The National Assembly has given the assurance that the bill for the establishment of Nigeria Peace Corps will be passed after scaling through public hearing and the third reading at the two chambers.
A member of the Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Danjuma Lar and his colleague at the lower chamber, Abdullahi Faruq on Saturday, gave the assurance at the Passing out Parade and commissioning of about 1,300 cadets of Peace Corps of Nigeria.The Peace Corps of Nigeria is yet to get legally recognised as a paramilitary agency of government, 17 years after its establishment.
Honourable Farouq and Senator Lar advised the officers to guide their conducts at their various posts, stressing that public perception of their activities would go a long way in the passage of the bill.
Some of the cadets, who had become officers, said that they joined the Peace Corps to contribute their quota as youths to ensure peace in the society when they are posted to their respective places of service.
The new officers expressed hope that the bill, when passed into law, would finally ensure job security for the volunteer officers with better funding from government to enable it fulfill the mission for which it was established.
The commissioning of the cadets marked the end of a 4-week training to enable them get integrated into the officer level of the Peace Corps of Nigeria.
The National Commandant of the Corps, Dr. Dickson Akoh, in his address, said that over 98,000 youths had been engaged in promoting peace and reducing social vices and violence among the youths and the communities.
Dr. Akoh also cleared the air on why the cadets were made to pay for their kits.
