NYSC DG Canvasses Favourable Environment for Corps Entrepreneurs

Towards making extra efforts to reduce unemployment and enhance job creation in the country, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier-General Johnson Bamidele Olawumi has admonished all serving Corps Members to come up with viable business ideas and become job creators.

Olawumi gave this charge at the official launch of the Youth Innovative Entrepreneurship Development Programme (YIEDP), a tripartite agreement between the CBN, NYSC and Heritage Bank, held in Abuja.

He said there was the need to boost job creation among Corps Members and encourage exportation of Nigerian made products adding that the NYSC Scheme has trained over five hundred thousand Corps Members in Agro-Allied based skills through SAED programme.

He disclosed that Corps Members would enjoy unhindered access to funds as he enjoined Nigerians to patronize Corps entrepreneurs stating that training, financial empowerment and conducive environment are the necessary prerequisites for business growth.

The YIEDP was designed to complement the NYSC-SAED programme.

While launching the programme, the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said the programme is targeting 10,000 Youths for its pilot case with consideration for ex-corps members with not more than five years post service experience.

He added that the sum of three million naira is available for each beneficiary with 9% interest rate while repayment of the loan would be based on the gestation of such project but added that the collateral is the certificate of National service and the original certificate from the Institution of graduation attended by the loan beneficiary.

Emefiele, who said there are many youths with bright ideas but lack the financial wherewithal to start up added that the CBN would make funds available to support Corps entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
The website to access for the YIEDP is www.yiedp-hbng.com

The Deputy Governor, Economic Policy, Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr (Mrs) Sarah Alade, said about seventy percent of the total population of the country are Youths, hence, the need to introduce them to job creation, boost wealth creation and reduce the increasing rate of unemployment among the Youths.

In his remark, the Chairman, Heritage Bank Plc, Mr Akinsola Akinfemiwa stated that the tripartite agreement is aimed at turning Corps Members with creative ideas to job creators.
“We are looking for game-changers that will break ideas and move this nation forward. We are ready to contribute our quota to the development of this country. You must think and work”. he said.

Nigeria inflation hit 11.4 percent in February — Statistics bureau

Nigerians paid about 1.76 percent higher in prices of goods and services in February than what they paid in January this year, the National Bureau of Statistics has said.

The latest Consumer Price Index, CPI, which measures the average rate of inflation in the prices of goods and services over a period, showed that headline inflation grew from 9.6 percent in January to 11.4 per cent during the month.

The National Bureau of Statistics said in its latest report published on Tuesday in Abuja that the new rate for the month of February was higher by 9.6 per cent than the corresponding period in January 2015 (year-on-year basis).

On a month-on-month basis, the headline index increased at a faster pace by 2.3 percent in February, about 1.4 percent points relative to the rates recorded in January.
The report said the speedy rise, which led to the overall increase in the headline index, were recorded across almost all major divisions, except the restaurants and hotels divisions, which, it noted, increased, at a slower pace.

Food prices sub-index increased at faster pace in February by 11.3 per cent, up by 0.71 per cent points from rates recorded in January after increasing at the same pace for two months, the NBS noted.

During the month, the NBS said all major food groups contributed to the food sub-index increasing at a faster pace during the month, except potatoes, yams and other tubers as well as sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery groups.

The “All Items less Farm Produce” or core sub-index, increased at a faster pace in February as imported items as well as other domestic shocks, which resulted in ripple effects across many divisions that contributed to the core inflation index.

The index increased by 11 per cent in February, about 2.2 per cent points from rates in January.

Average index consists of the Core Index and Farm Produce items.
In January, both the urban and rural indices recorded significant increases, with the former rising by 12.3 per cent (year-on-year basis) from 9.7 per cent recorded in December, while the latter increased by 10.7 per cent in February from 9.5 per cent in January.

On a month-on-month basis, both the urban and rural indices increased at a faster pace, with the former increasing by 3.0 per cent in February from 0.9 per cent in January, while the latter index rose by 1.8 per cent from 0.9 per cent in January.

The NBS said the percentage change in the average composite CPI for the 12 months period ending in February 2016 over the average CPI for the corresponding 12 months was 9.4 per cent, higher from 9.1 per cent recorded in January.

The corresponding 12 month year-on-year average percentage change for the urban index, the report said, increased from 9.2 per cent in January to 9.5 per cent in February, while the corresponding rural index also increased from 9.0 per cent in January to 9.2 per cent in February.

UEFA League: Man City reach q’finals for first time

Manchester City reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time despite a lethargic second leg goalless draw against Dynamo Kiev.

City, 3-1 up from the first leg, were in control of the tie but lost both centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi to injury early on.

In a slow-paced first-half, neither side threatened a shot on target.
Jesus Navas hit the post with a low drive in the second half and Yaya Toure struck straight at the goalkeeper.

Manuel Pellegrini – who is to be replaced by Pep Guardiola as boss next season – wants to finish by making City champions of Europe for the first time.

After winning the League Cup last month, the Champions League remains City’s only realistic hope of a second trophy this season, as they lie 12 points behind leaders Leicester in the Premier League, reports the BBC.
Pellegrini has made history by taking City further in the competition than any other manager, but can he go all the way?

Well, they will want to avoid Barcelona in the draw for the next round – should the holders complete the job against Arsenal on Wednesday – having been knocked out by the current Spanish champions in each of the last two seasons.

It was just as well that City had done the damage in the first leg, as this was a desperately poor performance against a Kiev side who have never won in England.

With the match taking an almost testimonial feel for long spells, neither striker Sergio Aguero nor midfielder Toure could exert their influence and missed the opportunity to signal their intent to other teams left in the tournament.

Over 1,000 UTME candidates in Lagos protest against results ‘manipulations’

Worst CBT, far better than PPT, says JAMB

No fewer than a thousand candidates that sat for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Lagos, yesterday stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly Complex, Alausa, to protest alleged manipulations, irregularities and fraud in release of results.

Besides demanding the resignation of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, the candidates also urged the Federal Government to order the conduct of a fresh examination.

The protesters, led by a group under the aegis of Concerned Parents and Education Stakeholders, displayed placards with various inscriptions such as “All we are saying, give us our marks”, “Dibu must go”, “Ojerinde: The only stumbling block in education progress” and “Joint Admission Manipulation Board, the professor of test and management has outlived his usefulness”, among others.

Meanwhile, Head of Media of the board, Fabian Benjamin, in a statement issued yesterday, frowned at the protest, which he alleged was instigated by their partners (the proprietors of JAMB accredited centres).

He said that despite the hiccups that surrounded the conduct of the Computer Based Test (CBT), it still could be compared to Paper Pencil Test (PPT).

He said: “It’s no news that the worst CBT is far better than the best Paper and Pencil Test. At least the era of candidates pouring acid on members of staff, bolting with question papers into the bush and all manners of unthinkable embarrassing acts are gone.

“We will continue to show leadership in the conduct of public examination in Africa and beyond. Again, all candidates with genuine complaints are urged to visit any of our offices nationwide. We are not perfect as an organisation but working hard to ensure that Nigerian education is better than it is.”

Displaying one of the leaflets with Dibu’s picture, National President of Association of Tutorial Schools in Nigeria, Olutodotun Shodunke, lamented that over 10,000 candidates missed the UTME, while others had their marks deducted due to alleged clandestine motive by the Registrar.

Vatican releases papal schedule for World Youth Day in Poland

On Saturday the Vatican released a provisional schedule of Pope Francis' visit to Poland for World Youth Day. He will be in the central European nation July 27-31.

The Pope will arrive at Krakow-Balice airport July 27. He will meet with president Andrzej Duda and the nation's bishops. Later in the day, he will meet with Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of Krakow and greet the crowds from a window used often by St. John Paul II.

On July 28 the Pope is scheduled to visit Czestochowa, the home of the monastery of Jasna Gora, which holds an icon of a Black Madonna, the patroness of Poland. While there he will say Mass for the 1,050th anniversary of the baptism of Poland.

Francis will visit Auschwitz July 29, and later celebrate the Way of the Cross in Krakow. Auschwitz is the site of a Nazi death camp which sits roughly 40 miles from Krakow. At least 1.1 million people died in the camp during its years of operation, 1940-1945.

On July 30 Pope Francis will visit the Divine Mercy Shrine in Krakow, passing through its Holy Door and visiting the nearby chapel where St. Faustina Kowalska is buried. St. Faustina, a 20th century nun, had visions of Christ upon which the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is based.

While there the Pope will say Mass with priests, religious, and seminarians, hear confessions, and lunch with some youth. That evening he will participate in the World Youth Day prayer vigil.

The Pope is to say Mass for World Youth Day on July 31, and later meet with the organizers, volunteers, and benefactors of the event. He will depart for Rome that evening.

St. John Paul II instituted World Youth Day in 1985 to bring together young people to pray and worship and to celebrate their Catholic faith. The events are held every 2-3 years and have drawn crowds of up to 5 million people.

Some 2.5 million are expected to attend the event in Krakow, which will last July 26-31.
