The Nigerian Army will present medals of honour to its
officers and soldiers who are involved in the ongoing counter-insurgency
war in Maiduguri, Borno state.
Leadership reports that Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah, the chief of army staff, announced this during a press briefing on July 1, Wednesday, in Abuja.
Minimah stressed that all officers and soldiers, who have fought against the Boko Haram sect in the north-east for a period of 90 days deserve medals.
Speaking through Maj-Gen. Donald Orji, the chief of civil military affairs, he added that wreaths would be laid at the military cemetery in Maiduguri to the troops who died in the course of the war.
According to Minimah, the decoration will be the highpoint of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) titled: “Equipping the Nigerian Army to enhance operational efficiency in combating threat to national security”. The celebration has been carefully planned to boost the morale of troops in the counter-insurgency war.
“The choice of Maiduguri to host the closing activities of NADCEL 2015 was informed by the need to further raise the morale of our troops in the area of operation by showing solidarity to them as well as to further reassure the people in the north-east part of Nigeria, particularly Borno state, of the renewed determination of the Nigerian Army to end the insurgency in that zone,” he said.
Minimah notedthat wounded soldiers in the NA 7 Division Hospital in Maiduguri would be visited, while Internally Displaced Persons in the state would receive free medical treatment.
It is worth mentioning that the Nigerian Army has recently presented cheques to families of soldiers and officers who died in ongoing operations against Boko Haram terrorists. Major General Adamu Baba Abubakar said that the gesture was the sign of appreciation for their fallen colleagues and the support for their families.
