Pope Francis: You can't love your pet more than your neighbor

People in need deserve more love from us than the animals do, Pope Francis has said.
In off-the-cuff remarks Saturday, he said: “How often do we see people greatly attached to cats, to dogs,” but fail to “help their neighbor, their neighbor who is in need... This will not do.”
The Pope’s catechesis for the Jubilee of Mercy audience discussed the theme of piety and how it shows God’s mercy through compassion for the suffering and afflicted.
“The piety of which we speak is a manifestation of God’s mercy,” the Pope told the rain-soaked crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square.

The pontiff explained that piety, or “pietà” – which in Italian can also be translated as compassion, pity, or mercy – should not “be confused with compassion which we feel for the animals who live with us.”
“It happens, in fact, that at times one feels this sentiment toward animals, and remains indifferent to the suffering of one’s brothers and sisters,” he added.
The May 14 gathering at the Vatican was the latest in a series of special audiences for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, which are being held throughout the year in addition to the weekly general audiences on Wednesdays.

The Jubilee of Mercy is an Extraordinary Holy Year that officially commenced December 8 – the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception – with the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter's Basilica. It will close Nov. 20, 2016 with the Solemnity of Christ the King.
Pope Francis centered Saturday’s catechesis on piety with regard to those “who need love.” Piety is an aspect of mercy, and one of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, he said.

As noted in the English language synthesis of the address, the word piety denotes a sense of “religiosity or devotion,” but it also relates to compassion and mercy.
The concept of piety existed in the Greco-Roman world, the Pope explained in Italian, where it referred to being submissive toward superiors, such as the gods, one's parents, the elderly, etc.
“Today, however, we must be careful not to identify piety with that pietism, fairly widespread, which is only a superficial emotion and which offends the dignity of others,” he said.
The pontiff cited the many instances in the Gospel in which persons who were sick, possessed, in poverty, or otherwise afflicted would call on Jesus to “Have mercy” (“Abbi pietà” in Italian).
“Jesus responded to everyone with his gaze of mercy and the comfort of his presence,” he said.
In asking Jesus for help or mercy, each of these persons demonstrated their faith, referring to him as
“Teacher,” “Son of David,” or Lord, the Pope explained.
“They intuited that in him there was something extraordinary, that could help them leave behind the condition of sadness in which they had found themselves. They perceived in him the love of God himself.”
Jesus, in turn, took pity, and called the suffering and wounded persons “to have faith in him and in his Word.”

The pontiff explained that Jesus “shares the sadness of those he encounters,” while at the same time works in them to “transform them in joy.”
Pope Francis said “we too are called to cultivate” attitudes of compassion when confronted with situations which shake us from “the indifference that prevents us from recognizing the needs of our brothers and sisters,” and free us from the “slavery of material goods.”
He concluded his catechesis by invoking the example of Mary, who “cares for each of her children and for us believers,” and who is “the icon of piety.”

7 absurd things about being a man in Nigeria

If you are a Nigerian who lives in the country, then you would understand that the society places some sort of responsibility on the men. We get to hear people say things like it is not easy to be a man and the sort.

This is because there is an unrealistic expectation the society has as to the way a man should behave and the things he ought to have at a particular period in time. as a matter of face, a Nigerian man’s life is planned out long before he starts to hustle.

If he hustles for too long without having a major break, there is problem. If he does not hustle at all, he is not a man. If he resides to fate, then he is lazy and when a richer man snatches his wife from him, he is considered unfortunate. What then is expected of a man in Nigeria and how best is he supposed to live his life when the public is sentimental about his life style and what he chooses to do at a particular time.

Find below some of the things expected from a man in Nigeria:

1. He should never cry

When he is bereaved, he is expected to hold himself and comport himself. He is not allowed to give in to emotions because it would portray him as being weak. What exactly is he, a robot?

Many people believe it is an abomination for a man to cry and being a man in Nigeria means you have to be strong always even when you are dying within.

2. You are less of a man when you are jobless

If you are a man in Nigeria who is jobless, life could become frustrating. You lose the right to air your opinion because you are tagged a recluse as a result of your joblessness.

Hanging out with your friends will be impossible because you would no longer be considered a part of them. Your license as a man is being revoked until you have what it takes to measure up to the other men in the society.

3. You must provide for your family

It does not matter if your salary is a little above 50k, you are expected to take care of your family with it, your wife must look good in the society; your parents have done their best taking care of you, now it is your turn to take care of them.

And you had better save part of that money too because your friends expect you to chat over a couple of drinks once in a while. All these would happen to you because you are a man.

4. Attending a reunion while being broke is not allowed

As a man in Nigeria, you are not supposed to let your old friends see you as a struggling person in Nigeria, attending reunions mean you have to be on your best behavior and show everyone you have made something out of yourself.

As a man in Nigeria, you are expected to form up to the point where your helper thinks you should be the one helping him.

5. Your wife should never earn more than you

Being a man in Nigeria means you have to kill yourself in order for your family to live. You are a woman’s wrapper if you seek the counsel of your mother and you half of a man when your wife puts food on the table.

Being a man here means your wife’s salary must not be more than yours and you must turn her down any time she wants to help with a bill so you do not lose your title. How sickening!

6. You are not allowed to show signs of defeat

As a man, you are to give everyone the impression that you got things under control even if you do not know where you are. You are supposed to live a false life so as to keep up with the expectations they have of you being a man. You should never accept defeat, it is a sign of weakness on your part.

7. You are to be totally useless in the kitchen
Being a man in this part of the world means your duties do not extend to the kitchen. A woman is meant to look after your needs and do everything for you. You are not expected to know how to do simple chores in the house; if you are able to boil water to a hundred degrees, you have done something extraordinary.

Social media etiquette for Nigerian businessmen

Social media has proven to be an essential tool for numerous businessmen in Nigeria as it is changing the way customers and businesses interact. Some people have even created whole businesses solely over the internet with the help of social media and are very successful.

While most of these businessmen who find themselves in position where they have to network through sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+, do not undergo formal training on how to use the social media, they have come to realize that the way they conduct themselves on the platforms plays a key role in how they and their business if perceived.

Unfortunately, most of these businessmen are still unclear as to the best practices as well as the social media etiquette they need to imbibe to survive in the field. In that regard, Jovago.com, Africa’s No.1 online hotel booking service offers 5 social media etiquette rules to help that Nigerian businessmen navigate social media with grace.

Pick an appropriate screen name

The name that you pick for your handle must be something that represents you and your company well. The screen name serves as you identity and it is the first thing that most people who connect with you relate to. Ensure that whatever you chose send a clear message, is succinct and most importantly, relatable.  Try to avoid using nicknames, abbreviations or slangs not even remotely related to your business.

Ensure you compose and proofread posts, updates or tweets before publishing them

As a businessman, you must understand that your activities on the social media directly reflect on your business. Ensure you check every post for grammar and spelling errors before you post them, also, make sure the information you are sending out is genuine and can be verified. Building trust and authenticity are key when relating with customers or connecting with stakeholder online.

When marketing, use a first name

Yes. You are on the social media for business, and you

want to keep it  all professional, but you need to keep in mind that connecting with people on the social media is very different from booking office appointments or making calls. If your intent is to grab the attention of the customers and actually get them respond back to you, you need to make your connection more personable. Doing your research and using the person’s first name is a good way to start.

Connect with people with whom you have a link

The social media is open and allows most users to connect to anyone who uses the same platform, no matter their class, field or location. As a business man, this may seem like a good opportunity to reach out to as many people as possible, especially people who you may not know, but you feel can take your businesses to greater height or make a good purchase from you.. Please fight the temptation.  Do not approach strangers and ask them to be friends with you just so you can then try to sell them on your products or services. Doing so will ensure that you quickly lose credibility and that is not in any way good for business.

Do not be reactive

If you are determined to have your business succeed on the social media, you need to put a pin on your emotions and find a way to check yourself while communication with others, especially when you are locked in an argument and you see yourself getting sucked in. While it is important to address every issues or complaint relating to your product  or service, be careful the words you use as your words and actions can be saved and dredged up down the line. Also ensure that your responses are rational and constructive so that you do not develop a reputation as a hot head.
