Following the clearance given to the Benue State Governor, Dr Samuel Ortom by the Benue State House of Assembly to loan N10 billion, BENUE.COM.NG sources have revealed that striking unions in Benue State may end their strike actions next week.
These unions include the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), both of Benue State University and the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Benue State University.
The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom met with union leaders a week ago promising to pay at least one months salaries and called on them to return to work.
After that meeting, it was gathered that the unions leaders met with their various members.
The ARD in their congress meeting on Monday, however decided against ending the strike action saying they will only return to work when the state government pays their outstanding wages. This decision is said to be similar to those taken by the other unions but it is believed that payment of one months salaries and a convincing plan to offset outstanding wages will suffice as union members are willing to return to work.
Consequently, Benue State University management yesterday announced that its aptitude test will take place from 11th July 2015, hoping the lecturers will be back to work by then.
You will recall that former governor, Gabriel Suswam handed over a backlog of unpaid salaries worth N12 billion.
