribute £1.5million for CCTV projects to cover fan zones during the tournament.
'Euro 2016 must combine sportsmanship, festivity and security for the teams, coaches and fan. It is 80 days to the start of Euro 2016 and the organisers, cities and state services are fully mobilised. 'Euro 2016 should be a celebration but collective security is an obligation for everyone alongside the government.'

Welbeck opened scoring in the 7th minute with Alex Iwobi doubling the lead in the 42nd minute to put Arsenal two goals up at half time.

Arsenal kept the ball for ages until Sanchez quickened things up with a short ball into Ozil. Then he took the return and slid a gentle through pass to Welbeck, who moved smoothly around the keeper to score.

The second was a simple counter-attacking goal. Bellerin curled an excellent long pass that allowed Iwobi to charge through on goal from the halfway line. He ran into the box and slid the ball through Joel’s legs and into the net.

It was Alex Iwobi’s first Premier League start.
Giroud also had a goal disallowed by Referee Mark Clattenburg in the 83rd minute. He headed Sanchez’s corner into the net from six yards, but the whistle had gone for a foul by Iwobi on Jagielka.

Wenger: We Knew Winning Was Important

Arsene Wenger supports Eva Carneiro: Gaffer believes physio was not at fault
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says his men were aware of how important it was to win against Everton.

The gunners recorded a 2-0 win over Everton and are eight points behind Leicester City, with the win crucial in their title chase.

“We knew that if we didn’t win we were out of it,” he admitted. “In England it is very difficult to give a balance of the performance. When you lose, it is disastrous but we were not so bad.

“We had our backs to the wall and responded well. I am pleased that mentally we responded under pressure.

“I am not masochistic enough to consider us out of it. Mathematically we have a chance and a game in hand at home. We are not the flavour of the week but if we don’t believe no-one will do it for us.

“We have to be humble and fight in every game like today. Then we never know. We need some performances and some [other sides to drop points].”
