British Council holds 2015 Education UK postgraduate Exhibition

Last week, the British Council hosted its third yearly Education UK Postgraduate Exhibition in Lagos and Abuja.

The three-day event hosted by over 40 UK institutions served as a platform for both UK institutions and students interested in studying in the UK.

Speaking at the exhibition in Lagos, Sephora Imomoh, Project Manager, British Council, said, “In 2013, we piloted the postgraduate focused exhibition because of the demand for information specifically around postgraduate international qualifications. The event is designed to provide avenue where prospective students can get immediate responses to their questions about postgraduate study in the UK.

“UK courses give individuals the skills, qualifications and connections needed to succeed in their chosen career. UK degrees have a global reputation for quality and employers worldwide recognise them for their high standards”

Presenting his institution’s offer to visitors, Dr. David Lonie of Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, said; “Robert Gordon University is well-renowned for its expertise in subjects as diverse as art and design, management and engineering.

Explaining why the University of Brighton is suitable for international students, Barry Lee Scherer, Principal Lecturer at the school, said the institution is great for students because of the city’s proximity to London, its exit routes to Central and Western European and its serene atmosphere.

Visitors to the exhibition acknowledged that it was a worthwhile experience. Bassey Blessing, a graduate of Business Management said; “I visited several stands and discussed with their officials who explained that as a postgraduate student, I would be allowed to work in the UK while studying and I think I like that.

Jibodu Oluwabusola, a graduate of Architecture, said the event met her expectations. “It has been really helpful to be able to meet the delegates one-on-one.

"Leave church doors open"- Pontiff declares

In the wake of the Paris attacks, churches have now been working on upgrading security but Pope Francis advises against this.

The pope maintains that the church must stay open despite all these terror fears.
"Please, no armoured doors in the Church, everything open," the 78-year-old pontiff told pilgrims in St Peter's square, Italy.
"There are places in the world where doors should not be locked with a key. There are still some but there are also many where armoured doors have become the norm.

"We must not surrender to the idea that we must apply this way of thinking to every aspect of our lives, ... " Francis said, "To do so to the Church would be terrible."

He urged the Church to keep its doors open to lapsed believers who are considering returning and to the hundreds of thousands of migrants arriving in Europe from Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.

Naeto C has announced a new album to be released this year “ Festival”, and the album artwork has been unveiled.

FBI, New York police aware of Islamic State video, say no specific threat

There is no “specific and credible threat” against New York City, despite a newly released Islamic State video suggesting America’s most populous city is a potential target of attacks such as those in Paris, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday.
Police Commissioner William Bratton agreed with the mayor during an evening news conference by both men outside a police precinct in Times Square, adding that there was nothing new about the video, which he called “hastily produced.”

“There is no credible and specific threat against New York City,” de Blasio said, encouraging New Yorkers to “go about their business” as normal, while remaining watchful.

Islamic State has claimed credit for Friday’s attacks in Paris that killed 129 people in shootings and suicide bombings at a concert hall, restaurants and a soccer stadium in Paris.

The assault on the French capital stirred memories in New York of the September 11, 2001, hijacked plane attacks that felled the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, killing more than 2,600 people.

The Islamic State video, which runs for nearly six minutes, includes a scene that appears to show a suicide bomber making preparations and zipping up a jacket, according to a description provided by SITE Intelligence Group, a Bethesda, Maryland, organisation that tracks militant groups, reports Reuters.

The clip briefly shows Times Square and Herald Square, two Midtown Manhattan crossroads popular with tourists, and a suicide bomber holding what appears to be a trigger.

Taliban gunmen launch suicide attack near Kandahar

Taliban militants wearing Afghan army uniforms launched a suicide and gun attack on a police headquarters near Kandahar Thursday, killing one soldier before the attackers were shot dead, authorities said.
The attack came at dawn in the district of Arghandab, some 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, a relatively quiet area unused to such attacks, which appear to be a sign of the Taliban’s alarming new push into urban areas.

Six people — five assailants and one Afghan army soldier — were killed in the attack, police told AFP.
“First one attacker detonated his vehicle laden with explosives at the entrance of the Arghandab police headquarters, then four others tried to enter the compound,” Zia Durrani, Kandahar police spokesman told AFP.

The attack lasted half an hour before the gunmen were killed by security forces, Durrani said.

Niaz Mohammad Mujahid, police chief for Arghandab district, said that one Afghan soldier was killed and three others were injured. A spokesman for the Kandahar governor confirmed the assault.

The Taliban, who have been fighting a bloody insurgency since they were driven from power in the US invasion of 2001, claimed responsibility for the attack.

“When I heard the explosion I thought of my son, who serves in the police force,” Shafi Aka, a local Arghandab resident, told AFP.
“I called my son right away and heard him saying, ‘We are under attack’.”

His son survived the assault.
