Editor’s note: Once the political capital of Nigeria, Lagos
state is unarguably the social, political, business and
fashion capital of Nigeria. It is where everything happens.
Affectionately called ‘Eko’ especially by the Yoruba speaking
citizens, it is the smallest state and yet the most populated
in Nigeria. What are the things that make people want to
visit and stay in Lagos in spite of the hustle and bustle that
typifies this city that never sleeps?
#1-The Social Life
Can you talk about Lagos without talking about the social
life? The city is packed full of buzz and noise. If you live on
the mainland, especially places like Agege, Iyana Ipaja,
Oshodi or Egbeda where there is lots of tenement housing,
the social life begins from there. You might have a
neighbour who is staying in a single room and yet owns a
loud speaker that blares fuji music all the time. Everyone is
a member of one big jolly family.
#2-Job Opportunities
Lagos has the headquarters of most large businesses and
companies in Nigeria. It provides a fertile ground for you to
be employed or start a business. Whether it is on the island
or on the mainland, you can bet that someone is ready to
patronize you. The competition might be high but if you are
creative and ingenious, then no one can stop you.
#3-Tourism
Lagos is so beautiful and there are so many breathtaking
sites that will make you jump up for joy. There are so many
places to visit regardless of your taste. Have you had a ride
on the third mainland bridge? Visited the National Arts
Theater? Had a horse ride on the beach? Felt nature at the
Lekki Conservation Centre? Ran on the beach with the wind
slapping your face? Soared like an eagle at Freedom Park?
Woven in and out of human traffic at Obalende? Walked into
history at the Nigerian National Museum?……the list is
endless and exhilarating. Trust me; the sights will melt your
soul.
#4-Street Carnivals.
Now don’t get it confused: there is the annual Lagos Street
Carnival that is officially organized by the Lagos state
government and there are also other carnivals that are
organized in different neighbourhoods. Whichever one it is
that you attend; you will be treated to a colourful display of
music, dance, costumes and many more.
#5-Nollywood/cinema
Light, Camera and action! Lagos is the undisputed home of
the big screen. If you love movies, then get ready for
entertainment at its peak. If you love the company of others
and popcorn when seeing a movie, then Silverbird Cinemas
on the island, Ozone cinema at Yaba, the City Mall at Ikeja
are just some of the places where you can enjoy great
movies. The national theatre and Terra Kulture are two
places where you can be treated to that.
#6-Transportation
Lagos offers different ways through which people can
commute. Depending on where you live and work, the
options are many. The yellow painted bus popularly called
Danfo is almost everywhere while the BRT is available with
its own advantage of designated routes. That’s not all; there
are taxi services to move you quickly around the city and the
Lagos ferry is also available to take you across the waters.
#7-Nightlife
A city that never sleeps, Lagos has a lot of reasons why you
should be awake. There are lots of nightclubs and
restaurants to keep you awake all night. The music is sure to
keep you on your toes and rock all night. Lasgidi is never a
dull place.
#8-Party
This is where the lifestyle exists. In Lagos, there is always a
party every weekend. Whether it’s a wedding or a burial,
there is always a reason for people to put on their aso ebi
and go and enjoy free meals..
