President Buhari to pray for peace in Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari will begin a week-long official visit to Saudi Arabia and Qatar , Monday, February 22, where he will hold prayers for greater peace, prosperity and progress in Nigeria.

President will is expected to visit Medina and Mecca to pray for greater peace, prosperity and progress in Nigeria.

Disclosing details of the president’s trip in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, February 21, Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on media and publicity stated that President Buhari will be accompanied by a high-powered federal government delegation, comprising of the Minister of State (Petroleum) and Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC), Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, among others.

He said the president will first fly to
“Riyadyh for talks on Tuesday with King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and senior officials of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”.

Adesina noted that expected to be high on the agenda of discussions between President Buhari and the Saudi Monarch are the ongoing efforts by Nigeria and other members of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to achieve greater stability in the price of crude oil exports.

“Crude oil prices and market stability will also be on the front burner when President Buhari goes on to Doha on Saturday for talks on Sunday with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani,” he said.

Adding that: The President is also scheduled to meet with leading Saudi and Qatari businessmen in Riyadh and Doha, and invite them to support his administration’s efforts to revamp the Nigerian economy by taking advantage of the great investment opportunities currently available in Nigeria’s mining, agriculture, power supply, infrastructure, transportation, communications and other sectors.”

President Buhari is also expected to hold meetings with heads of international financial organisations and multilateral associations during his visit to Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to devalue the Nigerian naira on the grounds that the currency has already been devalued owing to the gap between the official rate of N199 and open market rate of over N400 to one dollar.

Fayose in a release issued in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, February 21, also decried that there was no time in the history of Nigeria that the gap between dollar official rate and open market rate was more than N200.

Militants declare war on FG over detention Nnamdi Kanu

Two militant groups in the Niger Delta region have issued separate statements declaring war on the federal government for its continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Militants have declared war on the federal government for its refusal to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The groups, Concerned Militant Leaders (CML) and Niger Delta People’s Democratic Front (NDPDF) yesterday, February 20, in port Harcourt, Rivers state declared their readiness to battle the federal government and cripple the economy of the country if Kanu is not released.

According to Sun, the leaders of the two groups, General Ben (CML) and Precious Iyoyo (aka General playboy) angered by reports that there were plans by the federal government to use witnesses in mask to testify against Nnamdi kanu in court warned that they were ready to draw the battle line against President Muhammadu Buhari-led government for its determination to cause problem in the country, particularly in the south-south and south-east zones, by stubbornly refusing to release Kanu.

General Ben noted that the 31 day-ultimatum given to the federal government to release the IPOB leader expires tomorrow, Monday, February 22, noting that failure to comply with the deadline would results in attacks on targets in Abia and Anambra states, as well as Abuja.

He said: “We are ready for Federal Government, which said we would be treated as criminals and saboteurs. The 31-day ultimatum will expire on Monday. We are ready and will attack them in Abia, Anambra and Abuja, where they shed the blood of Biafran brothers and sisters.

“We are not going to attack the civilians per se; but we are going to attack the presence of the Federal Government in the areas. If President Buhari could not clear Boko Haram in six months, as he told Nigerians, why didn’t he focus attention on the North? Why did he waste the blood of Biafrans people?”

“We are in solidarity with the Biafran struggle and there is no going back. We are taking our revenge. We are not going to spare them. We don’t believe in much talk. Enough is enough,” he said.

On his part, General Playboy warned that any attempt to use masked witnesses to testify against Kanu will be met with serious consequences.
“If they (UN) don’t intervene in this matter, and Nigerian government goes ahead to execute its plans to annihilate Biafrans, we will cripple the economy of this country. All eyes are on government not only Kanu but on Tompolo too. The government is treading on very rough and dangerous path,” he threatened.

Meanwhile, a lawmaker representing Onitsha North constituency in Anambra state House of Assembly, Hon. Chugbo Enwezor, is instigating bereaved families of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) that were killed by Nigerian security operatives during protests in some states.

According to a post published on Euphemia Udanoh on February 18, Enwezor, who is the chairman of the house committee on judiciary and legal matters, said the leadership of IPOB has the legal rights to sue the Federal Government for murder and claim damages.

Make a daily commitment to spreading God’s mercy, Pope Francis says

On Saturday Pope Francis held his second Saturday general audience of the Jubilee, encouraging pilgrims to make a daily commitment to spreading God’s mercy both in the small things, and to those most in need.

“My life, my attitude, my way of living, must truly be a concrete sign that God is close to us,” the Pope said Feb. 20.

He explained that this is done through “small gestures of love, tenderness and care” which show that “the Lord is with us, that he's close to us. And this is how the door of mercy opens.”
Pope Francis spoke to pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for his second Saturday general audience for the Holy Year of Mercy.

In addition to his weekly Wednesday general audiences, the Pope chose to hold an extra audience once a month on a Saturday as a special initiative for the Jubilee. In his address, Francis continued his reflections on the topic of mercy as understood through scripture, this week focusing on God’s commitment to humanity in sending Jesus.

He said that committing oneself to something means to “assume a responsibility, a task toward someone; and it also means the style, the attitude of fidelity and dedication, of special attention with which we carry forward this task.”

Each day we are asked to commit ourselves in the simple things we do, such as prayer, work and study, as well as in sports or free time, he said. “To commit ourselves, then, means to put our good will and our efforts to improve life,” Francis said, noting that God is also committed to us.

God’s first commitment to humanity was when he created the world and dedicated himself to keeping it alive “despite our efforts to ruin it – and there are many.” But God’s greatest commitment, he said, was when he gave us Jesus.

“Jesus is truly the extreme commitment that God has made toward us…this is the greatest commitment of God,” he said, adding that along with Jesus, “the Father will give us everything we need.”

Seeing this commitment in action is easy if we read the Gospel, which tells us how through Jesus, God totally committed himself to restoring hope to the poor and those deprived of their dignity, as well as to strangers, the sick, prisoners and sinners, he said.

“In all of this, Jesus was a living expression of the mercy of the Father,” the Pope continued. In off-the-cuff remarks, he underlined Jesus’ merciful attitude in his unconditional welcome of sinners with goodness.

When seen in a human way, the sinner seems like God’s enemy, he said, but noted that despite this, Jesus still “drew close to them with goodness, he loved them and he changed their hearts.”

All of us are sinners who have some sort of guilt before God, Francis said, yet the Lord still chooses to be near us in order to give us comfort, love and mercy.

“This is the commitment of God! And because of this he sent Jesus!” he said. “To draw close to us, to all of us, and to open to us the door of his love, his heart, his mercy. And this is very beautiful, very beautiful!”

Pope Francis concluded saying that in response to God’s commitment to us, we in turn must commit ourselves to spreading his love, mercy and goodness, beginning with those most in need.

He pointed to those who suffer due to abandonment, illness, a serious disability as well as those who are dying or who cannot express their gratitude.

“In all of these realities we bring the mercy of God through a life commitment, which is the testimony of our faith in Christ,” he said, and told pilgrims to always bring God’s caress to others, “because God has caressed us like this with his mercy.”
“Bring it to others, to those in need, to those who suffer in their hearts, or who are sad. Draw near to them with that caress of God, which is the same that he had with us,” he said.

He closed by praying that the Jubilee would help to open our minds and hearts so that we can “touch with our hands” the commitment God has for each person, and that our lives would be transformed “into a commitment of mercy for all.”
