Fashion’s finest gathered at Cipriani Wall Street on Thursday night for Fashion Group International’s Night of Stars.
Hosted by the comical Simon Doonan , the dinner and awards ceremony honored a slew of fashion and entertainment industry figures, including Lanvin designer
Alber Elbaz , who took home the Superstar award.
Meryl Streep presented her friend Elbaz with his award, and the designer delivered a speech — that was both heartfelt and hilarious — in which he talked about everything from his love of movies and large containers of popcorn (‘Films make me dream and laugh’) to the madness of fashion month and bloggers’ need to document everything during the shows.
“During fashion week in Paris, I spoke with a few editors I know, and I asked them, ‘Hey, how are you?’ and they said, ‘Exhausted.’ They said to me that they used to see 50 shows a week. Now they have to see 50 shows a day but [there’s] only 24 hours. I spoke with a few writers in Paris, and they said the same thing. They used to write their reviews in the taxi having an apple, that’s how they gave us their verdict. Now they do it during the show with no apple,” Elbaz said.
“The fashionistas are very, very busying during the show filming everything. When I come out after the show, I feel that there’s no clapping, and I asked what’s going on. They said, ‘They’re filming, they don’t have two hands,'” Elbaz added.
“We live in a time of being photogenic. I was asked the other day if I have a personal Instagram, and I said ‘Not really… I don’t really have photogenic friends. I only have good friends.’ I also don’t take pictures of the food. I eat food,” he said.
Later, he added “We are living today in a smart world. A world of very smart design. Smart thinking. Smart product. Today, a 12-year-old girl in the middle of nowhere living with technology can see all the shows in Paris live. The show, the front row, the backstage, the celebrities. Wow, technology makes her dream come true.”
