Posted to Benue State for NYSC? This Info Might Help You

You have been posted to Benue state for your NYSC and now wondering what Benue looks like, how long it will take to travel to Benue state, how to locate the NYSC camp in Benue etc ???. Though, I did not serve in Benue but I am working presently in Benue, Otukpo precisely. Hence, I have decided to share with you, some info that might help you.

Benue is a state in the MidEast region of Nigeria with Makurdi as the capital. It is not a typical "Hausa" state as most people think. Tiv, Idoma, and Igede are spoken predominantly. Nevertheless, you will still find traces of Igbos and Yorubas in the state. David Mark (current Senate President), Tuface and TerryG (Popular Nigerian Musicians) are all from Benue State.

The state is referred to as the "Food Basket of the Nation" because it's a rich agricultural region. Hence, if you are the type that likes food alot, don't worry, you can eat the way you like without having to drain your allowee account..lol. Food is cheap and there are plenty fruits!

makurdi, benue state
Wurukum round-about, Makurdi, Benue state

If you are posted to Makurdi and its environs, be ready to cope with a hot weather during the dry season. The south-eastern part of the state adjoining the Obudu-Cameroun mountain range, however, has a cooler climate similar to that of the Jos Plateau.

Where is Benue NYSC Orientation Camp Located?

The NYSC orientation camp in Benue state is located at Wanunne, Tarka Local Government Area, Kilometer 35 Makurdi Gboko Road, Benue State. .

Makurdi to Wannune(NYSC camp) is about 40 minutes.

Lagos to Benue state by road is about 10 - 11 hours if you do not encounter any delay on the road. You can get direct bus to Makurdi or Gboko from Iddo Park, Oyingbo (around Yaba), Lagos. Transport fare as at the time of publishing this is around N5,000. It's better you book ahead a day before you travel. If not, you should try and get to the park as early as possible. First Buses leave Lagos around 7-8 am.  If you live along Badagry express road, i.e from Mile 2 down to Badagry and think you can't get to iddo Park that early, you can get Pleasure Travels just opposite Army Barracks.

If you are coming from the East, I am not sure if you can get a direct bus to Makurdi but you can ask around. I know "Peace Transport" is very popular in the East. You can go to their park to find out. They also have a park at "Obollo Affor". Hence, if they are not coming directly to Benue, you can enter a "Peace" bus coming to Obollo. From Obollo, you will get a direct bus to Otukpo (Not OtukpA). From Otukpo, you can easily get to Makurdi and from there, locating the camp is easy. Another alternative from East, is through 9th mile from where you'll easily get Otukpo or if you're lucky, a direct bus going to Makurdi.

For those who can't make it to Wanunne, you can sleep in any of the numerous hotels and guest houses in Makurdi,Otukpo etc. then proceed to Wannune the next morning. For those that can't go to a hotel, just go to the NCCF family house and pass the night. You will be welcomed there and been in the midst of others will even help you with what to expect in NYSC camp and outside. When the bus from Lagos or wherever stops you at Wurukum Park in Makurdi, just take a bike from there to NCCF Family house at Ankpa Quaters, beside the state INEC office. The fare should not be more than 100naira.

Where Is Benue State NYSC Secretariat?

The State secretariat is located at Railway Bye-pass, Makurdi and the other secretariats can be found at the different local government offices in the state.  You will be going to the nearest NYSC secretariat for your CDs.

How to Think Outside the Box

“Think outside the box” is advice you often hear. But what if you’re STUCK in a box, a routine, a view of yourself or how others view you? Options for doing things differently may seem like too much effort (“That could be hard, and it might not work”) or just plain ludicrous (“That’s just not me!”). It can be easier to decorate your box and make it more comfortable than ever by sticking with what you know and calling it self-awareness. How many times have we said “I don’t do that,” end of discussion, thereby tying up the box with a bow?

I was a master box-builder. I did what I was competent at (career, family) and what I had to do (housework). Outside the box meant outside my comfort zone, which meant the possibility of failure, and as the child of Chinese immigrants, failure = falling into an endless black abyss, SO WHO THE HECK WANTED TO GO THERE?
But IN the box, was fear, restlessness, children who wanted to run free, and once I slowly let them, there was me yearning for something more. When I started Facing Forty Upside Down (link is external), I started with baby steps, learning to dive into a pool, to do a handstand, proving that I could be different than how I was. Then I wrote Some Nerve (link is external) and faced many more fears, including the hardest ones for me: fear of failure, rejection, and pain. And most recently, I took on what I thought was an iron-clad box, a defining characteristic of mine – “I am not an athlete” – and pried it open with a year of hard training and became a triathlete ("What I Found at the Westchester Olympic Triathlon" (link is external)). By going outside our comfort zone we create new comfort zones. And if we keep pushing the boundaries we never stop growing.
Here are some ways to think outside the box:

1) Go outside the box. And that doesn’t mean you have to go far. Draw the outline of your current daily life – your routine – and do something different this week. Go to a new neighborhood, introduce yourself to coworkers you don’t know, change your exercise regimen (or start one!). Decide that extra effort is worth it – get your bike tuned up, buy swim goggles that actually fit, get up early and go see the sunrise. If you feel resistance, that’s the box. It’s made of cardboard, push through.

2) Draw the outline of your life up until now – your upbringing, your personality, the characteristics that make you, you. And then challenge them. I thought “I’m a people person, not a techie person” until I started blogging (5 years after everyone else learned the platforms). If I hadn’t, I’d still be writing in a journal that no one else would have seen. “I’m not an athlete” was absolutely true…until I became an athlete in a year. What could you become this year?

3) Hang out with people who will challenge you, not just say you’re fine the way you are. I mean, you ARE fine the way you are, BUT if you feel like you want to shake things up, you’re not going to do that staying the same. There are many ways to do this for whatever excites (or scares!) you – join a club (like Toastmasters, for public speaking) or class or team (Team #SomeNerve on FB or Team in Training for endurance sports).

4. Go away with people who don’t know you – i.e. go on a retreat. This is a double whammy because you get outside your routine and outside the parameters of what people who know you think of you. Mommies don’t have to mother while on retreat, executives don’t have to be in charge. The “serious one” can relax and laugh as much as they want, the “follower” can float ingenious ideas they’d be too intimidated to at home. In my sad and anxious times, I found retreats healing escapes, in my healthy and vibrant times they’ve been a place to network and make friends. Every time, I come back a different version of myself, more in tune with how I want to be.
The best part of going outside the box are the people you meet and the fun you have – fun you never expected to have and experiences that will always stand out in your memory because you took a chance to get there. How will you step out today?

Saraki Begs PDP Senators For Truce Over Amaechi

http://cdn.jaguda.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Bukola-Saraki-BellaNaija.jpgSenate president Bukola Saraki is trying to broker a truce with senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the acrimonious confirmation of former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as a minister.
The Tribune reports that sources from both sides confirmed that reconciliation was ongoing and that the Senate president had reached out to the PDP legislators to sustain their friendship.
One of the sources said: “The Senate president is unmindful of the friendship between him and the PDP senators and he is not taking that for granted. He has immediately reached out to the senators and assured them that party loyalty was responsible for his actions. I think they are resolving the grievances.”

He added that the lawmakers expected that Saraki would “make up for the lapses” in the distribution of the chairmanship of senate standing committees which he is set to announce next week.
According to some other sources Saraki had made spirited attempts ahead of the Thursday plenary to get the Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio and other PDP senators to his side on the Amaechi issues, but the opposition senators refused ti give in ahead of that day’s sitting.
Senators of the PDP were said to have held two closed door meetings in the Senate on Wednesday night and early on Thursday to perfect their strategy to stop the confirmation of the ex-governor.
The legislators were said to be sure that Saraki would sustain the provisions of Senate Standing orders 41(7) as well as Order 53(5) which prohibit the Senate from debating on issues on which are in court.

But the Senate leader sided with the ruling party when the chips were down, thus making the PDP senators to express their disappointment.
The arguments and counter-arguments on the floor of the upper legislative chamber resulted in  and, at a press conference after the walkout, the senators sounded as if their friendship with Saraki was over.

Check out this Unique Gele Styles (Ladies)

Unique, spectacular and breathtaking, these are words I would use to describe the beautiful work of Funmilola Olurinola a.k.a Abeke as she is fondly called. A graduate of Mass Communication from Olabisi Onabanjo Univesity, Abeke is a makeover expert. Her iconic gele styles are definitely one of a kind as she is always looking to transform even the simplest style of gele into a work of art. With how big of a fashion trend gele has become at African events today, we have to admit she is really a step ahead in the game.
Whether you are for the big flamboyant, the perfect layers or just the portable dramatic gele, Abeke’s unique gele styles have become one of our favorites.

5 Surprising Ways To Avoid Getting Sick

Staying healthy and high spirited isn’t that difficult. Here are a few surprising and simple ways to avoid getting unhealthy.

Get kissing
While you may not wish to lock lips with your loved one when he/she has a cold, do not miss any opportunity to pucker up when you both are healthy. When you and your partner swap spit, you’re exposing yourself to each other’s germs, which helps strengthen your immunity.

Listen to some tunes
The benefits of music are beyond your imagination. It reduces stress, improves memory and also boosts immunity. So if you just considered music as sound, it’s time you changed your opinion and started listening to music that really moves you.

Be obsessed with hand washing
Even if you are exposed to the flu, if you clean your hands before you touch your face, there’s little chance the germs can reach your eyes, nose, or mouth, the usual ways they enter your system and start wreaking havoc. The key is to make hand cleansing a habit. Aside from after a bathroom break, wash your hands with soap and water—or use hand sanitizer—before you eat, after being in crowded public places, like the mall, or if you’ve been near someone who’s sneezing or coughing.

Gargle
Gargle with salt water to ease the pain of a sore throat sometime or another, but yes, it works. Studies say that gargling with tap water a few times a day keeps cold miles away.

Stop nibbling your nails
When you bite your nails, you’re basically inviting flu germs to infect you. No matter how anal you are about hand washing, let’s face it—you can’t park yourself in front of a sink or use hand sanitizer 24-7. That’s where the avoid-unnecessarily-touching-your-face rule comes in.

Some Ministers Won't Get Any Portfolio - BUHARI

President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that some ministers in his government will not get a portfolio because his government cannot afford to pay forty two ministers.

The president made the comment while speaking to journalists in New Delhi, India, during
Buhari said that  Nigeria was “materially and morally vandalized”, adding that he will reduce the numbers of ministries in his cabinet.
He affirmed that he cannot work outside the Nigerian constitution and that ministers must be appointed in conformity with the constitution of the federal government, hence his appointment from the 36 states of the country.

He said: ”We can0not work outside constitution; there must be a cabinet representative from each state. There used to be forty two ministers but I think we can barely keep half of that now because we cannot afford it.
”Others may not be substantive ministers but they will seat in the cabinet because that is what the constitution said and we can’t operate outside the constitution
”We are reducing the number of ministries we can’t afford to pay.”
Reacting to the president said he did not walk into the presidency alone therefore he cannot work alone.
”This is team work. I said I know people but there are people that I accept from other people in our team that I trust without even knowing them.
”Maybe those that are having problem in the National Assembly I doubt if I have meet him in my life but then I am working with others.
”I did not walk into the presidency alone. I have to depend on all the three tiers of government from all part of the country,” the president said.

The president has since departed India and arrived in Nigeria after his four-day official visit to the country. .
