Amari Sunday, the young man that was tortured by a group of army cadets in Abuja in 2014, was a guest on Channels TV this morning, where he narrated what happened. Amari was a staff of Abuja Park "N" Pay. He was working under SureP and was assigned to Jabi Lake where the incident happened. He said his initial offence was his inability to get to an army officer who called him from a distance within 5 seconds. He claimed that it was while they were beating him that the lady asked him if she was beautiful...and when he answered in the affirmative, another round of beating started. He said he sustained various degrees of injuries from the assault. The cadets that did this are yet to be punished...

Kanu Nwankwo included in list of world legends

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), have named Nwankwo Kanu, as one the top 48 legends of football all over the world.


Kanu, who played for Ajax, Inter Milan and Arsenal during his stint in Europe, was listed alongside Brazilian greats like Pele and Ronaldo de Lima.


The former Super Eagles star, is the last Nigerian to be named CAF African Footballer of the Year, back in 1999.


Other Africans who made the cut include: former World Player of the Year George Oppong Weah, Roger Milla, Rabah Medjer, Muhammed Aboutrika, Mohmud El-Khatub and former South Africa captain Lucas Radebe.


IFFHS, who are recognised by FIFA, archive football records, statistics and records of associations across the globe.

Jose Mourinho, sacked as manager of Chelsea in December seven months after winning the Premier League title, has said he is not enjoying his time out of work and will soon be back in management.

He did not comment directly on media reports that have heavily linked him with Louis Van Gaal’s job at Manchester United.

But he did say that his family will remain in London and that he liked the competitiveness of English football.

“For sure, I will be back soon,” the Portugese told GQ magazine in an interview published on its website (www.gq-magazine.co.uk). It did not say when the interview took place.
“(London) is an amazing place to live and for the family to be together,” said Mourinho.


“As a professional, I am ready to move,” added the former Real Madrid coach.

“I need competition every week. In Spain I was at an amazing club but I had four matches a year – Barcelona v Real Madrid, Real Madrid v Barcelona.”

Mourinho, who also won the league with Chelsea in his first two seasons there from 2004 to 2006, suggested that he deliberately created “instability” among players once they won trophies, to avoid any complacency.

“If you are in a club that wins, if you want to win again you have to create instability in the winners,” added the Portuguese, fired by Chelsea after a run of poor form by the champions.
“You have to make them doubt, you have to buy new players, you have to make them feel not in their comfort zone.

“There is a normal tendency to go to your comfort zone. If you don’t react, if you believe that just because you won in one year that you are going to win again, it’s very difficult.”

He said of his current unemployment, “I am not enjoying it. To be fully happy I need everything, so I go back to football. I think it’s my natural habitat.”

Meanwhile Van Gaal told reporters that stories linking Mourinho with his job were hurtful to him and his family.

“The last two months have been very difficult for my wife, my kids, my grandchildren and my friends,” he said.

“I do not believe there is already a relationship between Jose Mourinho and Manchester United.”

Our girls will return – Chibok community replies Obasanjo

Members of the Chibok community in Borno State have faulted former president, Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent assertion that the 219 missing schoolgirls will never return again.


The girls were abducted from their hostels on April 14, 2014 by the Boko Haram insurgents.


Obasanjo had in a recent statement affirmed that it was practically impossible for the military operatives, who failed to rescue the girls within 72 hours, when there was a window of opportunity, to do so.

But in a quick reaction to the former president’s statement, some leaders of Chibok community said Obasanjo was entitled to his opinion on the matter.

One of the Chibok leaders, who spoke on behalf of the community, insisted that by God’s grace, the girls will return home alive.

The community leader who spoke with Leadership said: “Obasanjo is a respected former president and retired military officer who may have his reasons for making such statement but, to us, he is entitled to his opinion, because we still believe the girls are alive and can be rescued.

“Our hope lies on the fact that since their abduction, none of them has been found dead or alive; and that, to us, is a good sign that they are alive.

We would have been worried had there been any form of report that some of the girls were found dead, or some have been rescued during the rescue operations that were carried out recently.

“Going by the activities of the Boko Haram terrorists in the last four years, one would be deceiving himself to say that they are not an intelligent lot. They know the high premium the world has placed on the need to rescue the girls; so the schoolgirls may be their priced asset for bargain when push comes to shove. We don’t know where they are, but we believe our girls are kept somewhere, either within or outside the country. And our prayer is that, one day, we may see them, even though we are not ruling out the fact that it is a difficult task and all of them may not be rescued at the end of the day.”

Nigerians say the Federal Government Should ban Hijabs

The debate on the use of the apparel worn by Muslim women to conceal some parts of their anatomy and for modesty (Hijab) has been going on for many years especially with the Boko Haram suicide bombers hiding under the Hijabs to carry out bombings in the North East parts of the country.


President Muhammadu Buhari had mooted the idea of banning the use of the apparels until the terrorists are defeated but many have argued that Nigeria, a ban on the use of the apparel would mean placing a restriction on those who use it and see it as a clampdown on Islam.

Countries like Chad, Niger and even the Gambia, where they have a larger Muslim population, have placed a ban on the use of Hijab in public but proponents of the Hijab in Nigeria have warned the government against considering it, especially going by the fact that religion is a very touchy issue in the country and many would see it as clamping down on the rights of the Muslims.

Army Tasks Personnel On Efficiency

The Nigerian Army has asked its personnel to be above board in conduct and proficiency in the discharge of their duties.

The Commander, Training and Doctrine Command of the Nigerian Army, Major General Mobolaji Koleoso, made the demand while addressing 143 lieutenants who were about to write promotion exams to the rank of captain.

General Koleoso told the officers that the exams were to test the ability of officers at administering human resources at various formations.

He admonished the officers to ensure that Army protocols and discipline were strictly adhered to at all times before, during and after the exams.

According to him, those in the war front would also be included at their various posts.

In his address, the Grand Officer Commanding Two Mechanised Division, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment Ojoo, Major General Laz Ilo, also described the examination as pivotal to the platoon commanders, as it would build their competence to meet contemporary challenges including those in the northeast where military personnel are fighting insurgency.

A total of 246 candidates from all the Army formations in Nigeria would be examined to proceed from lieutenants to the rank of captain.

While 143 of them were present at the officers mess of Two Mechanised Division, Agodi in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, the remaining 103 would be tested at their various posts in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa States, as they fight insurgents.

UN Security Council Condemns North Korea’s Rocket Launch

The UN Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea’s launch of a long-range rocket, with members considering new sanctions.

After an urgent meeting in New York, the council said it would soon adopt a new sanctions resolution in response.

The long-rang rocket launch had drawn criticisms from different countries, with North Korea describing the act as a test of ‘Banned Missile Technology’.

Pyongyang said it fired the rocket to place a satellite in orbit – but critics believe the real purpose was to test a ballistic missile.

Sunday’s launch comes weeks after North Korea held a fourth nuclear test – both acts violate UN resolutions.

Speaking after the closed-door talks, Venezuela’s UN envoy Rafael Ramirez, the current council president, said: “The members of the Security Council strongly condemn this launch.”

He called it “a serious violation of the Security Council resolution”.

The BBC quotes US Ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, as saying that Washington would now “ensure that the Security Council imposes serious consequences” on Pyongyang.

“There can be no business as usual. We’ll come up with something tough,” she said.

Her words were reiterated by Japanese envoy Motohide Yoshikawa, who said sanctions must be strengthened.

“The existing sanctions have not stopped North Korea from developing nuclear weapons,” he said.

The council meeting was requested by South Korea, Japan and the US.

2016 Budget: Presidency Gives Reasons For Social Investments Allocation

The Presidency in Nigeria has given the reason behind the allocation of 500 billion Naira estimate in the 2016 budget to social investments, saying it was necessitated by the need to pay attention on the common man and spend the resources of the country on the poor people.

In a statement on Sunday, the Senior Special Assistant-Media & Publicity in the Office of the Vice President, Mr Laolu Akande, pointed out that at no time in the nation’s budgetary history had the Federal Government made a specific vote of such volume for social welfare.

“Even economic historians now say that not only is the half a trillion Naira vote unprecedented, but it is also the greatest service ever done to the Nigerian state and people by any federal government administration,” Akande claimed.

He further explained that the six social safety plans would reduce high levels of poverty and vulnerabilities while also increasing Nigeria’s Human Development Index on the global UN rankings.

“The President’s vision is to increase investments in human capital to guarantee security for all, employment and improved well-being of the people,” the Vice President’s media aide added.

He stated that the presidency was aware that past attempts to address poverty had suffered because of insufficient political will, presence of various UN-coordinated initiatives and poorly targeted beneficiaries among other factors, and was working to avoid the pitfalls.

Conditional Cash Transfer

The Senior Special Assistant further explained that for the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), where one million extremely poor Nigeria would receive 5000 Naira monthly in 2016, the money would be paid directly to the beneficiaries through a payment system that was being worked out.

He said World Bank and the Bill Gates Foundation were collaborating with the presidency to develop an efficient payment system.

“All together, about 60 billion Naira has been estimated to be paid out to extremely poor Nigerians. And the implementation of the programme starts once the budget is passed.

“There would also be direct payment in the Homegrown School Feeding Programme.

“In the case of the CCT, those one million poor Nigerians would be paid directly, while in the case of the Homegrown School Feeding, the suppliers of the meals to the primary school pupils will also be paid directly by the Federal Government. There would be no middle agents involved, official or private,” Akande stated.

The media aide observed that the recipients of the CCT would meet the conditions of their children participating in immunisation and school enrolment and also boost the economy, as the money would boost consumer spending in the economy.

Regarding the Homegrown School Feeding programme, Mr Akande said that the Federal Government would start a pilot scheme in selected states once the budget was passed.

‘One-meal-a-day’

The one-meal-a-day programme is also being supported by the Imperial College in the UK through one of its agencies Partnership for Child Development.

According to Mr Akande, the Homegrown School Feeding will feed the children, help their learning significantly and also boost the local economy of the states and the local communities.

The Statement further said that the Buhari administration had four other social investment plans, including the 500,000 direct jobs, where unemployed graduates would be trained and hired to become volunteer teachers in their communities while looking for jobs in their chosen profession.

There is also a Youth Employment plan that would take 370,000 non-graduates youths through skills acquisition and vocational training programmes.

“Like the teaching jobs, the selection of beneficiaries for this scheme would be done on states and FCT basis, opened to all Nigerians of different shades.
