Coal miners embark on strike

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), which organised the strike, said last week that it would begin from 1800 local time (1600 GMT). About 30,000 workers could take part.

South African coal miners began a strike on Sunday after wage talks collapsed last week, disrupting the sector that produces the country's electricity and exports coal to Europe and Asia.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), which organised the strike, said last week that it would begin from 1800 local time (1600 GMT). About 30,000 workers could take part.

"The strike has just started. As expected our workers have downed tools," NUM spokesman Livhuwani Mammburu told Reuters.

Two smaller unions which mostly represent skilled workers and supervisors accepted the coal companies' offers last week.NUM's arch rival,
the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), has not accepted the offer but its membership levels are small.
The Chamber of Mines, which represents Glencore, Anglo American Coal and Exxaro, said last week that the coal producers had raised their offer to increase wages by up to 8.5 percent for the lowest-paid workers, from 8 percent previously. South Africa's inflation rate is 4.6 percent.

Liverpool Sack Manager, Brendan Rodgers

The Liverpool  Football Club manager, Brendan Rodgers has been sacked. This is coming on the heels of his team’s 1-1 draw against Everton in the Merseyside derby which left them in tenth position and six places away from the top spot.

The former Swansea coach who guided the team to second place two seasons ago, could not re-enact the form that saw Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge mesmerise the Premier League with stunning goals.

A statement released by the club on sunday stated: “We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Brendan Rodgers for the significant contribution he has made to the club and express our gratitude for his hard work and commitment.

“All of us have experienced some wonderful moments with Brendan as manager and we are confident he will enjoy a long career in the game.
“Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch. Ambition and winning are at the heart of what we want to bring to Liverpool and we believe this change gives us the best opportunity to deliver it.

“The search for a new manager is underway and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner.”

Meanwhile, rumours are rife that Jurgen Klopp, the former Borussia Dortmund manager, has signed a three- year deal with the Reds to replace the departed Rodgers.

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has expressed his sadness with the sudden sack of the former Liverpool boss, stating that he is always sad when any manager is sacked.
“He will get a new club soon,” Wenger added. This news is also coming following reports that 68- year-old Dick Advocaat, has resigned from his position as Sunderland’s manager following his team’s failure to win a match in the EPL this season.

Olokun festival will boost tourism development, cultural integration

Nigeria is a blessed nation, but we can only make lasting Impact on the world if we appreciate our culture and make our tourist sites attractive to the world.

The Coordinator of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Otunba Gani Adams, has said that the celebration of Olokun Festival will promote tourism and cultural integration in the country.
Adams said this on Sunday in Lagos at a news conference organised to announce programmes earmarked for the 13th edition of the festival.
Adams, who is also the initiator of Olokun Festival, said that the ceremony was mainly to showcase the cultural values and tradition of the Yoruba.

The coordinator said the celebration had provided an opportunity for prominent people and dignitaries to come to Nigeria from every part of the world.

"Tourists and adventurers annually come from across the globe to Nigeria to witness and see for themselves the beauty inherent in the Yoruba culture.

"The reason for celebrating Olokun festival annually is borne out of our desire to project the Yoruba culture to the world.

"As a foremost institution poised to promote the Yoruba culture, Olokun Festival Foundation under my leadership, is determined to set the pace for cultural integration and tourism development in Nigeria.

“Nigeria is a blessed nation, but we can only make lasting impact on the world if we appreciate our culture and make our tourist sites attractive to the world,"

Adams said.

God's dream for creation; The union of a man and woman, Pope says

Pope Francis formally opened the synod of bishops Sunday, telling participants that the union between a man and woman is the foundation of God’s plan for the family, and a solution to the many forms of loneliness in today’s world.

“This is God’s dream for his beloved creation: to see it fulfilled in the loving union between a man and a woman, rejoicing in their shared journey, fruitful in their mutual gift of self,” the Pope said in his opening Mass for the Synod of Bishops.

He explained that this plan is the same one presented in the day’s Gospel for Mark, when Jesus says “From the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’” “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh.” Pope Francis’ comments were made during his Oct. 4 Mass marking the official opening of this year’s Ordinary Synod of Bishops on the
Family. Set to last from Oct. 4-25, this year’s synod follows the theme

“The vocation and mission of the family in the Church and the modern world,” and follows last year’s extraordinary synod on the family, which focused on pastoral challenges regarding family life. In his homily, Francis noted how the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the story of creation, speaks to us of Adam’s experience of solitude before the creation of Eve.
Although Adam was given dominion over the garden and the other creatures, he “felt alone, because there was not found a helper fit for him. He was lonely.”

The Pope then pointed to several forms of loneliness in modern society, and said that despite living in a globalized world filled with
mansions and skyscrapers, the warmth within families today is diminishing.
While people have great ambitions and many different forms of entertainment, they have little time or freedom to enjoy them, he noted.

“There is a deep and growing interior emptiness,” he said, adding that “the number of people who feel lonely keeps growing, as does the number of those who are caught up in selfishness gloominess, destructive violence and slavery to pleasure and money.”

Like Adam, the world today experiences power but also vulnerability and loneliness, Francis observed, explaining that this fits the image of the modern family.

“People are less and less serious about building a solid and fruitful relationship of love. Love which is lasting, faithful, conscientious, stable and fruitful is increasingly looked down upon, viewed as a quaint relic of the past,” he said.

“It would seem that the most advanced societies are the very ones which have the lowest birth-rates and the highest percentages of abortion, divorce, suicide, and social and environmental pollution.” Pope Francis then noted how God was pained by Adam’s loneliness when he said that “it is not good that the man should be alone,” and created a suitable partner for him. God’s words, the Pope said, “show that God did not create us to live in sorrow or to be alone. He made men and women for happiness, to share their journey with someone who complements them…to love and to be loved, and to see their love bear fruit in children.”

Francis referred to how in the Gospel, Jesus was questioned about divorce by the crowd, who practiced and established it as an “inviolable fact,” and wanted to trap him. Jesus responds in “a straightforward and unexpected way” by bringing everything back to the beginning of creation, he said. By doing this, Jesus teaches us “that God blesses human love, that it is he who joins the hearts of two people who love one another, he who joins them in unity and indissolubility.”

Turning to the role of the family, the Pope said that Jesus’ command to “let not man put asunder” what God himself has joined is an exhortation to believers “to overcome every form of individualism and legalism which conceals a narrow self- centeredness and a fear of accepting the true meaning of the couple and of human sexuality in God’s plan.”

Pope Francis explained that for God, “marriage is not some adolescent utopia, but a dream without which his creatures will be doomed to
solitude! Indeed, being afraid to accept this plan paralyzes the human heart.”

Paradoxically, there are many people who ridicule this plan while continuing to be attracted to true, steadfast and faithful love, he said. “We see people chase after fleeting loves while dreaming of true love; they chase after carnal pleasures but desire total self- giving.”

Quoting a text by Benedict XVI while he was still Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Francis said that in Genesis, “forbidden pleasures lost their attraction at the very moment they stopped being forbidden.”
“Even if they are pushed to the extreme and endlessly renewed, they prove dull, for they are finite realities, whereas we thirst for
the infinite, he observed.

Francis then said the Church is called to carry out her mission regarding family life in fidelity, truth and love. In fidelity to her master, the Church is called to defend faithful love and encourage families whose married life reveals of God’s own love, he said.

The Church is also called to defend “the sacredness of life, of every life; in defending the unity and indissolubility of the conjugal bond.”
He said the Church’s mission must be carried out in truth, which doesn’t change with passing fads or popular opinions. Truth, the Pope said, “protects individuals and humanity as a whole from the temptation of self-centeredness and from turning fruitful love into sterile selfishness, faithful union into temporary bonds.”

Finally, Pope Francis said that for the Church to carry out her mission in charity doesn’t mean pointing fingers or judging others, but rather implies being conscious of her duty to seek out and care for wounded couples “with the balm of acceptance and mercy.”

Quoting a speech of St. John Paul II from 1978, the Pope stressed that “error and evil must always be condemned and opposed; but the man who falls or who errs must be understood and loved.” The Church, he said, “must search out these persons, welcome and accompany them, for a Church with closed doors betrays herself
and her mission, and, instead of being a bridge, becomes a roadblock.”

Pope Francis closed his homily by asking the Lord to accompany and guide the Church and the synod fathers during the upcoming discussions, and entrusted the gathering to intercession of Mary and her “most chaste spouse,” St. Joseph.

French floods: 19 feared dead after storms sweep French Riviera

Violent storms and flooding send water cascading through Antibes, Cannes and Nice, inundating a retirement home and killing three people inside

Nineteen people are feared dead after violent storms and severe flooding swept the French Riviera, including three people who drowned in a retirement home after a river broke its banks.
Heavy flooding along the Côte d’Azur on Saturday saw the river Brague burst its banks close to the city of Antibes, flooding a home for elderly people.

The French president, François Hollande, confirmed at least 16 people had died and three were missing. The interior ministry said earlier in the morning there was little hope of finding the missing people alive.

“It’s not over,” Hollande said as he arrived at the flooded retirement home and met emergency service workers. “The toll is not yet finalised. In times like this, we must be fast, efficient and coordinated.” He warned locals to take care on
local roads, which are covered with slippery mud.
At least seven people drowned after their cars became trapped in underground car parks, according to rescue teams in Mandelieu-la Napoule, with the commune’s mayor, Henri
Leroy, warning more bodies may be found. “It’s apocalyptic,” he told Agence France-Presse. “The parking was half-emptied but there are thousands of vehicles. There could be more bodies.”

Three people drowned when their car became stuck in rising waters inside a narrow tunnel near Vallauris Golfe-Juan,authorities said.

A woman in her 60s is reported to have died in the street in Cannes when huge storms hit the region on Saturday. Water and debris coursed down roads in the festival town and in the neighbouring city of Nice. Another victim was found dead at a campsite in Antibes, according to officials.

More than 17cm (6.7in) of rain fell on the Cannes region in two hours, radio France Bleu Azur reported.

Obama declares state of emergency in South Carolina over floods Guardian journalist Stuart Dredge, attending the MIPJunior television conference in Cannes, said the venue for the event had been flooded. He said he had walked knee-deep in water on his way home on Saturday night after watching the England-Australia Rugby World Cup match.

“By half time, the street outside was running with water, and the main Rue d’Antibes road in Cannes was between ankle and knee-deep at its lower points,” he said.
“The crossroads were the most dangerous parts: the water really was pouring down from the higher ground with strong currents – and a fair few people walking home had been drinking, so their balance would have been a bit impaired
already.”

Dredge said he did not see anyone fall into the water, although some moped drivers needed assistance. “This morning, there are a few cars that have clearly been swept along and deposited leaning against railings. When I got home the power was out in my building, but it came back on again shortly before midnight.

“I think Cannes probably got off lightly comparably. It was a hairy walk home, but I didn’t feel in true danger,” he added.

“Some cars were carried off into the sea,” said Cannes’ mayor, David Lisnard, describing water levels reaching halfway up car doors and trees left uprooted on the city’s main street.

“We have rescued a lot of people, and we must now be vigilant against looting,” he added, announcing that an emergency plan to mobilise police, emergency responders and municipal services. British journalist Sarah Kovandzich said she was in Le Crillon bar a few streets back from the seafront when she and her companions saw water running past the door.

“I’ve never seen anything like it in Cannes,” she said. “The water started to seep into the bar, then we were up to our ankles, people were putting their feet up on the chairs. Outside, you could see plant pots and flowers just being carried along the road by the water.” Kovandzich said the walk home was daunting because the flooding had removed manhole covers. “You couldn’t immediately see where the holes might be because of the flowing water.”

The power was out in her apartment and water was dripping through the ceiling, she said.
One social media user compared the scenes in Cannes on Sunday morning to the zombie TV series The Walking Dead ,

posting pictures of several damaged cars.
France’s interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, was also due to visit the area on Sunday morning to inspect rescue efforts, his spokesman said.

Hollande thanked rescuers and politicians for their work, praising the “solidarity of the nation” and offering condolences to the victims’ families, while the prime minister, Manuel Valls, spoke of his “deep emotion” on hearing of the deaths.

The Elysée palace announced on Sunday that victims of the flooding will receive help from the state under a French law that gives compensation to victims of natural disasters. A tweet from the president’s office said it would be paid within three months.
The areas worst hit by flooding were also the hardest to access, officials said, raising fears the death toll could rise. About 27,000 homes remained without power early on Sunday, 14,000 of them in Cannes.

French rail company SNCF said about a dozen trains carrying hundreds of people had to be halted for safety reasons, while roads around Antibes were also flooded, according to French emergency services. Train services are still cancelled between Toulon and Nice, a spokesman said on Sunday , adding that further delays are likely. “Campsites are under water, and two helicopters are circling to ensure the public’s security, as some people are stuck on the roof of their caravans,” said a spokeswoman for the fire brigade.

Up to 500 tourists, including several Britons and Danes, sought shelter overnight at Nice airport, while a Nice versus Nantes football match was interrupted by the downpours. French weather forecasters said the worst storms had now
passed over the French mainland and were heading for the Italian coast.

More than 120 people are staying in temporary shelters in Cannes, according to city authorities. Donations for those who have lost belongings in the floods are being organised in an emergency drive by French charity Secours Populaire.

Louis van Gaal shocked as Manchester United beaten by inspired Arsenal

Louis van Gaal questioned the will to win of his Manchester United players after he watched in shock as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal. United conceded all of the goals in the first 19 minutes and Van Gaal complained about their failure to execute his gameplan, together with their lack of aggression. He said that he had made his feelings known to them at half-time and full-time.

I didn’t expect that,” Van Gaal said. “I was surprised – not performing to our gameplan, not the will to win. I have not seen that, when you are top of the league [as United were at the beginning of the weekend]. So I was surprised, amazed – maybe that is a better word.

Alexis Sánchez’s explosive start fires Arsenal above Manchester United “When you give a team like Arsenal so much space to play football, then you know you will lose. We prepared ourselves to play more compact and not losing our aggression, so it was amazing for me. I am very disappointed.”

Van Gaal said that he had no explanation for what had happened at the outset, when Arsenal tore through his team, with Alexis Sánchez scoring either side of Mesut Özil’s goal. “I don’t know why it happened,” Van Gaal said. “I put the
question at half-time and after the match. It is difficult for the players to answer at the moment, because they are all in an emotional moment. We have lost, and lost in a way that you cannot lose when you are top of the league.

“The problems did not start at the back, they started in midfield. Their midfield players, especially Cazorla and Özil, had too much time and space. We also had space behind our defence. When you always put the pressure on, they cannot make their passes so easily. That was our problem in the first half.

“They were not aggressive. And you have to do it not only with the two in midfield but as a team. You have to be more compact. You need aggression at the moment you have a duel and Arsenal were much more aggressive.” Van Gaal said that his frustration was compounded by the
fact that most of his players would now depart for international duty, with some of them flying straight out of London, and there would be no time for him to work on restoring the collective confidence before the trip to Everton on Saturday week. Arsène Wenger, too, had reason to bemoan the international fixtures. Sánchez limped off towards the end with a groin problem but he will join up with Chile before their World Cup qualifiers at home to Brazil on Thursday night and away to Peru the following
Tuesday night. “He has a little groin problem and, unfortunately, he goes to Chile,” the Arsenal manager said. “You cannot stop him from
going to Chile. He loves so much to play for his country and they play against Brazil and in Peru. He will not want to miss the Brazil game. I hope he will come back in good shape.”

Wenger was delighted with Arsenal’s performance, which represented a ”strong and united” response to Tuesday’s 3-2 home loss to Olympiakos in the Champions League. He felt that all of his players had played well, particularly Theo Walcott, who set up the second and third goals. Wenger described it as ”certainly one of Walcott’s best games as a No9.”

Wenger said: “We were convincing and it gives a strong answer to all the questions that were raised during the week.  What you want is a strong response when you have a big
disappointment. We have to put it all in perspective and focus on what is important – it’s us and not too much on what was said.
”The pressure on any disappointment is massive today, it makes it a bit more difficult to deal with and we did it well. To win in a big game is always a statement and we are in it [the title race]. I hope that the result will give us belief and ambition for fight for it.”

Ahmed Musa on fire in Russia

Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa has expressed his delight at scoring a goal in CSKA Moscow’s 2-0 win at Dinamo Moscow on Sunday to become the Russian Premier League top scorer alongside Zenit St.Petersburg’s Brazil international Hulk. Both players have scored six goals each in the season. It was Musa’s ninth goal in all competitions. South Africa 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner Musa, who scored the second goal in the 77th minute for CSKA Moscow against Dinamo, said the victory would boost the team’s confidence as they aim to reclaim the Premier League title.

“I am happy with the victory at Dinamo and getting a goal in the game is good for me as well,” AfricanFootball.com quoted the former Kano Pillars star as saying after the encounter. “It was not an easy game being a derby, but we worked hard to get the victory we wanted.

“We have now won two derbies away this season (the first was at Spartak Moscow) and that’s good for our confidence as we target
to win the league.

“I am not getting carried away with my goals, I will keep working hard to score more.” CSKA remain top of the Premier League standings with 29 points from 11 games, eight points clear of nearest challengers Zenit St
Petersburg. Meanwhile, out-of-favour Nigeria striker Bartholomew Ogbeche scored his fifth goal in three matches for Cambuur as the
Leeuwarden side drew 1-1 with Roda JC in the Dutch on Saturday.

According to supersport.com , Marvin Peerman headed a corner into the path of Ogbeche, who fired home from close range to give the visitors a deserved lead.

“I am disappointed, because I expected to win. But what a great goal for Roda. A beauty. You have to respect that,” he was quoted as saying on the club’s official website, www.cambuur.nl.
Ogbeche has scored six goals in all competitions for Cambuur this
season.

Wike Makes First Public Appearance After Initial Blackout

After his initial disappearance during Nigeria’s
Independence day celebration on Thursday , October 1, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has made a dramatic appearance in public.
The governor was reportedly sighted in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Saturday, where he was inspecting ongoing road projects in the state. Governor Nyesom Wike of RIvers state was sighted carrying out some inspections in Port Harcourt, the state capital

Wike, whose administration has been drawing criticisms from the opposition for not celebrating the 55th national Independence anniversary in the state, but made elaborate celebration of his 100 days in office, voiced his pleasure during an unscheduled visit to the Rumuomoi/ Orosi/ Psychiatric road in Obio- Akpor Local Government Area of the State.

The governor who addressed newsmen at the site, said:

“The happiness on the faces of the people shows that they appreciate what the State Government Is doing for them. But the quality of the job is what is important to my administration.” The governor said the road is important and strategic as it will decongest traffic on Ikwerre road.

“For some time now, this road was impassable; but today you can see that businesses are thriving and the value of properties will improve,” he noted.

Wike’s dramatic arrival at the site with hooting of siren attracted a remarkable crowd at the venue despite his Impromptu visit to the site, he also stated that huge amount spent on the project, is commensurate with the quality of the road. Governor Wike promised to tackle head on the myriad of problems confronting the state which are inevitable because governance is about solving problems.

'We only spent N332m for independence in 5-yrs' Ex- President says;

The statement, however, claimed that the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration spent a total of N70 million on the 55th independence anniversary.

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has denied claims that his administration of five years spent a total of N64billion on October 1 celebrations.

In a statement issued by the immediate ex-minister/ deputy chairman, National Planning Commission, Abubakar Sulaiman , the ex-president only spent a a total of N332.6m in five years with an average of N66m.

The statement, however, claimed that the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration spent a total of N70 million on the 55th independence anniversary.

In the words of Sulaiman, " We were taken aback by the recent comment reportedly credited to His Excellency, Governor Nasir El-rufai where he claimed that the immediate past President, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s administration spent N64billion to cover the country independence anniversary spending in five years."

'The break down, according to the governor showed that N13billion was spent in 2011, N15billion in 2012 and N14billion in 2013 and N22billion allegedly spent in 2014. This tissue of lies was contained on his facebook comment on Thursday. 'Ordinarily, we would have allowed this to go as just ranting of a favour seeker , but for the sake of ordinary Nigerians who were abreast of happenings under the administration and also those who never did, we will like to set the record straight.

'It is important to correct the misinformation so that the unsuspecting public would not be misled. For the record, a breakdown of our anniversary spending between 2012 to 2014 amounted to N332.6million. We challenge the Office of the Government of the Federation (OSGF) to publish these details for the consumption of the public.

'For the record, a breakdown of our spending for this event between 2012 and 2104 goes thus;
2012-107.6million; 2013-45million and 2014 had 180million. So, the question here is where did the billions as claimed by el-rufai emanate from? Even though that of 2010 and 2011 are not handy now, but it should be known that they all fall within the same bracket as the one stated, except that the 2010 anniversary was a golden one when the country marked her 50 year of independence.

'But even then , not such outrageous sum was either budgeted or expended . Again, it is germane to explain the increase in the 2013 anniversary spending for the purpose of accountability. The National Honours Award Investiture was incorporated into the celebration, thus making it two events in one, hence the N174,800,000.00 budget. We also want to add that the said award investiture could not hold in 2013 and the approved budget rolled over and was utilized to organise the investiture in 2014.

'It is high time government functionaries desisted from abusing their immunity by destroying history and trading on lies just to gain cheap popularity or curry one favour or the other from certain quarters. Perhaps President Olusegun Obasanjo was right in his assessment of el-rufai when he said in his latest memoir, My Watch that his vivid recollection of him (el rufai) is his penchant for lying, for unfair embellishment of stories and his inability to sustain loyalty for long.

'That exactly is what el-rufai has done with his ungodly fabrication of lies against Jonathan government. One hopes that President Buhari would be on guard against being misled by the likes of el-rufai who are hell bent on misinforming the Nigerian publics,' the statement read in full.
