Chewing stick wears out teeth surface – Dental Surgeon

A Dental Surgeon with Bethel Dental Clinic, Abuja, Dr Isikwei Uche, has said that the constant use of chewing stick to clean the mouth can wear out the surface of the teeth and the gum.

Uche told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that the use of chewing sticks was a practice some people had imbibed as a result of their socio-cultural background.

He said the use of chewing sticks implied that pressure had to be exerted to ensure proper cleaning of the teeth which was detrimental to the gum and teeth.

“People who use chewing sticks apply lots of pressure on the teeth so as to clean well but this practice over a period of time wears away the surface of the teeth and the gum.

“When you apply pressure, you bruise the gum, wear the gum and it causes gum recession.

“Chewing stick cannot be used to clean the inner part of the teeth because it is just straight and does not have the ability to reach the inner parts of the mouth,” Uche said.

He further explained that chewing sticks control mouth odour due to some anti plague effect it had but lacked the mint readily available in most toothpastes. Uche noted that the mint in toothpastes assist to produce fresh breath for the mouth. The Dental Surgeon added that chewing sticks were not something patients would be advised to use anymore, adding that there were good toothpaste and toothbrushes available.

He, however, observed that the use of chewing sticks had no clear cut health implications on the users, adding that it had some components that helps protect the mouth and teeth from decay.

“The use of chewing sticks does not have any health issues but the issue is that it is poor in management of the oral environment.

“For some people that use it, it is easy to carry about, it is readily available, it is less expensive to purchase. “When using chewing sticks, it helps the user to exercise the jaw and can as well induce the production of saliva in the
mouth. “Some chewing sticks that are bitter have components like chloride, sodium which also functions in toothpastes as plague indicators and can prevent holes in the teeth,” Uche said.

He also pointed out that some people who would rather dump the use of chewing sticks entirely preferred to combine it with toothbrush and pastes.

Buhari Speaks About Policies To Be Used In 2015 Budget

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, October 5, shed light on the details of the 2016 budget preparation by his administration.

Speaking in Abuja in the course of the meeting with president of the Movement of the Enterprises of France, Pierre Gattaz, and French investors, Buhari claimed that fresh policies would be used in the new budget, Premium Times reports. Those policies would be aimed at rapid diversification of the Nigerian economy which is currently overdependent on the oil and gas sector.

Buhari plans to boost domestic manufacturing and attract more investment in Nigeria’s agriculture and mining. The country leader.therefore urged investors to return to Nigeria next year to benefit from the new policies.

Regarding the security challenges, considered by many as an obstacle for investors, Buhari assured them his government was taking all the necessary measures to resolve these problems.

“Our government came into office at a time when many people had abandoned the country’s manufacturing, agricultural and mining sectors.

“We are doing our utmost best to encourage
diversification into these sectors which can employ a lot of people and we will welcome your support in this regard.

“Ultimately, reducing unemployment will also help to improve security because unemployment and insecurity are inseparable.”

President Buhari further assured the French investors that his administration had launched an active anti- corruption fight to ensure effective management of the country resources.

Recall that last week reports emerged that the federal government had started working on the 2016 budget draft optimisation .

According to the information available at that time, the.budget will be based on six policy thrusts: economic and social development, infrastructure, governance, environment, as well as state and regional development.

Ex-Oil Minister Diezani Nabbed In London With N3.9 Trillion

New reports have emerged following the fraud charges against Nigeria’s former oil minister, Diezani Alison- Madueke. Officials say she was nabbed with £13 billion (N3.9 trillion) in a huge real estate transaction.

According to THE Sun UK, Diezani was apparently nabbed while she was looking at buying a massively expensive apartment at one Hyde park, with 13 billion pounds, an equivalent of over 3 trillion Naira.

Meanwhile, Diezani appeared before London’s
Westminster Magistrate Court on Monday, October 5, at about 10 am over charges of corruption and money laundering.
Sam Piranty, a reporter with the BBC, confirmed her appearance via his twitter handle. Initially there were doubts that the former petroleum minister will show up in court, however, the tweet by the reporter on ground cleared all doubts. It is recalled that on Friday, October 2, Diezani was arrested alongside four other Nigerians by the International Corruption Unit (ICU) of the UK’s National Crimes Agency. She was later granted bail after been detained for several hours. Meanwhile, fresh investigations by Sahara Reporters have revealed the way in which Diezani squandered funds belonging to the Nigerian people.

The reports details fraudulent transactions allegedly carried out by the embattled minister, it also goes on to name all her associates who aided in her supposed stealing from the nation’s coffers.

The saga of Alison-Madueke started long ago. A video from the archieves (2013) shows how an activist of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders reads some of her ‘crimes’ and then submits a petition to the Nigeria’s Economic Financial Crimes Commission:

Marriage is forever, pope asserts

Pope Francis opened a meeting of the world's
bishops on family issues Sunday by forcefully asserting that marriage is an indissoluble bond between man and woman. But he said the church doesn't judge and must "seek out and care for hurting couples with the balm of acceptance and mercy."

Francis dove head-on into the most pressing issue confronting the meeting of 270 bishops during a solemn Mass in St. Peter's Basilica: How to better minister to Catholic families experiencing separation, divorce and other problems when the church's teaching holds that marriage is forever.

He insisted that the church cannot be "swayed by passing fads or popular opinion." But in an acknowledgment that marriages fail, he said the church is also a mother who doesn't point fingers or judge her children.
"The church must search out these persons, welcome and accompany them, for a church with closed doors betrays herself and her mission and instead of being a bridge, becomes a roadblock," he said.

One of the major debates at the synod is whether divorced and civilly remarried Catholics can receive Communion. Francis launched the synod process two years ago by sending out a 39-point questionnaire to bishops, parishes and ordinary Catholic families around the world asking about their understanding of and adherence to church teaching on family matters.

Their responses showed a widespread rift between official  Catholic teaching and practice, particularly on sex, marriage and homosexuality.

A first meeting of bishops ended last October with no consensus on how to better welcome gays and divorced and civilly remarried Catholics in the church. Conservatives insisted that Catholic doctrine is clear and unchanging. Progressives acknowledged the
doctrine but sought wiggle room in pastoral
practice. On the eve of the synod, a Vatican monsignor outed himself as gay and denounced widespread homophobia in the church.

The conference was one of many initiatives launched by conservatives in the run-up to the synod aimed at reasserting traditional Catholic teaching on homosexuality, which holds that
gays are to be respected but that homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered."

In a clear challenge to that teaching, a mid-level official in the Vatican's orthodoxy office, Monsignor Krzysztof Charamsa, announced Saturday that he was a proud gay priest with a
boyfriend, called for the synod to take up the plight of gays, and denounced homophobia throughout the church.

The Vatican summarily fired him.
Gay rights activists, who were in Rome to try to influence the synod from the sidelines, came to his defense and urged the synod fathers to assert that there is no place for homophobia in
the church.

Former Irish President Mary McAleese, a practicing Catholic with a gay son, said she hoped that more transparency would help "kill for once and all this terrible lie" that everyone was born heterosexual. More movement may emerge on the other hot-button issue, whether divorced and civilly remarried Catholics can receive Communion. Catholics who divorce and want to remarry in the church must first obtain an annulment, a ruling from a church tribunal that their first marriage was invalid. Without the annulment, these civilly remarried Catholics are considered to be living in sin and cannot
receive Communion, a condition that has led generations of Catholics to feel shunned by their church.

Francis has sought a more merciful approach, insisting that these remarried Catholics be fully part of the life of the church. Progressive prelates led by German Cardinal Walter Kasper have called for a process by which a bishop could accompany these remarried Catholics on a path of penance that, over time and on a case-by-case basis, could lead to them receiving the sacraments. On Saturday, an openly gay former student of Pope Francis' who visited with the pope during his recent trip to Washington said he was surprised Francis had met with the Kentucky county clerk who gained attention for refusing to issue same-sex couples marriage licenses.

The pope's meeting with Washington resident Yayo Grassi, his boyfriend and a few others came to light Friday as the Vatican was distancing itself from claims the pope's meeting with the clerk, Kim Davis, was an endorsement of her stance on same-sex marriage. Grassi, 67, met the man then known as Jorge Bergoglio more than 50 years ago when the future pope taught at his all-boys school in Argentina. They reconnected in 2008. Francis has met Grassi and
his boyfriend of 17 years twice since becoming pope, once in Rome and most recently in Washington, Grassi said.

He said he told friends who were quick to criticize that they should not rush to judgment and that he didn't think they had all the facts. The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, declined to say who invited Davis or what the pope knew of her case, but such encounters are arranged by the Vatican ambassador and his staff, not the pope's delegation or the U.S. bishops' conference. Grassi said after the Davis story came out and he was contacted by the media he thought: "Perhaps this is the time to defend him. I owe him that as a friend, not because he is a friend but because I
know part of the truth." Grassi said "encouraging somebody who is so divisive" like Davis would be out of character for Francis. "Here is this guy that is so much into integrating everybody,
communicating with everybody," Grassi said, adding he was "500 percent sure" the pope did not initiate the meeting with Davis. Information for this article was contributed by Nicole Winfield and Jessica Gresko of The Associated Press.

Oscar Pistorius to stay in jail

OSCAR Pistorius will stay in jail after a decision to grant him parole was again delayed Monday, his lawyer told AFP, in a long battle over whether he should be released early from a prison sentence for killing his girlfriend.

South Africa's parole review board -- the final recourse for parole disputes -- met on Monday to determine if the Paralympic star, 28, should be allowed out on house arrest. "They're going to refer the matter back to the (original) parole board," Brian Webber, a lawyer representing Pistorius, told AFP after the review board meeting.

The double-amputee sprinter was sentenced last year to five years in prison for killing model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013, the culmination of a trial that attracted global headlines.

He was found guilty of culpable homicide -- a charge equivalent to manslaughter -- after saying during the trial that he shot his girlfriend through a locked bathroom door because he mistook her for an intruder. Pistorius was due to leave prison in August until Justice Minister Michael Masutha made a last-minute intervention blocking his release. Masutha said the parole board had made a mistake when they approved Pistorius for early release, but his intervention has been widely criticised by legal experts.

Political interference?

"This process is becoming a little bit unfair because of political interference... it just makes our administrative systems in South Africa look very poor," criminal lawyer Martin Hood told AFP.

"If a person has good behaviour and has served one sixth of their sentence, then there's no reason not to grant them parole, it's a tick-the-box exercise.

"What they're doing is passing the buck."
The latest delay means Pistorius could still be in jail next month when a court hears an appeal by prosecutors that could keep him behind bars for a minimum of 15 years.
The prosecutors are pursuing a murder conviction and a longer sentence, arguing that Pistorius deliberately killed Steenkamp after an argument.

The hearing has been set for November 3.
Reeva Steenkamp's parents, who are convinced Pistorius murdered their daughter in a rage, have strongly opposed the athlete's possible release, telling an Australian television channel in August he had ruined their lives.

"He killed her. He admits he killed her. She's dead. Why didn't he just let her walk away? Why?" Reeva's mother June Steenkamp said in the interview.

A champion Paralympian and once a poster boy for sport, Pistorius, known as the "Blade Runner" for the prosthetic legs he wore on the track, shot to fame when he raced against able-bodied competitors in the 2012 London Olympics.

Chiwetel Ejiofor wants to name daughter ‘Obianuju’

Chiwetel Ejiofor recently disclosed that he would love to name a future daughter ‘Obianuju’, because it’s a beautiful name to call a child.

The ’12 Years a Slave’ actor told Red Magazine: ‘There’s an Igbo name, Obianuju, it’s a girl’s name. The translation is ‘to come into a place where there is plenty.’

‘For me, it has always been the most beautiful name to call a child. Because we have enough, we have plenty.’ Chiwetel recently ended relationship with Canadian girlfriend, Sari Mercer after dating for few years.

Real Estate News: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to Face Charges for Real Estate Fraud

The co-founder and CEO of Facebook Inc., Mark
Zuckerberg, is scheduled to face trial for an alleged real estate fraud filed by real estate developer Mircea Voskerician.

The allegations state that the social media tycoon used his influence to lure Voskerician into selling him the property near his home in 1457 Hamilton Avenue for a much lower price.

The property in question shares borders with
Zuckerberg's home with an extra 2,600 square feet. Voskerician contacted Zuckerberg to give him details about the plans of expansion and has offered the Facebook CEO the aforementioned property, to buy the extra 2,600 space in his background to serve as a buffer space to protect the billionaire's privacy.

Zuckerberg has agreed to purchase not only the
extra space but the whole of the property and has set a meeting to discuss about the deal. During that time, the property also gained another prospective buyer and has offered $4.3 million for the land.

In a meeting between Zuckerberg and Voskerician held last Dec. 4, 2012, Zuckerberg offered $1.7 million for the property and promised that he would introduce the real estate developer to his friends, clients, and associates.
Zuckerberg also offered to promote the real estate business of Voskerician by providing him with referrals and written references.

Voskerician folded for the much lower price
offered by Zuckerberg, rather than the $4.3 million, in the hopes of gaining personal referrals and business promotion activities from Facebook's CEO. Voskerician contacted Zuckerberg throughout 2013 to have the social media tycoon meet his end of the bargain but all his attempt to contact him has failed.

In May 2, 2014, Voskerician initiated and filed a
lawsuit against Zuckerberg, SFRP, Makan, Iconiq Capital, LLC (Makan's business entity), and Kerwin for the following: (1) promissory fraud; (2) intentional misrepresentation; (3) rescission; (4) breach of contract; and (5) conspiracy to commit fraud.

The full details regarding the case can be viewed

Naira Falls Against The Dollar Again

The naira has fallen against the US dollar at the parallel market again, it has been revealed.

According to Vanguard reports, the naira on Monday further depreciated against the dollar at the parallel market and lost N1.50 to the dollar as it was traded at N225.5 to the dollar at the parallel market on Monday afternoon.

1000 naira fake notes are still circulating in Borno state The report claimed that this is in sharp
contrast to the N224/dollar recorded last Friday.

The official interbank rate also reportedly dropped by 0.05 to N196.95 to the dollar, while traders at the parallel market attributed the depreciation of the naira at the market to insufficient quantity of dollar at the market.

Recall that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently explained that its efforts to save naira’s exchange rate from dive has to completely unexpected catastrophic results for Nigerian businesses.

Korede Bello: My new song “Somebody Great” Is a Prophesy To Inspire People To Greatness

Korede Bello, the rave of the moment in the music industry, has said that his new song entitled “Somebody Great’’, is a prophesy to inspire people to greatness. Bello told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday that he wrote the song to make people visualise success in their minds and then work hard to achieve it.

The new song currently enjoys massive airplay on radio just like the first single, entitled “Godwin’’. Cue in audio

“ (It’s) about the people, how we were born into this world and we don’t know how the journey will go and how one love will take us from nobody to somebody.

”How I one day hoped that my voice would unite people and stop bombing and fighting and tribulations.

“That my voice would command authority; it’s not just me, it’s about alleviating people from oppression and mental poverty.

“You can be somebody great from nobody to
somebody, you can be anything you want to be: have love for God, love for people, one love.

“But also one of the reasons why I wrote that song is for people to see themselves as great.

“Because before you can be somebody great, you need to first see it in your mind and you need to prophesy it to yourself, you need to say it to yourself.

“And I guess, those are one of the privileges of being a musician because you can put things out there in a melodic form that can change people’s lives forever.

“The song is more like a prophesy for everybody that listens to it to be able to command authority; command respect and most of all, have mental wealth.’’

Korede also told NAN that the song was about his personal struggles, and how he triumphed to become a star from nothing.

NAN reports that Korede Bello has a contractual
agreement with Don Jazzy’s Marvin Records alongside Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, D’ija and Dr Sid.
