The Senate will in a few days, deliberate on a report for a bill to establish a National Unity and Peace Corps that would tackle clashes between farmers and herdsmen.
A bill for an act to establish National Unity and Peace Corps to uphold and Impact the Attributes of National Ethics for Restitution”, went through a public hearing yesterday.
The Acting Chairman of the Committee on Interior, Sen. Bayero Usman Nafada(Gombe- APC), presided over the public hearing.
The said Bill intends to empower the establishment to mediate in the raging and incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen across the country.
The Bill when passed into law, will also strengthen the Unity Corps to mediate in communal skirmishes and battle against several social ills and other root causes of cultism and anti-social behaviour in the country, Sen. Nafada said yesterday.
The troubling and burning issue of rampaging herdsmen, has become a major security issue in the country, leading to a proposal by the Federal Government to create grazing reserves in states to end the problem.
Only on Tuesday, the Senate was rocked by a discussion on the matter, which was brought up by Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe a PDP lawmaker from Abia State.
Abaribe had told the Senate that the necessity or otherwise of the routes, was causing agitation in his senatorial district, as he called on the Senate to address the matter.
However, the debate on how to tackle the vexed issue, continues to rage, posing a greater risk to Agriculture and other sectors of the economy.
The Senate is expected to resume next week and consider the report of a Public Hearing on the Bill to establish the agency.
Embedded in the Bill is also a proposal for the creation of a National Peace Corps for the country, to promote peace and security in the secondary schools, among other things.
