Alcohol intake affects risk of Parkinson’s disease

For many years, researchers have been investigating whether there are any associations between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and lifestyle choices such as smoking and coffee and alcohol consumption.
I
n a review published in the Journal of Parkinson’s Disease, the literature concerning alcohol consumption presents conflicting information.
A systematic review of the relevant literature from 2000-2014, from observational studies, found little evidence for either a positive or negative effect on PD risk from alcohol consumption. When weak associations were observed in some reports, the authors found that the studies were at greater risk of selection and recall bias, which could compromise the effects found.

Sixteen articles that met the criteria for inclusion were identified. All were primary research articles, published in English in peer-reviewed journals. These studies had to include a comparison or control group consisting of individuals without PD, report a measure of association between quantity and frequency of alcohol intake and PD risk, and adjust at least for the potential confounding factors of smoking and age.

Research that measured alcohol exposure only as drinker versus non-drinker were excluded.
This review determined several possible methodological weaknesses that could explain the varying and often conflicting results of studies reporting lifestyle exposures such as smoking, coffee/tea and alcohol consumption contributing to PD risk,” explained lead investigator Silvana Bettiol, PhD, MPH, School of Medicine, University of Tasmania, Tasmania, Australia. “These included selection or self-selection of controls, difficulties in retrospective assessment of alcohol consumption, differences in the lengths of follow-up periods, and inconsistent definitions of drinkers and non-drinkers.”

In addition, in studies in which alcohol consumption and PD incidence were accurately measured over time, only non-significant associations were found, further supporting the argument that various limitations and biases affected many of the studies.

“This study highlights the need for more prospective studies investigating the relationship between alcohol and PD of adequate sample size. Improvements to reporting of studies by investigators particularly with respect to sample size and power would help others interpret the epidemiological significance of any findings,” concluded Dr. Bettiol. In summary, “most of the studies proved to be preliminary and improving statistical power to detect joint effects was encouraged.”

Prophet Predicts President Mugabe’s death

Controversial Malawian prophet, Austin Liabunya, has predicted the death of Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe.

According to Malawi24, the prophet said that the Mugabe, who has been president for over 30 years has until December 31. He also predicetd that the first lady, Grace Mugabe, ‘ will never win in Zimbabwean politics ’.

The controversial Malawian prophet has had predictions in the past that did not come to pass, but no one knows if Mugabe should worry or not. Liabunya said: “Mugabe’s biological clock will not tick beyond this year ” after which Zimbabwe will be
“restored” to be one of the richest countries in Africa.

The prophet also reportedly said first lady “will never win in Zimbabwean politics”.
However, quite a lot of people have dismissed Liabunya’s prophecies, citing a prediction he made in January, telling his followers that Zambian opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema would win the presidential elections. Sadly, the prediction didn’t see the light of the day.
Just recently, President Mugabe revealed he did not marry his wife, Grace, because of love , and revealed the real reasons. Robert Mugabe, who is often in the centre of controversy publicly proposed marriage to the US President Barrack Obama to make mockery of the legalization of gay marriage in the USA.

Celebrity Profile- Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most celebrated artists of all time. The Italian Renaissance artist was a master painter, engineer, architect, anatomist, inventor and sculptor. Leonardo is considered to be a genius, creating some of the most famous paintings ever painted (Including the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper) and his notebooks filled with drawings of many inventions that were to become the machines and technology that we now use (flying machines, submarines and war machines).

Leonardo da Vinc was borni on the 15th of April in 1452, in Anchiano, Vinci, not far from Florence in Italy. Hi father was a notary "ser Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci" and mother Caterina was a peasant woman. Leonardo was born an illegitimate child and raised in his father's home in Florence.

Leonardo impressed his father with his early drawings, prompting him to introduce the young Leonardo to the painter Andrea del Verrocchio. At just 14 Leonardo da Vinci became an apprentice of Verrochio and quickly became his most talented worker. In the painting "Baptism of Christ", Leonardo was assigned to paint one angel, while Verrocchio painted the other. Da Vinci chose to paint his angel in the relatively new medium of oil, while Verrocchio painted his in the usual tempera medium. The young Leonardo clearly upstaged his master, and left the studio of Verrocchio in 1477 to work in his own.

Da Vinci was employed by the Duke of Milan (Ludovico Sforza) in 1482, allowing him to work in his own workshop until after the Duke's fall to the French in 1498. Leonardo stayed until 1499, but moved on to Mantua, then to Venice where he was employed as a military engineer. He then worked for Cesare Borgia as a military architect in Florence until 1506, before returning to Milan. Leonardo worked in Rome between 1513 and 1516 where his contemporaries included great Renaissance painters like Michelangelo and Raphael. He then moved to France where he worked for the French King until his death in Clos Lucé, 1519.

Nude lip color looks great on all skin tones and we just can’t get enough of it. We will share with you the easiest ways of identifying the best lipstick for your skin undertone as a guideline.

How to Choose Best Nude Lipstick for Brown Skin

-Determine your skin undertones by observing the color of the veins under your wrist. If green then you are warm skin and if blue then you are cool skin tone complexion.
-Swipe a little lipstick on your wrist and make careful observation. The best nude lipstick for you is one or two shades darker than your skin undertones.
-Crème nude lipsticks are best for the beginners and anyone who is not sure of what to pick.

Dangote, Others Flag Off Nationwide Campaign On Cooking Gas

Vice president of the Dangote Group and president of the Gas to Health Initiative (GTHI), Sani Dangote, yesterday, in Abuja flagged off a nationwide pilot scheme that seeks to encourage Nigerians from all walks of life to embrace the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LP Gas).

The Gas to Health Initiative is aimed at protecting the health of Nigerians, as well as the preservation of the environment from deforestation.

Dangote who also launched a new book written by the Secretary of GTHI Mrs Betty Ugona, said the book addresses the key issues of acceptability of LP Gas, focusing on four cardinal elements: Efficiency, benefits, sensitization and the empowerment of core users of LP Gas.
Dangote bought 200 copies of the book titled:

“Who Cooks it feels the Brunt.”

“The book strikes on the root causes of low LP Gas usage and offers practical steps to achieving improved usage of LP Gas,” he said.
He said with an overabundance of resources and population of over 165million, Nigeria still ranks amongst the lowest in LP Gas consumption in ECOWAS member countries, with a per capita consumption of about 1.8kg, trailing countries like Senegal at 8.46kg, Cote D’Ivoire at 9.3kg and Ghana at 10kg per capita.

Dangote regretted that despite being rated as the leading producer of LP Gas in Africa with annual production of about 3.2 Million MT and 12th in Global ranking, the country still ranks abysmally low in terms of consumption of LP Gas and its application to other relevant domestic, industrial and social purposes.

According to him, about 56 per cent of energy needed for cooking within Nigeria is supplied by fuel wood (firewood) particularly in the rural areas, adding that the cumulative effect of this trend is the negative impact on citizen health, the environment, and economy as a whole.

FIFA ranking reflects Nigeria’s current status in world football- Disu

Former International, Tajudeen Disu, has expressed displeasure over the current position of the Super Eagles in the recent FIFA rankings, where Nigeria was placed 12th in Africa and 59th in the world.

Disu argues that Nigeria has no business being outside top 10 in Africa, saying it is unfortunate that the Super Eagles no longer commands respect in world football.

“I think the current rating goes to show that our game is declining and that we have not been doing well as far as results from matches played, both in competitive games and friendlies, are concerned,” he said.

The former captain of the defunct Abiola Babes Football Club, believes the country can still regain its pride in international football, adding that with hard work and dedication from all stakeholders, the Eagles can reach the top 10 in the world.

“I think there is still a lot of hard work to be done to regain back our pride of place, as a footballing nation. And for us to get there, we need to reorganise our league for better results. Players need to be discovered from our local leagues in order to have materials for the national team.

“I think we should know what to do to get back to our rightful position. We cannot be calling ourselves super power or African power and in the ranking we keep on going down. This is not good, it obviously tells you that we have to come together and do the right thing.

“The NFF has to think of what to do and focus on how to make sure that all is well with our senior national team. For now, I don’t think we really have a team as far as Super Eagles is concerned that can go out there and do the country proud.

“Politics and nepotism have taken over our national teams, and this is not good for the game. Politics has never helped any game in the world rather it kills it. We should sit down and look inwards, do our homework in order to regain back our days of glory,” he added.
