Man hangs himself due to hardship in Taraba

An unidentified man was found dangling from a tree  in the early hours of today, Thursday, November 19, in the premises of Hassan Suleiman Primary School, opposite Roman Catholic Church, Drowa, Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State.

According to residents who knew the man, he could have decided to end it all after he had suffered untold hardship with things not going his way despite his struggles.

To add to that, he was also said to be indebted to so many people and with the creditors on his neck and with no means of paying them back, he decided to call it quits with life .

Taliban gunmen launch suicide attack near Kandahar

Taliban militants wearing Afghan army uniforms launched a suicide and gun attack on a police headquarters near Kandahar Thursday, killing one soldier before the attackers were shot dead, authorities said.
The attack came at dawn in the district of Arghandab, some 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, a relatively quiet area unused to such attacks, which appear to be a sign of the Taliban’s alarming new push into urban areas.

Six people — five assailants and one Afghan army soldier — were killed in the attack, police told AFP.
“First one attacker detonated his vehicle laden with explosives at the entrance of the Arghandab police headquarters, then four others tried to enter the compound,” Zia Durrani, Kandahar police spokesman told AFP.

The attack lasted half an hour before the gunmen were killed by security forces, Durrani said.

Niaz Mohammad Mujahid, police chief for Arghandab district, said that one Afghan soldier was killed and three others were injured. A spokesman for the Kandahar governor confirmed the assault.

The Taliban, who have been fighting a bloody insurgency since they were driven from power in the US invasion of 2001, claimed responsibility for the attack.

“When I heard the explosion I thought of my son, who serves in the police force,” Shafi Aka, a local Arghandab resident, told AFP.
“I called my son right away and heard him saying, ‘We are under attack’.”

His son survived the assault.

Youths seek immediate restoration of power in Isokoland

YOUTHS in the two councils of Isokoland have called on the management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to restore forthwith power in the entire land, which it allegedly disconnected since October 21, 2015.

They claimed that communities in Isoko North and South councils of Delta State had overtime been subjected to all forms of sharp practices from the utility firm ranging from “indiscriminate collection and embezzlement of electricity bills to vandalisation of power facilities in the localities, which they alleged was being spearheaded by the Ughelli Business District of the company to paint the communities in bad light in the face of the disagreement between the parties.

In three petitions dated September 8, October 12 and 29, 2015 and addressed to BEDC, the state governor, the council chairmen, representative in the Senate and House of Representatives as well as their counterparts in the State House of Assembly and top security officials and concerned authorities, the youths, under the auspices of Isoko Progressive Youth Centre (IPYC) accused the Business Manager of Ughelli Business District, Engr. Pius Azeh, of highhandedness, insensitivity and egocentrism.

Tracing the genesis of the crisis, IPYC’s President General and Isoko National Youth Leader, Comrade Anthony Ogbalor, said all their peaceful overtures had been spurned by the Business Manager except for the meeting they had with him in Ughelli on September 21 this year, which according to Ogbalor, was unfruitful claiming that the management was unyielding and instead resolved to collect ‘‘outstanding debts” for services it allegedly never provided.

He said four issues were placed on the front turner during the parley which included steady electricity supply in Isoko nation, security of electricity installations in the land, clearing of all accumulated debts on customers’ bills and checking of alleged recklessness of staff of the firm as well as monitoring of all cash drive exercises and distribution of bills in the two councils.

Ogbalor said instead of addressing the above issues raised in the petitions and even at the meeting, the BEDC, through the Ughelli Business District, treated their demands with disdain and went ahead to deepen the crisis by disconnecting all in the two councils, thus throwing the entire land into total blackout since October 15 this year.

The youths, consequently, resolved that they had placed embargo on revenue drive until a time the BEDC deems it fit to engage them.

The youths fumed at the alleged lackadaisical attitude of BEDC towards the issues which they maintained were already inflicting untold hardship on the people.
Meanwhile, IPYC has termed a social media post authored by one Azilo Ogheneyule on November 3 this year regarding the current
imbroglio ‘‘a total lie.”

Reacting to the publication, the youths accused Azeh of influencing some Isoko leaders to take uninformed stand.

They also accused him of colluding with
some of the leaders to subvert the ‘‘truth of excessive vandalisation of Isoko transformers, printing of fake receipts to accumulate debts for the entire Isoko nation and the epileptic electricity supply that prompted the embargo.”

‘‘Whether the Business Manager likes it or not, the embargo placed on cash drive exercise still remains until these anomalies bothering the Isoko nation are resolved through a meeting where our evidence against BEDC will be made known to the general public.”

‘‘We are calling on the management of BEDC to warn Engr. Pius Azeh, Business Manager of Ughelli Business District, not to create any form of crisis in Isokoland with his egocentric attitude,” the youths stated.

Warri Wolves begin preparation for 2016 CAF Champions League

To avoid mistakes of the past, the management of Warri Wolves has commenced preparation for its participation in next year’s CAF Champions League.

Wolves finished second in the just concluded Glo Premier League behind Enyimba FC of Aba. While the Seasiders hammered visiting FC Taraba 5-1 in the final match of the season to end their campaign with 66 points, the People’s Elephants (Enyimba) played goalless with Sunshine Stars in Lagos to end their campaign on 70 points.

Super Eagles striker, Gbolahan Salami scored twice against FC Taraba to emerge top scorer for the 2014/15 with 17 goals.
Speaking with The Guardian yesterday, an official of Warri Wolves said that the club’s budget for the coming season, including their campaign in the 2016 CAF Champions League had been sent to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa through the Delta State Sports Commission.

“We need to start early for next season,” the official said. “We are happy for picking one of the CAF Champions league tickets, but the story would have been sweeter if we were able to win the Glo Premier League title as a welcome gift for our governor. We will do everything possible to compensate him with a trophy in the coming season. The budget we have presented is a moderate one and we hope the government will approve it on time,” he said.

On their last game against FC Taraba, the official said: “Our boys scored 5-1 in that game because they were really angry after Taraba scored one in the first half.

The Matchday 38 match was decided at the Warri Township Stadium on Monday morning after a torrential downpour forced a postponement on Sunday afternoon. Salami scored the first and last goals in the one-sided encounter.

Wolves started with early signs of the scoreline we should expect when Sikiru Alimi busted into space in the box before crossing for Osadiaye whose volley was cleared off the goal line.

Wolves got their noses in front on 13 minutes when Salami converted from the penalty spot after he was felled by Lucky Erimuya. Wolves however conceded a shock equalizer four minutes later. Wolves defender Uche Ossai diverted Konan Boris’s cross into his own net. It was the first and last goal Wolves would concede in Warri in the second half of the season.

The second goal however came just before the hour mark when Abu Azeez turned his marker before firing beyond Obilo at his near post.

Salami’s brace ensured he finished the season with 17 goals, one more than Sunshine’s Tunde Adeniji.

Military arrests suspected B’Haram kingpin, destroy bomb factory

AS troops of the Nigerian military continue the offensive against terrorists in the North East, a suspected notorious member of the Boko Haram sect was arrested on Sunday in Maiduguri, even as another brigade overran another terrorists camp, recovered some weapons and destroyed others.

A statement from the Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman said the suspect named John Trankil was arrested by troops of the 7 Division Garrison of the Nigerian Army of Operation Lafiya Dole at Kasuwar Shanu (cattle market) in Maiduguri metropolis. And has confessed to plans by nine of his other colleagues, who are also fully armed, to carry out a coordinated attack in different parts in the city.

According to him, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect said that nine of them sneaked into Maiduguri armed with AK 47 assault rifle each and a Hilux vehicle laden with 20 Improvised Explosive Devices meant to be detonated at some selected targets in the city.”

The Operation Commander, Maj. Gen. Yusha’u Abubakar, while commending the efforts of the troops reiterated the call on them to be more alert “and the public to be vigilant and security conscious particularly at all check points, markets, worship centres, motor parks and schools.”
Meanwhile troops of 21 Brigade Nigerian Army, with support from the Nigerian Air Force carried out another offensive on the terrorists’ location within the outskirt of Bama town in Borno State, destroying weapon making factory operated by the insurgents.
The statement reads in part, “In a related development, troops, while on offensive operations on Boko Haram terrorists location, with the support from the Nigerian Air Force discovered and destroyed the terrorists’ Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and rocket making factory along Bama-Gonin Kurmi within the outskirts of Bama town in Borno State.

“The items recovered include gas cylinders, welding machine, pipes and poles. Others include locally made rocket shells, large quantity of assorted chemicals, unprimed IEDs and various technical and laboratory equipment suspected to be stolen from schools’ laboratories around Bama before they were dislodged from the area.”
