Obama gives last State of the Union address

Barack Obama gives his final State of the Union address on Tuesday, perhaps the last opportunity of his presidency to sway a national audience and frame the 2016 election.

The White House is promising an unorthodox speech, with Obama eschewing the traditional checklist of legislative priorities.

Instead, aides said that America’s first black president will use a “singular moment” to define his place in the history books and stoke optimism about the future.

The speech, under construction since the autumn, will challenge Americans to address big unfinished business, from race to gun violence to drug abuse.

Not for the first time during Obama’s seven years in the White House, he will lean heavily on his dazzling rhetorical skills to push forward his agenda.

Obama is unlikely to dwell on the 2016 election race for too long, but in embracing optimism, the White House hopes to draw a sharp contrast with Republicans.

Around 30 million viewers are expected to watch live, a nationwide audience that may only be matched in political terms during the Democratic nominating convention later this year.

Obama aides are trying to leverage the moment for all its worth, amplifying his message across social and digital media.

Amazon is planning to air the speech on demand, the White House has joined Snapchat for the occasion and will use Genius — a program that started life as a font for rap lyrics — to annotate Obama’s remarks.

Afterwards, Obama will travel to Nebraska and Louisiana to sell his message and be interviewed by three YouTube celebrities.

– High risk, high reward –
It is a high-risk strategy for Obama, who with just a year left in office could look cripplingly out of touch if he misjudges the nation’s mood.

Amid poisoned politics, terror threats and middle-class malaise, some 67 percent of Americans believe the country is going in the wrong direction, according to a recent Rasmussen poll.

While unemployment rates are low, the economy is growing and the tumult of the financial crisis has passed, wage growth is lackluster and the gap between rich and poor is cavernous.

“Workers don’t experience statistics, they feel market forces,” wrote former George W. Bush aide Matt McDonald in a recent paper for Hamilton Place Strategies, a consultancy.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest acknowledged economic and security challenges, but said the willingness of Republicans “to exploit people’s fears and insecurities and anxieties has infected the political debate.”

“The president’s reaction to that though is that he has never been more confident about our ability to confront successfully those challenges.”

Obama has long thought of his presidency in such historic terms. But the broad sweep of his speech is also born of necessity.

He faces a hostile Republican Congress united only in its disdain for him and his agenda.

Republican criticism is likely to focus on Obama’s handling of foreign policy, in particular the rise of the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.
“US engagement has for too long been defined by whether troops are deployed,” said one senior White House official describing Obama’s intention to defend his foreign policy.

The speech begins at 0200 GMT on Wednesday.

Seven Fashion And Beauty New Year Resolutions

It is still a new year and most of us are still in the spirit of resolutions, (new year, new me) and so beyond the usual suspects ó shedding some weight, saving more money and becoming more religious ó weíve got a few style-specific resolutions to add to your list. Whether it is donating the clothes you hardly ever wear or adopting a healthier skincare regimen, there is no better time to give your fashion and beauty habits an overhaul than the present.
Look at this list and decide which you i'll be adding to your New Year resolutions.

(1) Shop your closet: In these times of austerity measures and economic downturn, instead of hitting up the stores or flipping out your cards for online shopping and getting yourself into yourself into unnecessary debt, consider all the hidden treasures in your closet. WE've all got things we haven't worn in months (or even years) that can be refreshed. There might even be some clothes and shoes with tags still on them hiding amongst the confusion. Take a deep dive into your closet and be pleasantly surprised with what you will find.

(2) Take more beauty risks: Try those colors in your eye shadow palette that you've never touched before ó maybe a purple, burgundy or teal. Also pull out that siren red lipstick you've been too afraid to put on. You might find the brighter your lip, the brighter your day.

(3) Invest in classic pieces: Don't spend your hard earned money on trendy clothes that you'll be sick of after a season or two. Invest in classic pieces like a great blazer or black cashmere sweater that you'll have forever.

(4) Maintain a healthy skincare regimen: No more going to bed with a face full of makeup. Make a vow to take care of your skin this year by using great products, scheduling facials, hydrating and eating the right foods for a glowing complexion. Say a firm bye to beauty laziness and stand by it.

(5) Make an underwear overhaul: It is time throw out those under garments you've been holding onto for the past decade. Don't you want the traders to sell? Invest in a new, comfortable and quality collection of underthings. Great underwear adds some unseen confidence to your personal swag in case you didn't know.

(6) Get organized: Time to get those dressers and drawers into shape. And once you do, donít let your clothes go back to being small mountains on the floor and chair.

(7) Wear more color: Itís so easy to keep slipping on that same black/blue dress or your go-to t-shirt and jeans. Spice things up this year by simply adding more color and variety to your look. Who knows how this may help career or relationship-wise?

FASHION TREND: The Kimono Craze

As trends go, one of the most interesting is the kimono and how it evolved to suit today’s woman. The kimono was originally a Japanese dress, worn long with flowing wide sleeves.

It also came with a wide belt that was tied in a complicated sash that looked quite uncomfortable.
In today’s fashion world however, they are a very versatile item to own. Worn correctly, they can take you from day to night and office to the beach without compromising on your modish look. You can wear them in different colours, patterns and fabrics, most common of which are the light airy fabrics.

Throw on a patterned or floral kimono over an all-white ensemble to break up the monotony. You could also opt for a kimono to create a dramatic colour block look with brilliant shades that complement each other.

Ankara fabrics too can make a mean kimono. One of the favourite things about the kimono style that has made it a chic favourite is the forgiving nature of the style.

It hides your flaws while leaving you tastefully clad. Because it is light, it is perfect for sunny days while leaving you with a classy cover if it becomes chilly.

This makes it perfect for this harmattan season that can go from sunny and hot to dry and chilly toward evening. Throw a long kimono over a pair of short shorts, tight slinky dress and make them more appropriate for day time. a kimono is also perfect for a pool or beach wrap.

\Belt the kimono for a different silhouette. You can also style the kimono with chunky heels, stilettoes and wedges. A structured bag or envelope clutch is cool for office while a fringed cross body or vintage bags will be the consummate boho-chic friend.

You should also accessories sensibly; chunky statement neckpieces should not always be your first choice if you still have green feet about kimonos.

15 Things That Happen When Your Friend Has a New Crush

1. You're excited for your friend. Crushes are fun! At least, um, kind of.

2. You talk about how cute they are. A LOT. These conversations take place in the caf, in homeroom, in gym class, after school in Maggie's basement, and even across the room during a school dance. This week alone, you've already covered how incredibly soft and touchable their hair looks, that cute face they make when they're goofing off with their friends, and how nice their skin is. And it's only Tuesday.

3. You've had tough talks about their chances. Obviously your friend REALLY wants things to work out with her crush, so you talk about it constantly. But these conversations can prompt some sticky questions. Like, does the crush even know your friend exists? Do they ever talk? Is her crush single? You don't really know what to say.

4. If her crush is a shot in the dark, you feel like a terrible friend. Your friend is obsessed with someone she's never even spoken to, or who is dating someone else. Should you let her down easy, or indulge her fantasy? You don't want her to be mad at you for telling the truth, but you don't want to give her false hope, either.

5. You've analyzed a million possible strategies for making something happen with her crush. Should your friend tell her crush she likes them, or is it better for her to drop hints and see if they make the first move? Lots of planning goes into this, trust.

6. Every time their crush walks by you actually get butterflies. It's crazy — this is your friend's crush, not yours. But you've spent so much time obsessing with your friend over them, and you know so many ~secrets~ about them that you're afraid you'll accidentally blurt out that you can't help but get nervous any time you see them.

7. But you also wish you could tell your friend to stop bugging you every time their crush walks by. You're like, "Seriously. I get it. You cross paths. Wooooooo."

8. Every time you friend starts a conversation with, "He/she said..." you know exactly who they're talking about. As if the conversation could be about anyone else.

9. Reading their conversations is creepy, even if your friend gave you permission. You can't shake the feeling that you're invading their privacy. But you gotta push through the creeps, because your friend wants your feedback on ~exactly~ what you think their crush meant by ending a text with an ellipsis instead of a period.

10. You know way too much about someone you've barely ever spoken to. Which side they part their hair on.  Their class schedule. The exact shade of their eyes (more "ocean blue" than "sky blue," btw). When you finally do speak to them — even if it's just for five seconds when you end up on the same ultimate frisbee team in gym class — you're worried you'll accidentally spill some of this mega-creepy info you shouldn't know but do. Fortunately for your friend's dignity, you do not.

11. You've already promised to be a bridesmaid in their future wedding. In turn, she's promised to not force you to wear an ugly dress. #friendshipgoals

12. If you're in a relationship, you've talked about going on double dates. It will be so much fun!

13. You wish you knew what to say. Giving thoughtful advice to your friend is hard, especially when you barely know the person they're crushing on. Sometimes you want to give your friend rock-solid advice, but other times, you're just kind of like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

14. Sometimes you just want to scream, "OH MY GOD, SHUT UP ABOUT YOUR CRUSH!" As much as you love your BFF and you know she can't help herself, her obsessing can drive you nuts from time to time.

15. But you'd never say "shut up" because she's always been there to listen to you obsess over your crush. It's just one of the many reasons you love her!

Right or wrong???

7 Brainstorming Tricks to Inspire Brilliant Ideas

Coming up with fresh, new ideas isn't easy. And when your job requires churning them out on a daily basis, it can be easy to hit a wall. (Not to mention frustrating.)

That's why brainstorming sessions can be so helpful. But, as many of you probably know by experience, some brainstorming sessions are more productive than others. Ever been to a one where you left feeling like your team didn't really come away with anything useful? It's draining -- and it can feel like a waste of you and your team's time. Great brainstorming sessions, on the other hand, can be wonderfully revitalizing.
The best way to get the creative juices flowing isn't by sitting your team around a conference table and asking them to shout out ideas as they come to them. It's by creating an atmosphere that breaks people out of their traditional mindset.
Here are a few creative ways to help liven up your brainstorming sessions to improve your team's output of ideas.

7 Brainstorming Tricks to Inspire Brilliant Ideas

1) Come up with bad ideas first.
The best brainstorming sessions come when everyone in the room feels comfortable throwing out all of their ideas, regardless of whether or not they're gold. But some members on your team might be worried they'll sound stupid or uninformed if they pitch ideas that aren't well thought-out. Studies have shown people are especially apprehensive when people in positions of power are present -- this apprehension can lead to major productivity loss in brainstorming groups.
One way to loosen people up and get the ideas flowing? Start out brainstorming sessions by spending 10 minutes coming up with a bunch of bad ideas first. You might throw one out yourself first to show them what you mean. This will help you set a much more open and playful tone than a formal atmosphere would. Gerry Graf of Barton F. Graf 9000 has his team come up with 4,000 bad ideas before coming up with good ones.

Once you've spent some time sharing throwaway ideas and having a few laughs, you can refocus on brainstorming ideas that could work. And who knows: An idea that isn't so great on its own could spark some really ingenous ones that inform the direction of the rest of the meeting.

2) Break and build ideas.
One way to turn a few ideas into many is by breaking them down or building them up. If you're starting with a really general theme, try breaking it down into parts and details and seeing if other ideas branch from it. Or, you can do the opposite, and build up a more specific idea to have it cover a broader perspective.

One way to break down or build up ideas is to have each person in the room jot down two or three ideas on their own pieces of paper. Then, have them trade papers with other members of their team and build off their coworkers' ideas. You can rotate papers several times, and start a discussion based off the new ideas that emerge.

3) Play word games.
Word games can be powerful ways to help remove you from the traditional mindset that tends to produce generic, unoriginal ideas. If you're trying to get out of an idea rut, try adding a few games to your meeting to drum up some out-of-the-box thinking.
One great word exercise is creating a "word storm." To create a word storm, write down one word, and then brainstorm a whole slew of words that come to mind from that first word. Try thinking about the function of that word, its aesthetics, how it's used, metaphors that can be associated with it, and so on. Let the ideas flow naturally, and don't over think it -- this is meant to be a creative exercise.

Once you've listed out a bunch of words, group them together according to how they're related to one another. The goal? To come up with those less obvious words or phrases your audience might associate with whatever project you're working on.

You can record the word storm on a piece of paper or a whiteboard or by using this online word storm tool to create a visual map -- which you can save, export, and send to the team after the meeting.
Mind mapping is another powerful brainstorming tool to visualize related terms and ideas. Create a diagram starting with a central idea, and then branch out into major sub-topics and then sub-sub-topics. You can create mind maps either on paper or a whiteboard or by using something like
MindNode app . Finally, another word game you could try is coming up with what Creative Bloq calls "essence words:" Words that capture the spirit, personality, and message you're trying to put across -- even if they seem crazy. You might find that it helps spark other ideas down the line.

4) Create a mood board.
Combining imagery, color, and visual-spatial arrangements can help surface emotions and feelings will spark fresh, new ideas. It's also been proven to significantly improve information recall in comparison to more conventional methods of learning.
While there are many ways to use visual prompts in brainstorming, creating a mood board is one of the most common -- especially in coming up with new branding and design concepts.

A mood board is simply a random collection of images, words, and textures focused on one topic, theme, or idea. Like with mind mapping, the visual components of the mood board can be anything branching off that central topic.

Mood boards can either be physical boards (e.g., a poster or cork board) or virtual (e.g., a Pinterest board). You can also use a tool such as the MoodBoard app to help you collect, organize, and share all the visual components needed for your board.

5) Play improv games.
Nothing gets the creative juices flowing like a little improvisation. This may sound silly, but hear me out: The more relaxed and playful the environment is (without being distracting), the more your team will feel comfortable thinking and sharing freely with one another.
Corey Blake, the CEO of RoundTable Companies, told The Huffington Post about a time he and his executive team opened a brainstorming session with a series of improv games. "That experience opened our minds and readied the team for play before diving into more traditional brainstorming," Blake said. "The result was a deeper dive into our exploration and more laughter and fun, which increased our aptitude for creativity."
If your team can relax briefly and laugh together, your creative energy will be much higher when you refocus on the project at hand.

6) Doodle.
Did you know that doodling can help spur creative insight, increase attention span, and free up short- and long-term memory?
Sunni Brown, author of The Doodle Revolution, wrote that, "When the mind starts to engage with visual language, you get the neurological access that you don't have when you're in linguistic mode."
While many brainstorming sessions are based on talking and reading, doodling helps people break out of the traditional mindset and think about familiar things in a different way, perhaps leading to unexpected connections.

What should you doodle? Here are two ideas from Brown's book:

Take an object and visually break it down into its tiniest parts. So if you start with the word "dog," you might draw paws, a tail, and a collar. Thinking about all the elements of that object and the environment it is found in will allow you to view an object in a new way.

"Take two unrelated things, like elephants and ice cream, and draw them in their atomized parts," writes Jennifer Miller for Fast Company . "Then create drawings that randomly fuse these parts together. Like trunk-cones or melting ears. Brown has used this technique to help journalists think up unique story angles."

7) Change your physical environment.
Switching up your physical environment isn't just a fun change of pace; it can actually affect the way your brain works. Neurobiologists believe enriched environments could speed up the rate at which the human brain creates new neurons and neural connections. That means that where you conduct your brainstorming sessions could have an affect on the ideas your team comes up with.

Try holding brainstorming sessions in rooms that aren't associated with regular team meetings. If you can't change the room itself, try changing something about the room to stimulate the brain, such as rearranging the chairs or putting pictures on the walls. Another idea is to have your team stand up and walk around while brainstorming to encourage fluid creativity.

More Victims Counted In Mass Abuse Of Catholic Choir Boys In Germany

An ongoing investigation revealed additional allegations of sexual and physical abuse by priests of members of a boys choir in Germany. In this 2008 photo, an Austrian boys choir performs in a Catholic church.

A lawyer says the number of children sexually or physically abused by priests while serving in a choir run by Pope Emeritus Benedict's brother at their Catholic school in the German city of Regensburg totals 231. That’s more than three times as many cases as had been reported previously by the church.

Ulrich Weber, a lawyer hired by the church, announced the new cases Friday as part of his continued investigation into the scandal concerning Domspatzen which is the official choir for St. Peter’s Cathedral in Bavaria, Germany. The first allegations of sexual abuse were made public in 2010 when a well-known composer named Franz Wittenbrink told the German magazine Spiegel he had been abused while enrolled there.

Weber said the reported instances of sexual abuse included offenses such as fondling and rape while physical abuses such as withholding food and beatings also occurred. He says victims named 10 perpetrators, reports the French news service Agence France-Presse.

The alleged abuse occurred between 1953 and 1992. For 30 of those years, the choir was run by the older brother of Pope Benedict, who resigned from service in 2013 due to declining health.

Overall, 2,100 students participated in the choir during that period. Weber said he expects as many as a third of participants may have been abused over the years. Last year, the church began paying compensation of 2,500 euros to victims.

The famous group of boys and young men is also known as the “Cathedral Sparrows” and is more than 1,000 years old. They sing each Sunday at the cathedral in Regensburg and also travel the world to perform.

Around the world, at least 3,400 allegations of sexual abuse have been made against Catholic clergy. Benedict defrocked 384 accused priests in the final two years of his reign. The Catholic Church spent more than $150 million in just one year to investigate the claims.

THE TOILET YOU CLEAN ONLY ONCE IN A YEAR

An "intelligent" toilet that opens when you approach it and self-cleans with every flush is on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

It also cleans the user with an aerated wand, which delivers warm water and warm air "from a seated position", a spokeswoman said.

Despite a $9,800 (£6,704) price tag, more than 40 million earlier versions of the Neorest toilets have been sold.
Bathroom firm Toto said the new prototype was still in development.

Its self-cleaning process uses a combination of a disinfectant and a glaze - made out of zirconium and titanium dioxide - which coats the bowl.
"Once it flushes it sprays the interior of the bowl with electrolysed water," explained Toto spokeswoman Lenora Campos.

"That's regular tap water we run through a proprietary process that uses an anodic cathode to create what is essentially a weak bleach, and it bleaches the interior, killing anything in the bowl."
Meanwhile an ultraviolet light in the lid charges the surface.

That makes it super-hydrophilic - or water-loving, so nothing can stick to it - and also photocatalytic, enabling oxygen ions to break down bacteria and viruses.

"You don't have to clean the toilet bowl for over a year," said Ms Campos.

The BBC asked several of Las Vegas' hotels if they might be interested in such a product, but all declined to comment.
However, one smart home expert said the device proved there was still space for innovation beyond hooking things up to the internet.

"It illustrates the notion that tech breakthroughs involve rethinking things," said Frank Gillett from the tech consultancy Forrester Research.

"It's not necessarily about adding anything new."
Potential purchasers should be warned, however, that the device does not totally absolve them of toilet cleaning duties since its cleansing techniques do not extend to spills outside of the bowl.
