Management of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has explained why it expelled 6 final year students. They were sent home presenting fake or altered National Diploma (ND) and National Certificate of Education (NCE) results for admission, the authorities said.
The expulsion notice is contained in a circular signed by Mrs Taiwo Obadimu, the Deputy Registrar of the college, which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.
According to the circular, the authorities of the institution considered the report on verification of the affected students’ results and found them culpable. “Their expulsion was approved, having found the students guilty for presenting fake/altered ND/NCE results, as their conduct violated the college’s rules and regulations.
“The students are advised to hand over all college property, including student identity cards in their possession, to the heads of their department, the Polytechnic Librarian and the Dean of Students’ Affairs, with immediate effect,’’ the circular stated.

Seven Lassa fever patients declared missing from medical centre in Taraba State

Seven patients with Lassa fever who were admitted at the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo Taraba State have are reportedly missing. The management of the Hospital said they are doing all they can to arrest the patients and return them to the hospital.
The Chairperson, Lassa Fever Committee at the medical centre, Dr Aisha Sani said:
“Seven persons had absconded. We are making frantic efforts to arrest and bring them back to the hospital before they infect others with the disease. We have our internal securities here, but the truth is that we need more to secure the Lassa fever unit,”.
Lassa fever has killed 14 people in the state so far this year.

Lassa Fever - 137 confirmed cases, 80 deaths since outbreak in December 2015

Abdulsalami Nasidi, Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in a recent interview stated that since the break out of Lassa fever in December 2015, 137 cases and 80 deaths have been recorded.

Lassa Fever

Nasidi  told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that efforts have been intensified to tackle virus in the country.
Lassa fever broke out in December 2015 but became worst in February; the total suspected case was 266 and 138 deaths in the whole country.
“Laboratory wise the centre recorded 137 cases and 80 deaths,’’ he said.

Nasidi added that the centre has not received any new case in the past 10 days.

NCDC has not received any new case of Lassa fever in the past 10 days and the one we are suspecting has not been fully confirmed.
"This means that the outbreak has subsided but it can rise again if we do not take precautions.
"Our challenge is the high rate of deaths which is around 60 per cent of those who fall sick due to the disease.
“We need to do more to stop the spread and reduce the number of deaths
,” Nasidi said.
Nasidi noted the case of 13 persons from one family being infected with the virus in Bauchi. He said 10 members of the family survived while three died.

He added that the Centre is focused on fighting all haemorrhagic fevers, including ebola, zika and yellow fever.
We are working very actively on all the haemorrhagic fevers not just Lassa fever.
“We are still monitoring and checking what is happening on Ebola; we are also working actively on flues generally.
“I just returned from Ibadan where we assembled all the NCDC epidemiologists, disease surveillance and education officers and some directors from all over the federation to make them know that time is against us.
“Through the meeting, preparation for the fight against Zika virus and endemic flues has begun,’’ he added.

Congolese president wins third term after 32 years in office, opposition cries foul

Congo president Denis Sassou Nguesso was on Thursday declared the winner of presidential elections, extending his 32 years in power in a vote the opposition says was marked by "massive fraud".

Interior Minister Raymond Zephyrin Mboulou announced the results at 3:30am (0230 GMT) on national television, saying Sassou Nguesso had secured 60 percent of the vote in the tense weekend poll held under an ongoing communications blackout. Sassou Nguesso has ruled Congo for all but five years since 1979, having lived in Paris in exile from 1992 to 1997.

The official count gave runner-up Guy-Brice Parfait Kolelas 15 percent of the vote, while General Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko came in third with 14 percent.
Sassou Nguesso hailed the victory at his campaign headquarters, saying the Congolese people had "taken their destiny into their own hands" and adding that the campaign had produced a "very open" democratic debate in the former French colony.
Both of his main rivals had already rejected the partial results released Wednesday, with Kolelas' spokesman Vivien Manangou saying there had been "massive fraud".
Mokoko, who until February was Sassou Nguesso's security advisor, added: "I knew beforehand that the dice were loaded, but we had agreed to play the game."
He called for a recount, saying: "How do you want us to accept such a result?"
With telephones and the Internet cut off, neither candidate was immediately reachable after the official results were announced.
Oil- and timber-rich Congo has been on edge since an October constitutional referendum that ended a two-term limit on presidential mandates, allowing Sassou Nguesso, a 72-year-old former paratrooper colonel, to run for office again.
Critics accuse him of rampant corruption and nepotism, blasting the referendum result as a "constitutional coup".
Authorities imposed a communications blackout during the election to prevent opposition candidates from publishing "illegal results". A government source said they blackout would remain in place until after the official results.

Most shops in the south of the capital Brazzaville, an opposition stronghold, had stayed shut on Wednesday amid fears of unrest.
Kolelas' spokesman Manangou said security forces had stormed the candidate's campaign offices on Tuesday, hurling tear gas cannisters and causing a stampede that left one person dead.
A French journalist was present but was unable to confirm the death.
Mokoko and Kolelas, along with the three other opposition candidates, have urged people to "exercise their sovereignty" in the event of a Sassou Nguesso victory.
They created their own parallel "technical commission" to monitor the vote and compile information from polling stations to compare it to the official results.
They said they could say "with certainty" that the opposition had beat Sassou Nguesso in the first round and that a second-round election should be held.
The European Union refused to send election observers to monitor the polls, saying conditions had not been met for a transparent and democratic vote.
The international community has since expressed concern over the fairness of the vote and called for the opposing sides to resolve their differences calmly.
"This vote took place in a worrying context, particularly due to the cut in communications," said France's foreign ministry spokesman Romain Nadal.
