The critical areas where further support is needed are food, non-food items (including basic household needs), shelter, WASH, education, nutrition, protection, health and sexual reproductive health, and psycho-social helps.
The U.S. Ambassador to the UN , Samantha Power, who led a high level delegation from US to the Malkohi IDPs camp and host communities told them that they were there to determine what more could be done to defeat Boko Haram so that they can return back to their communities.

Saraki Might Win CCT Case Against Him - Report

This is an independent report written by a Lagos lawyer. Read below...

At the ongoing cross-examination of the star witness in the trial of Senator Bukola Saraki, Mr. Michael Wetkas, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has admitted, based on questions from Saraki’s counsel, that the EFCC did not investigate the accuracy of some of the exhibits presented as proof in the trial of the Senate President.
Saraki’s defense team, led by a former Attorney-General of the Federal, Mr. Kanu Agabi, have poked several holes in the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) case against the Senate President in their thorough scrutiny of Mr. Wetkas’ testimony.
For example, Mr. Wetkas has acknowledged that neither he nor his team investigated Exhibits 11, 12 and 13 of the charges leveled against the Senate President. An online news portal, The Nation, owned by Mr Tinubu, the Southwest leader of APC that Saraki fingered as being behind his ordeal, reported that Mr. Wetkas said the petitions pertaining to the three exhibits were not investigated by him.
Exhibit 11, which was dated May 22nd, 2012, contained a petition written by the Kwara Freedom Network inviting the EFCC to investigate the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board.
The witness, while giving evidence in chief, told the tribunal that the petition by the Kwara Freedom Network triggered the investigation.
“Exhibit 12 was dated on May 7, 2011 but was addressed to the Chairman of the EFCC asking the anti-graft agency to investigate the Kwara State Government on borrowings for projects described as phoney. Exhibit 13 was a petition dated June 7, 2012, which dwelt on the mismanagement of local government revenue in Kwara State between 2003 and 2011.”
It was also observed that the EFCC did not interrogate the Accountant General of Kwara State to clarify the allegations levelled against Senator Saraki. The EFFC witness said that interrogating the Accountant General was not part of his investigation, despite the fact that a careful investigation into the petition required such an enquiry.
The EFCC’s witness also stated that his team did not also get any verifiable document to back the petition written against Senator Saraki.
Also under cross-examination, the witness admitted that investigating the assets declared by the defendant did not form part of his schedule of duty. He also admitted that Exhibits 3, 4 and 5, being the asset declaration forms of the defendant, were duly examined and stamped by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) and not the EFCC, his employer. He added that there was nowhere in the petition he investigated where Saraki’s assets declaration was in contention, bringing into question why the the Senate President has been dragged before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, a body that is solely meant to hold public servants accountable on their asset declarations.
As more and more holes are drilled into EFFC’s star witness’ account, if the law is followed, a mistrial might be declared, leaving the Senate President vindicated of the 13-count charge that he has been on trial for.

Boko Haram activities in North East could have been avoided through education- Air Chief

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar has said that the activities of insurgents in the North-East could have been averted if the people the region had received quality education prior to now.

Speaking during his investiture as the Grand Patron of the Ex-Junior Airmen/Air women Association- Air Force Military School, Jos Alumni in Abuja, Abubakar stressed that if people in the area were educated, it would have become difficult to mobilise them for violence.

Abubakar said, “Why we are doing so much in education is because we understand the relationship between illiteracy and insecurity. If you are able to give people what they require in terms of education, chances are that they are not likely to be mobilised for violence.

“That is why the focus is in as much as we are developing the capacity, but it is also impacting positively in our constitutional role, because we believe if you have an educated society some of the things that are happening in the North-east I don’t think will happen at all. The best thing is to give the children the opportunity to live their dreams and become good citizens.

“That is what education is all about, it is about adding value to the society. I am so excited that what the NAF has out in place so many years back is bringing out men and women of integrity, people who are contributing to the society.”

Three killed, 10 vehicles burnt as fire guts NNPC filling station

Three people died Saturday and 10 vehicles burnt as a filling station belonging to the state-owned Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation caught fire in Kaduna.
Witnesses said the fire started around 5:11 p.m and raged for more than three hours.
Some residents of Kinkinau GRA, where the fuel station is located, opposite Ungwan Muazu, on Nnamdi Azikwe Way, said as the inferno raged, they became apprehensive that it might spread to their shops and homes.
Babangida Kinkinau, owner of a nearby shop, said the incident occurred while a fuel tanker was discharging its content.
“One of the compartments of the tanker was leaking fuel while in the process of discharge,” Mr. Kinkinau said. “I rushed to the scene with a bucket to assist as the manager of the fuel station uses rag to block the leakage.
“Unfortunately, the fire was triggered from the fuel that flowed to the main road, which engulfed eight cars and two commercial buses on queue. The tanker and the fuel station got burnt as well as a girl and two men were killed.
“I managed to remove my car from inside the fuel station.”
Firefighters from the Kaduna State Fire Service and that of Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company battled hard to extinguish the fire.
An official of the Kaduna State Fire Service, confirmed the death of the three people.
He however said the remote cause of the fire was not immediately known.

MUST READ: Here is why more than 48% of Nigerian Women Develop Fibroid (New research )

Fibroid, also known as myoma, is a mass of compacted muscle and fibrous tissue that grows on the wall (or sometimes on the outside) of the uterus. It can be as small as a pea or as large as a grapefruit. Fibroids occur in 50 to 80 percent of women. Fibroids usually develop prior to pregnancy, though many women don't know they have one until they have an ultrasound or the fibroid is discovered during a pelvic exam.
For the 10 to 30 percent of pregnant women with fibroids who do end up having complications, the most common is abdominal pain, which occasionally may be accompanied by light vaginal bleeding.

Effects of Fibroids
Your risk of miscarriage and premature delivery does increase slightly if you have fibroids. They occasionally cause the baby to be in an abnormal position for delivery. They can also stall labor, or, if they're located in or near the cervical opening, they may block the baby's passage. All of these problems can increase.

The majority of fibroids do not change their size during pregnancy, but one-third may grow in the first trimester. Although the data are conflicting and most women with fibroids have uneventful pregnancies.

Approximately 10% to 30% of women with uterine fibroids develop complications during pregnancy. If a fibroid or cluster of fibroids is particularly large or is growing on the outside of the uterine wall, it can push the uterus into an abnormal position. It can also put pressure on the bladder or intestine, causing symptoms such as frequent urination, constipation, pelvic pain, or backache. Fibroids may also cause heavy menstrual bleeding.

Fibroids can interfere with fertility, and they occasionally cause complications during pregnancy. For example, if a large fibroid blocks the opening of a woman's uterus, she may have to deliver her baby by c-section.

Possible factors to note about fibroids:

Family history:
Individual family genetics may affect your chances of getting fibroids. If your grandmother, mother, or sister had fibroids, you may too.

Age:
Fibroids generally first occur in women in their 30s. Fibroids often shrink and cause no symptoms in women who have gone through menopause.

Hormone levels:
Fibroid growth seems to depend on estrogen or progesterone or perhaps both. Some studies show that fibroids are more likely to get smaller when estrogen levels go down (as they do after menopause).

Body weight:
Some studies suggest that obesity might play a role in fibroid development. This is particularly important for fat women, who are 1.4 times more likely prone to fibroid.

Childbirth:
Studies have found that women who have delivered a baby are less likely to have fibroids. The risk probably goes down even more for women who have had two or more babies.

Lifestyle:
Some studies have indicated that exercise and a healthy diet may lower the risk of fibroids, while studies have consistently shown that consumption of alcohol raises the risk.

Former WWE wrestler Chyna’s brain donated to science

Former WWE wrestler Chyna-whose real name is Joanie Laurer- who was found dead in her apartment on Wednesday will have her brain donated for scientific research according to her manager, Anthony Anzaldo.

Anzaldo revealed that Laurer had been contacted to join a concussion lawsuit against WWE by other former professional wrestlers but they declined saying they were only interested in pursuing scientific exploration of the effects a career in wrestling and a history of domestic violence has on the brain.
Anzaldo said:

“My hope is that we can do it. I’m in the process of getting the permission to speak on behalf of family to tell the coroner it’s okay to release it.”

We’re not interested in the lawsuit at all,”. “We’re just looking for (the researchers) to give us everything they can get.”
Anzaldo says the research will include Nigerian Doctor-Dr. Bennet Omalu, the pathologist who discovered CTE – Central traumatic encephalopathy. Omalu and his efforts to bring CTE awareness to the NFL were the subject of the Will Smith film Concussion.

Some former pro wrestlers like Mick Foley, Kevin Nash,
John Cena and Jeff Hardy confirmed they will be donating their brains for study, if it will help further concussion research, he would be interested in donating his brain as well.

Photos: Customs warehouse in Ikeja razed by fire

Nigerian customs service warehouse lost billions of naira due to a fire outbreak. The fire started at 11pm on Friday night April 22nd and burnt into the next day April 23rd. According to a source who witnessed part of the incident, the cause of the fire was an electrical issue from a class room located on the top floor of the warehouse for training officers.

The source said it started from a computer that wasn't switched off properly and sank the decking into the warehouse which caused the fire and caused the loss of billions of naira in goods that were seized by customs.
Fire service operators were at the scene but couldn't control the situation due to inadequate water supply.

Fortunately, all gallons of groundnut oil which would have escalated the fire, rice, soap, clothes and some many other items, had previously been moved to IDPs within the last week.

Fani-Kayode Reacts As EFCC Freezes His Bank Account Over N4bn Fraud

The Nation gathered that the slush fund was allegedly withdrawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and shared to 10 other directors, directorates, zonal directors and state directors of the Presidential Campaign Organization of Jonathan.
Reacting to the development, Fani-Kayode on Friday, said he knew nothing about the withdrawal of the cash from the CBN or funding of the campaign by the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki.
He, however, admitted that campaign funds were paid into the account of a company linked with a former Minister of Finance, Mrs. Nenadi Usman, from where it was shared to him and others.
The former Aviation Minister further dared the anti-graft agency to “do their worse” in a statement in Abuja entitled “The Money Transfers and the Truth about the Presidential Campaign Funds.”
He said: “Our funds were given to us by the President who was the leader of our party through the Director of Finance of the PCO and we were not in a position to inquire into the sources of funding of the party’s campaign. Indeed, it was not our responsibility to do so.
“Once I got these clarifications and confirmations, I agreed to receive the funds into my bank account and use them for their stated purpose.
“The transfers were made and I used the funds to carry out all our operations during the course of the presidential campaign.
“It was an aggressive and well-run campaign and we gave our opponents a very hard time indeed. It was also very expensive and we barely had the resources that we really needed, but we did an effective job with the little we were given.
“The whole nation, including our friends and our enemies, can bear witness to that and they saw the excellent quality of our work. Hardly anyone can dispute this, yet some fail to appreciate the fact that such a strong showing costs a lot of money. Media and publicity campaigns cannot be run on goodwill alone. You need cash and plenty of it.
“During the course of the election and after its conclusion, I submitted detailed accounts of our expenses and evidence of our work to the Director of Finance of the PCO for onward transmission to the Director-General of the PCO and ultimately President Jonathan himself about how the money was spent and they were satisfied.
“Given the fact that these were not public funds, the only legal body that can inquire into our expenditure of campaign funds is President Goodluck Jonathan who set up the PCO.”
“I cannot sit by silently as my name is dragged through the mud in this way and I am convicted in the court of public opinion. This has happened to me once before and it took me seven years to clear my name. It will not happen to me again.
“Consequently I am constrained to take this opportunity to state the facts of this matter, set the record straight and await my traducers and accusers to make their next move. It is indeed time to challenge those that are making these allegations and to kill the lie.
“ The fact that my bank account was frozen on the orders of the EFCC two weeks ago without any explanation is proof of the fact that I am being targeted and that those that seek to have their wicked way with me are about to pounce.
“Given this, it is important that all the relevant facts are put before the world before I am subjected to the Dasuki treatment, put away indefinitely and not given the opportunity to defend myself before the public. Meanwhile, in their usual manner, after this is done, the EFCC will then flood the media with all manner of lies about my so-called atrocities which only exist in the figment of their imagination.
“The allegation of fraud and the receipt of public funds from the National Security Adviser’s Office and Central Bank into my bank account are false.
“These allegations are baseless, wicked, shameful and irresponsible. It is not true that any money was paid into my account by or from the National Security Adviser’s Office, the Central Bank of Nigeria or any other government agency or institution last year or at any other time.”
”As the Director of Media and Publicity of the Jonathan Presidential Campaign Organization, I was asked to submit a budget for my Directorate by Chief Tony Anenih, the Presidential Adviser to the Presidential Campaign Organization and Mrs. Nenadi Usman, the Director of Finance.
“My team and I prepared the budget and it was approved.

A summary of the largesse sharing are as follows: Fani-Kayode (N840million); Goodluck Support Group (N320million); Achike Udenwa and Viola Onwuliri (N350million); Nenadi Usman (N140million); and Okey Ezenwa (N100million).
