What Is Easter?

What Is Easter? - Gansovsky Vladislav / E+ / Getty Images
On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ. It is typically the most well-attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches.
Christians believe, according to Scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross. As part of the Easter season, the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. Through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.

When Is Easter Season?

Lent is a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter. In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent and the Easter season.

Easter Sunday marks the end of Lent and the Easter season.
Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent or Great Lent, during the 6 weeks or 40 days preceding Palm Sunday with fasting continuing during the Holy Week of Easter. Lent for Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday and Ash Wednesday is not observed.
Because of Easter's pagan origins, and also because of the commercialization of Easter, many Christian churches choose to refer to the Easter holiday as Resurrection Day.

Easter in the Bible

The biblical account of Jesus' death on the cross, or crucifixion, his burial and his resurrection, or raising from the dead, can be found in the following passages of Scripture: Matthew 27:27-28:8; Mark 15:16-16:19; Luke 23:26-24:35; and John 19:16-20:30.
The word "Easter" does not appear in the Bible and no early church celebrations of Christ's resurrection are mentioned in Scripture. Easter, like Christmas, is a tradition that developed later in church history.

Determining the Date of Easter

In Western Christianity, Easter Sunday can fall anywhere between March 22 and April 25. Easter is a movable feast, always celebrated on the Sunday immediately following the Paschal Full Moon. I had previously, and somewhat erroneously stated, "Easter is always celebrated on the Sunday immediately following the first full moon after the vernal (spring) equinox." This statement was true prior to 325 AD; however, over the course of history (beginning in 325 AD with the Council of Nicea), the Western Church decided to established a more standardized system for determining the date of Easter.
There are, in fact, as many misunderstandings about the calculation of Easter dates, as there are reasons for confusion.

Key Bible Verses About Easter

Matthew 12:40
For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (ESV)

1 Corinthians 15:3–8
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. President Buhari Urges Nigerians To Love One Another

Muhammadu-Buhari-on-north-east-Starvation

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians to love one another and be disciples and flowers of Jesus Christ, just as He (Jesus) did during his ministry on earth.
President Buhari made this known in his Easter message to Nigerians. The statement says, “As we celebrate Easter this year, I sincerely believe that it will serve our dear nation very well if we all imbibe this essential message of Jesus Christ and truly learn to love our countrymen and women as we love ourselves.
Indeed, we will surely make faster progress towards the achievement of the peaceful, united, strong, progressive and prosperous country we all desire if, as a nation, we eschew all divisive, parochial, ethnic and religious sentiments and rivalries, and begin to live more harmoniously with our compatriots, as Jesus Christ and the founders of the world’s other great religions enjoined mankind.
Our unfortunate notoriety in recent years as a country where the blood of men, women and children are wantonly and callously shed in frequent orgies of criminal, political, ethnic and religious violence has become very embarrassing and utterly unacceptable.
My administration is determined to achieve greater peace and security across our nation by ending the avoidable conflicts and crises that hinder our national progress.
I ask for greater support from all Nigerians in this regard. We must put a stop to politically motivated killings. Our communities must be made safe again for all inhabitants to live together in peace and harmony”.
He further noted that “Our armed forces, police and other security agencies are being progressively reformed, re-positioned and empowered to win the war against terrorism and make mass killings, abductions and other criminal atrocities things of the past in our beloved country.
Let us all also play our parts as patriotic citizens and do all that we can to ensure that we make Nigeria a safer, more peaceful and happier place for its people and others.
Faith, belief and the fulfillment of expectations are also key themes of the Easter celebration. I urge you all therefore, to continue to have faith in the future greatness of our country and to believe that the CHANGE my administration promised will surely come to fruition.
That CHANGE, which we all yearn for, will certainly occur more rapidly if we all place the love of our country above selfish personal and group interests”.
President Buhari stated that the National Assembly has just passed the 2016 budget.
“I assure all Nigerians that we will do our utmost best to ensure that the budget, the first since my election as President, is efficiently and successfully implemented towards achieving our objective of faster economic growth and development.
“I thank the vast majority of Nigerians for their patience and understanding in the first ten months of this administration.
As we go forward, I assure you all that we are working very hard to overcome the challenges we encountered on assumption of office.
We are moving on with an unshaken resolve and determination to deliver on the mandate you gave us on March 28, last year”.
I wish you all very happy Easter celebrations.

EPISODE ONE
EDUCATION

The place of education in any given society establishes the period in time the said people belong to. We all live in the same planet earth but not in the same period.

Most Nations still live in the 20th century while others, fortunately, have found themselves in the 21st century. This occurrence is not determined by the extent to which they are blessed with human and natural resources, but their level of Education/Enlightenment and how well they’ve been able to apply the knowledge acquired over time, to the development of their society, community, and Country.

It is an aberration to the development of a people for their government to relegate to the background, the relevance of Education. If Education has brought a glimmer of light to most continent, country and her people, then, it should be the basis for any country that so desire greater height amongst her people. Civilisation was said to have begun at the shores of Africa – Egypt. It is saddening enough to note that no African countries falls under the confines of the 21st century. Reasons for this tragic position are obviously traced to the lackadaisical manner with which governments at different times have undermined education. This was bore out of greed and a severe need to sustain the level of ignorance among the people so they don’t rise up against the powers that be. The fear that the people would someday question their policy, greed, misappropriation of public funds, etc was enough reason to kill and take education away from the people, destroying not only their future, but the country's place in the global picture.

My. President, to justify the level of attention education is given in Africa is to justify its position with recent evaluation and the place of Africa’s Tertiary Institutions in world’s ratings. It is tragic enough to note that no African university falls within the range of the world’s top 30 Universities. If this is a true mirror of Africa’s position in the World today, then the future of the African continent is a threat to itself.

Mr. President, at this juncture, we shall simply narrow our minds to our country of interest, Nigeria – the "giant" of Africa. We were, and will always be irrespective of the challenges that befall our great Nation, courtesy of our people and past leaders. Nigeria’s commitment to Education is largely depicted by the alarming rate of illiteracy in the country. Nigeria is a great nation, richly blessed and endowed, but our respective managers over the years have not been able to justify the essence of these resources to our country Nigeria. They have not been able to reflect the blessings of these resources. Instead, the people suffer as though they lived in a barren land.

Our universities are but a reflection of our respective leaders, while our graduates, a reflection of what the future holds. I do not wish to resuscitate the level of decadence and the atrocities committed over the years under the auspices of educational development. We shall for the sake of “National peace and development” stick to the vision this book holds for our great Nation Nigeria. But one thing is sure - for education to grow, a revolution would be a prerequisite.

My. President, an average Nigerian does not possess what it takes to acquire basic education. The level of starvation in our society kills the very zeal, and passion to acquire education. Parents strive to survive. Children, having felt the impact of suffering, feel a mandate to bail the family out of its poor state hence, education, not an option. In most developed countries today, education has been made compulsory and free from childhood to 18 years, or to a certain level they consider a dose for anyone to contribute positively and immensely to his or her immediate society. This is not because these countries do not have other areas that require development, but they realise the uncompromising essence of education. The above policy is to encourage the child, empower the child, protect the future of the child as well as protect the future of the country against darkness and internal threat. Above all, discourage parents from using their ward as an economic tool to empower the family as prevalent in Nigeria and other African countries where children are meant to hawk in order to sustain the daily survival of the family. Most annoying, these parents simply sit at home and make more babies.

My Dear President MB, amongst every ten (10) Nigerians, there is a common story from eight (8) of them on how they personally paid their way to-and-out of school. This is born out of the strong desire to acquire knowledge, a desire not friendly found especially with the economic hardship in the country. If an individual pays his/her way through school which is really the case in our schools, the question is; how much of his/her time has he/she got to devote to studies and lectures? And how much time is taken by the full or part-time job that provides the income which directly pays the bills? With the above situation, concentration and commitment to one’s study becomes a mirage, but Nigerians still scale through these hardship. Great people!

Education policies are made, bills passed all in the name of resuscitating our education and adding value to our graduates, no doubts, all efforts seem to have betrayed the very expectations of the Nigerian people. The very sound of another proposed policy ache the ear of an average Nigerian, knowing fully well it’s just another means by another brother to rob the Nation.

It is saddening enough to note that our political leaders realise the decadence of our education system.  Hence, the abrupt shoving-off of their wards to schools outside the shores and borders of our dearly beloved country. MY. PRESIDENT, if our education system was rated the best or among the very best, would you or the wards of our political leaders abandon our finest standard of education for anything lesser? Hell no! Our education system is left the way it is simply because our leaders are not patrons of the system. They send their wards to acquire the best education outside the country so they would be duly empowered, return to take over from where their fathers left-off politically.  Nigerians have come to realise that depriving them of the proper benefit of education is also an attempt to prevent them from rubbing shoulders with our leader’s wards in terms of credentials and the quality of education obtained by their wards. This is not a patriotic spirit neither does it project or propel a bright future for our dear country.

My President, the poor state of our primary, secondary and tertiary institutions is a far cry from what a decent education system should be. The incessant strikes by ASUU, primary school teachers, secondary school teachers, elongated 3 years program to 5-7 years before horsemanship in the case of medicine and the NYSC scheme, no doubt your colleague(s) who ventured into business would have been well represented in the society. All these frustrated years do not in any way spell or guarantee good job or success upon successful completion of the said program hence; the relegation of education to a useless state. The cry of parents on National TV and Radio does not impact enough to excite the ears of our political leaders.

A PATH TO AN END
PATRIOTISM
My President, Nigerians and civil servants by all means must or should be a “patriot” willing to serve and sacrifice whatever it takes to uphold the interest and values of our dear country. A patriot must believe in his/her country, must believe not only the present status of his/her country, but the future of the country. Drastic and immediate measures will be recorded if our political leaders have their wards at home on a regular basis like every average and common Nigerian, but this is not the case. The need for patriotism as a prerequisite for all civil servants and political leaders irrespective of their portfolio is crucial to developing our education. If we believe in our country, then we must believe in whatever is obtainable in the country, for a man who believes in his prowess does not falter in expressing it before the general public. If as a prospective leader or leader of this great Nation, your wards school abroad, how then do you justify your love for this country and what is presently obtainable herein?

Our dear President, the constitution should be reviewed to accommodate these positions that will take us to a positive end in our education sector:
  • All civil servants including the PRESIDENT must have their wards “school” here in Nigeria and in our PUBLIC SCHOOLS. This is to obtain a reasonable interest from the office of the President, Governors, Ministers, Judiciary and other members of the executive. If the President and members of the National assembly, Minister as well as the governors have their wards in our schools, it will generate a direct supervision of our education system by our leaders through their wards.
  • Nigeria as a country should embrace global position/practices in terms of funding education, providing groundwork and ensuring we produce quality and resourceful graduates.
Incessant strikes by educational bodies would also mean that our leaders' wards would grace their homes; this of course would instigate relevant questions by their wards to their parents who are at the helm of affairs in the country. We do not have access to our leaders, but their wards would most definitely relate the minds of the people to their parents. This again, will break the monster between our political leaders and their subjects in the education sector.

In order to create a befitting learning environment, and quality education for our children, subsequent Government would be left with no choice than to invest appropriately to enhance the standard of education in the country which becomes beneficial not only to their wards, but to all Nigerians.

President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, let us all eat from the same pot based on equal right to education and allow individual assimilation to spell a natural difference and status amongst us.

I fear the case of insecurity for the wards of our political leaders would be cited as a barrier hence; this position.
  • Insecurity cannot be completely erased from any society, but can be managed; insecurity shall be addressed in subsequent episode. Presently, the wards of our political leaders who study in America, Britain etc still enjoy some sought of security benefit, so it shouldn’t be a barrier to their children schooling here in Nigeria as such adequate security will be provided.
  • There must be leverage if excess is to be tamed; the fact that their wards could be in any form of danger based on their actions would naturally conscientise our political leaders to desist from corrupt practices, and further promote positive actions, decision, policies and governance that will not provoke public anger.

CONCLUSION
My President, building standards in our education sector to an appreciable status will definitely be a collective responsibility; a system where everyone shares the same and equal right to education. System where people are encourage to acquire knowledge for the well-being of not only themselves but also for the future of their country.

Our political leaders should not feel slighted by the notion that their wards must attend government owned schools, rather, they  should embrace patriotism, a patriotic spirit which connotes you strongly believe in the education system of your country. A spirit which drives your very soul towards positive development in every aspect of our education system, a spirit not beclouded by sentiments, greed, and personal interests but of sincerity and a sense of equality.

Thank you General Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. God Bless Nigeria!

“To abandon Saraki is to abandon a worthy comrade” – APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary

Saraki Accused BoxThe Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Timi Frank has said in a statement issued in Abuja that the unending trial of Senate President, Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT is tantamount to repaying a good man with evil.
Frank described as worrisome, the negligence of the ruling party in the trial of the country’s number three man over the assets he declared 13 years ago as the Governor of Kwara State.
He said:
I sincerely hold that the current trial of Saraki is not only underserved, but amounts to paying a good man with evil. I also want to say that the leaders of our great party have unfortunately remained quiet in the face of evil.
I don’t believe we have forgotten that the victory of the APC during the last general elections could not have been possible without courageous strategists like Saraki who lent their political weight in favour of the APC at the risk of their own lives and personal survival. I don’t think we have forgotten how Saraki as a Senator in the 7th Senate brought the attention of Nigerians to the fraud perpetrated by the last administration in the name of fuel subsidy.
I don’t think we have forgotten so soon how Saraki led five other governors of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) into the APC – a development that successfully turned the political tide against the PDP and eventually tipped the electoral scale against them during the 2015 general elections. I don’t think we have forgotten how Saraki led scores of Senators to cross over to the APC on the floor of the Senate. I don’t think we have also forgotten what he gave of his time, personal resources and energy to ensure that the APC emerged victorious both at the National, State and Local Government level.
“The question is: Why is the case of Saraki being treated differently at the CCT that in 2011 struck out the case against one of our national leaders because he was not given the opportunity to deny or admit the alleged discrepancies in his asset declaration forms in line with Section 3(d) of the CCB/CCT Act unlike 11 other ex-governors who had similar cases of irregularities whose cases were dropped by the CCB after they were invited by the agency.
Or where else in the world will the number three citizen of a country be hulled before a tribunal over alleged irregularities in his asset declaration forms 13 years ago, and the hierarchy of the ruling party to which he is a bonafide member will not come out to show solidarity or defend him? If it is true that the trial of the Senate President is not borne out of genuine desire to fight corruption but is being carried out for selfish political ends, then who is next?
He concluded with this:
Even the holy scriptures admonish us not to muzzle the ox that threshes the corn. Saraki has paid his dues at a time it was suicidal for anybody to stand up against the then ruling PDP. I believe it is time for all of us to act to save our party. It is time to rally round our generals who have fought valiantly and led us to victory. To abandon Saraki is to abandon a worthy comrade.

Adele Is Getting Set To Take a Five-Year Break from Music

adele-portrait-03
Even though she only just returned to the spotlight in November with the release of her latest album 25, it appears Adele may already be planning her next break, intending to take a five-year hiatus from the music industry in order to focus on her three-year-old son with boyfriend Simon Konecki.
A source revealed to The Sun: ‘She has told her closest pals she will step away from the limelight for five years before she next brings out an album. She’s still very new to motherhood and doesn’t want to miss out on Angelo growing up. It will be a hard thing for fans to hear.’
Adele’s current tour is expected to conclude in November of this year after which Adele plans to focus on her family instead of her career.

Emeka Ike opens up on being the new AGN President & Ibinabo Fiberesima’s Jail Sentence

mments
Emeka-and-Ibinabo
In an interview with Punch Newspaper’s Saturday Beats, Nollywood actor Emeka Ike is opening up about a lot of things including Ibinabo Fiberesima’s jail term, being the new AGN President and more.
According to the interviewer, Emeka Ike said that he has always told people the AGN seat wasn’t fit for Ibinabo because she had a criminal case in court, but people wouldn’t listen to him.
See his words below.
On being appointed the new AGN President: “My victory at the court has nothing to do with Ibinabo’s predicament. This case is different and if Ibinabo is going to go to jail for my own case, they should come and beg me. Instead of them to come and beg me, they are still going to the press to say all sorts of rubbish about me. There is still a second jail term for Ibinabo. It is called contempt of court and it would also include Segun Arinze. People have threatened to kill me but I am not scared of them. I am waiting for them and I would look them in the face and tell them that they are evil and I am righteous. I did not take the issue to the police but straight to the court and I am happy that justice has been served. Anyone that ties Ibinabo’s plight to my victory is only trying to blackmail me and I know they would not stop blackmailing me. How can anyone say that I sent Ibinabo to jail? Am I the Giwa family or the government?
On Ibinabo’s jail term: How can I be happy that Ibinabo has been sentenced to jail? I feel very bad. The people saying that I am happy about the sentence are actually Ibinabo’s enemies. This is a lady that was used because of the powers she could garner and control. Some people were using her and now that they have messed her up, they are still using her in prison. Ibinabo would never say that Emeka Ike sent her to jail, it is impossible because she knows why she is there. What I was only telling Nigerians is that people of Ibinabo’s status do not contest for any public office. Should we stop telling the truth? She had a criminal issue in court. Let’s leave sentiments, we have to be realistic. I cannot be happy about her predicament because it is rather unfortunate that she is surrounded by the wrong people and advisers; she was surrounded by sycophants. Instead of them to tell her how to solve her problem, they were pushing her to jail and now that she is in jail, they will not leave her alone. Why did they not advise her to form a team and go to Giwa’s family house and roll on the floor for forgiveness? They could have sent her away for days but they would not send her away forever. We are a cultural people, I am sure that after going repeatedly, an elder in the family would plead on her behalf and say something like, ‘our son is dead and nothing can bring him back, let us just forgive her.’ She should have been very remorseful but she wasn’t. We told Nigerians that some of us would not agree but they began to call us names because we took the matter to court.

27 States Struggle To Pay Worker Salaries, According To Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari announced that 27 states in Nigeria are having difficulties paying their workers’ salaries due to the country's economic woes.

He made the remark while speaking at the second National Executive Committee meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Thursday.
“On the economy, the fall of oil prices after Nigeria made itself a mono economy is a disaster. I wonder why people could not believe that in Nigeria, about 27 out of the 36 states have difficulties in paying basic salaries of their workers,” the president stated.
Mr. Buhari added that Nigeria has failed to protect its economy from the volatility of the oil market.
“If from 1999 to at least 2003, oil was above $100 a barrel and an export of about two million barrels per day, how come Nigeria failed to make some arrangements to cushion the effect of a probably volatile oil market?”
Mr. Buhari cited over dependence on oil, mismanagement of public funds, and corruption as the main sources of Nigeria’s economic troubles.
One of the president's plans to improve the economy is to reform the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in order to keep better track of the country’s oil.
“We have tried to make sure that NNPC is reorganized, so that we know how much of our crude is taken, how much of it is sold, and to which account the money is going,” he said.
The president appealed to members of the APC to bear with the administration, assuring them that it is doing everything in its power to generate economic development.

7 Division Garrison Guns Down Suicide Bomber

The ever alert and vigilant troops of 7 Division Garrison based in Maiduguri, in conjunction with Civilian JTF averted yet another suicide attack on the innocent citizens in Borno State today.

The troops intercepted 2 female suicide bombers at about 1.20am this morning, almost 100 metres south of Umurari village, outskirts of Maiduguri.
However, one of the suicide bombers on sighting own troops detonated her explosive device, killing herself instantly, while the second bomber in an attempt to escape was gunned down by one of the Garrison snipers.

The combined team of Nigeria Police and Nigerian Army’s Explosive Ordinance Device team safely detonated the unexploded Improvised Explosive Devices strapped on the gunned down suicide bomber.
It is important to state that there was no casualty beyond the two suicide bombers. Presently, the troops and the Civilian JTF deployed in the village are now combing the general area to forestall further breach of security.
The situation in the area is calm and law abiding citizens are going about their normal activities without fear.
You please requested to disseminate this information to the public through your medium.

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit removed the corpses to the Lagos Mainland Hospital mortuary. Our correspondent reported that the police visited the scene of the deaths.
A Lagos State official, Michael Akindele, assured that proper investigation would be conducted to ascertain what led to the incident. He urged contractors to always use the right equipment and also to adhere to safety precautions while carrying out underground cleaning and other duties.

Exposed: Stella Oduah's Fraud At Enugu International Airport

The stench of contractual fraud left behind by Senator Stella Oduah during her tenure as Minister of Aviation remains unceasing. Oduah, whose time as a minister under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan was headlined by the dodgy contract of two bullet-proof BMW cars for her use, was elected senator in the last general elections.
The latest installment of controversy of her legacy as a minister is coming from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, which was closed down for over two years to allow for its upgrade into a real international airport. To this end, a  contract was awarded at the cost of N86billion.‎
The airport runway, built in the 70s,  stretches over a distance of 2.6km ‎, which was to be extended to 3.6km to meet the global international runway standards. The old 2.6km runway was pot-hole ridden, making it risky for landing.
Palliative measures were occasionally carried out on the runway at night to arrest further deterioration of the runway, but they did not eliminate the risk.
The contractor’s brief was to scrape off the original  2.6km runway that and construct an entirely new one. However,  what was done the dressing of its surface and the addition of a new one-kilometer stretch to make it 3.6km. But even the new one was shoddily built, making it unable to meet the standard specifications for runway construction.
Sources revealed to this medium that no soil analysis was conducted before construction.  ‎This has been blamed for the regular flooding when the rains come.
Being the only one runway at the airport, not more than one plane can land or take off at the same time. The runway, as it is,  cannot accommodate bigger planes like Boeing 747 and 777, a situation that makes the airport less than a lucrative destination for airlines. The airport is made more unappealing regarding profit by the absence of cargo warehouse facilities.
And currently, despite the vast amounts expended, ‎there is no perimeter fencing around the runway. A case of a loiterer blocking a plane from taking off was reported late last year.
Also, ‎the airport does not have instrument landing systems, ILS
It has an improvised solar lighting on the runway; the airport authorities said works for between two to three hours daily. Ideally, it should work all day.‎ Similarly unavailable are CCTV cameras. The shuttle bus service for passengers has been discontinued by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAAN). As a result, passengers are left to trek to the aircraft even when it is raining.
The decrepit situation at the airport has led to the decision of Lufthansa and Emirates airlines to defer the commencement of their o‎pe rations on that route.‎ Moreover, the runway represents a clear and present danger to flight safety.
