Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) house of
representatives have called for the resignation of the newly elected
deputy speaker of the lower house, Suleiman Yusuf Lasun.
The move by the PDP members is as a result of an agreement they had with their APC counterparts loyal to new speaker, Yakubu Dogara where they agreed that PDP’s Leo Ogor will emerge as the deputy speaker.
Ogor was the majority leader of the 7th Assembly, Leo Ogor, and he was originally tipped to emerge as the deputy speaker in an accord between the Dogara’s group known as Consolidation Group and the caucus of the PDP in the house.
The leadership of the APC for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker were Femi Gbajabiamila and Tahir Mohammed Monguno, respectively, But the Dogara group struck a deal with their PDP counterparts.
According to Peoples Daily, the election of Ogor was difficult because of the keenly contested election for the position of Speaker in which Dogara won Gbajabiamila with just eight votes- 182 to 174.
The
Dogara group then back-tracked on their agreement with the PDP members
by sticking to Lasun so as to generate the sympathy of south west
members in the House to their advantage. Their permutation worked
as Lasun polled 203 votes as against Monguno’s 153.
The Dogara’s group reportedly decided against presenting Ogor for the election after series of consultations with various stakeholders within the group on the floor of the house on the day of the election.
A reliable source from the PDP secretariat said the Dogara group reneged on the agreement because of fears that members from the North would have revolted by voting against Ogor.
“There was an agreement but the group did not sustain it all through because it thought some members from the North would have voted in sympathy for Monguno and so they decided to woo members from the South West in the hope that having failed to clinch the Speakership they would rally round Suleiman Yusuf,” he said.
Non-withstanding, the PDP is insisting on the agreement, pressuring the Dogara group to compel Lasun to step aside and pave the way for Ogor to step in as Deputy Speaker.
The PDP has reached out to other zones for support saying the south south geo-political zone needs to be accommodated in the leadership structure of the House.
Meanwhile, Nigerians have been reacting to the news that the National Assembly members will receive a total of N8.64billion as wardrobe allowance.
