The fire, which began at about 10:30pm, started after the market closed for the day’s commercial activities.
Kurmi market is the oldest market in Kano, dating back about 1,000 years, and was hub for trans-Saharan trade.
Fire service personnel have responded to the incident, according to sources at the scene.
State radio stations announced the fire to citizens and requested that Samaritans assist fire services extinguish the blaze.
