The Nigerian twitter-sphere is a bag of craziness, with updates ranging from outright brilliant, funny and creative, to downright inane.
It’s amazing what people can do with 140 characters. So do you need attention, feeling bored, need something to spice up your day, or really, really angry at someone, then twitter is your friend.


Just remember that Netizens on twitter are eager and ever ready with witty tweets.
Here are five very simple ways of becoming a twitter trend:


1. Be politically incorrect
Nobody likes to be a victim, but everybody has, at one time or another, taken part in a jest of someone weaker or, supposedly inferior.
It’s all for the fun, right? Recall the Sean Tizzle tweets about Adele’s ‘Hello’? Epic!




2. Accuse someone of something scandalous (preferably your ex or colleague)
Nothing gets people talking (in this case tweeting) like a good scandal. It doesn’t necessary have to be true, maybe a half-truth or half the story.
Twitter Netizens will surely complete it. Just pull a Dammy Krane on anybody. Or simply accuse your ex of something –anything at all, but be sure that it is jaw popping.



3. Affirm a stereotype
Again, it doesn’t matter if the stereotype is true (are stereotypes true anyway?), just tweet it and throw in a hashtag for good measure.
Remember to stay away from: Benin and witches (it’s too usual, boring and old), Calabar girls and big nyash (too trite and almost stale), African mothers and wahala (this is funny all the time, but come on! be creative; come up with something new), Igbo people and money (so true, but come on folks, do better), Yoruba and Owambe (let’s be real here, this is old). Try something new and creative.
Remember, whatever you come up with must be street and mumu-friendly, with a little bit of satire and truism.




4. Be Vic O
The honest truth is that in Nigeria, Vic O is your go to guy for anything internet hit and trending.
How he does it, we don’t know.
But we suspect he has a more than average IQ when it comes to making a fool of himself.
Hence, the best lesson we should all learn from Vic O is: everybody loves people that make a fool of themselves.
Nobody wants to be seen as the village idiot, why not make yourself one? I guarantee you’ll be an instant hit. Just be consistent in the self mockery, one day you’ll be a hit.




5. Throw an e-punch (also known as pulling an Olamide) : I was in my house and trailer came to jam me
I suppose not everybody can be king of the street i.e have a squad of soldiers standing by at Lagos mainland, willing and ready to do their commanders’ bidding.
But we all have one thing: fingers to insult anybody from the presidency to your state governor to that wicked senior in secondary school –after all na you send political holders to come twitter?.
Only rule to Twitter e-punching is that your tweet must be witty, have something catchy (like the legendary “biko leave trash for LAWMA”) and have, at the very least, 0.01% element of truth.
Do all, or any, of the above and I guarantee you that you’ll be a Twitter hit.

MTN Apologises To Subscribers, Regulators For Poor Service

Dominant mobile operator MTN Nigeria said in Lagos on Friday that it is willing to restore relations with the telecoms umpire, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), regardless of the current situation in the industry.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, Ferdinand Moolman, and Corporate Service Executive, Aminat Oyagbola, noted that MTN had utmost confidence in NCC and holds the regulator in high esteem, emphasising that MTN was ready to restore good terms with the regulator.
According to Oyagbola, the approach to reconciliation is to correct any area where the firm had erred in the past.
Said she: “The approach is to take the steps lined up to move the industry forward, correct where we have erred in the past, ensure good business relationships with all stakeholders in the industry. It starts with a show of good faith; speaking the truth. We want to restore and generate more goodwill,” she stated.
The new CEO added that the fine issue was very critical for MTN to resolve, disclosing that the fine is about 95 per cent of their total revenue for a year.
The telecommunications company appealed to affected subscribers in the on-going re-registration of Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards, stressing that the whole process would end well for subscribers, the operator and the industry as a whole.
Moolman said it had become expedient that MTN have a solid database of its subscribers as a basis for the next phase of the telecommunications revolution, especially in the area of broadband provisioning.
Oyagbola continued that a hamonised database was needed to be able to offer world class services, saying “MTN actually brought in new systems, hires about 10,000 contract staff for the re-registration process. We are committed to supporting the government in building a national database”.
She noted that MTN is doing the registration afresh, that it would be done in batches and completed in the next six months.
“We are sorry about the number of times a subscriber had to revisit our outlet. The target is to have an accurate database from our own end and then syncronise it with that of the regulator.
“It is a voluminous exercise. We have placed order for SIM registration equipment from the manufacturers, but they claimed to have run out of stocks because it is not only Nigeria that is registering subscribers. They gave us till March for them to have stocks,” Oyagbola stated.
The CEO lamented the impact of the falling oil prices and fluctuating foreign exchange. He maintained that these challenges are impacting negatively on the ability of the firm to import equipment from abroad.
“It is really disturbing and it has become more difficult to import equipment from abroad. These two issues of falling oil prices and a fluctuating foreign exchange regime are serious issues, but we are confident about Central Bank of Nigeria’s efforts in resolving the matter.”

M-Net entertainment holds ‘The Voice Nigeria’ audition in Abuja

M-Net African Magic, a TV entertainment channel, on Saturday began its Abuja auditioning for its reality television singing show, “The Voice Nigeria”.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that, “The Voice Nigeria” is a reality television singing competition.
The two-day auditioning which began on Jan. 16 at the Bolingo Hotels and Towers Abuja will see the emergence of the best talent voice in the FCT.
Efosa Aiyevbomwom, the Head of Public Relations, M-Net African Magic Entertainment, told NAN that the essence of the audition was to support, promote, and encourage young talents.
“The M-Net and African Magic believe in giving opportunities to young talents in the society and availing them the opportunity to showcase their talents to the whole world.
“It is our responsibility to always support talents in Africa, provide entertainment by Africans as well as giving talented Africans opportunity to shine behind and in front of the camera.
“This is just an extension of one of the things we have been doing over the years which is channelling our investment into the entertainment industry,’’ he said.
Mr. Aiyevbomwom explained that winners would not be selected immediately.
According to him, the audition is to enable them select the best talents, who will eventually make it to the show.
“We will get across to them after the final list has been concluded.
“Auditioning phase is more or less selection phase; in total, once we have the final cut and number, we will announce,’’ he said.
One of the participants, Vincent Anthony, said it was his first time to participate in an audition and that he was targeting to emerge as one of the best.
Another participant, Nissi Phillips said he was happy to attend “The Voice Nigeria” audition.
He said it would be a dream comes through if he was eventually selected.
Mariam Kama, an Economics graduate of University of Abuja, who also participated in the programme, told NAN that she was optimistic of been among the selected ones.
She said: “this is my dream and I know that I will go far.

The auditioning kicked off in different part of the country simultaneously has other model – “The Voice USA,” “The Voice Australia,” “The Voice UK,” “The Voice South Africa, among others.

On the recommendation of the committee established to audit the procurement of arms and equipment in the Armed Forces and Defence sector from 2007 to 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to carry out further investigation into the misconduct established against the following retired and serving officers of the Nigerian Air Force and Nigerian Army:

The breaches identified by the Audit Committee include non-specification of procurement costs, absence of contract agreements, award of contracts beyond authorised thresholds, transfer of public funds for unidentified purposes and general non-adherence to provisions of the Public Procurement Act.

Furthermore, the procurement processes were arbitrarily carried out and generally characterized by irregularities and fraud. In many cases, the procured items failed to meet the purposes they were procured for, especially the counter insurgency efforts in the North East.

​A major procurement activity undertaken by ONSA for NAF  was that concerning the contracts awarded to Societe D’ Equipment Internationaux (SEI) Nig Ltd.

Between January  2014 and February  2015, NAF awarded 10 contracts totalling Nine Hundred and Thirty Million, Five Hundred Thousand, Six Hundred and Ninety US Dollars ($930,500,690.00) to SEI Nig Ltd.

Letters of award and End User Certificates for all the contracts issued by NAF and ONSA respectively did not reflect the contract sums. Rather, these were only found in the vendor’s invoices, all dated 19 March 2015. Additionally, some of the award letters contained misleading delivery dates suggesting fraudulent intent in the award process. The observed discrepancies are in clear contravention of extant procurement regulations.

The SEI contracts included procurement of two used Mi-24V Helicopters instead of the recommended Mi-35M series at the cost of One Hundred and Thirty Six Million, Nine Hundred and Forty Four Thousand US Dollars ($136,944,000.00).

The International Centre for Sports Studies has named the Super Eagles of Nigeria as the youngest average squad in international matches in 2015.



The report coming out of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, revealed that the average age of the Super Eagles was 24.7, and players aged 22 or less featured 19 per cent of the time for the team.

It also indicated that Nigeria used players not born in the country for 14.6 per cent of the matches played. These players include Alex Iwobi and Carl Ikeme.

The team’s captain, Ahmed Musa, was the most used player in the team, playing 544 minutes for the Eagles and scoring two goals.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Buhari Asks Forces To Win War On Terror

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the Nigerian Armed Forces to ensure that they win the war against Boko Haram in the nation’s northeast.

The President made the demand at the National Arcade on Friday via digital devices and live streaming equipment improvised by the Nigerian Army to enable him chat with soldiers in the northeast, as the military marks the Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

The event is used to honour the veterans who are alive as well as the families of the departed. It also featured inspection of Guard of Honour as mounted by the Guards Brigade.

Other government officials who joined the President in the laying of wreaths were Vice President Yemi Osibajo, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu  Dogara.

Prayers were said in Christian and Islamic formats for the repose of the souls of the departed and peace and unity of the country.

A minute silence in honour of the fallen heroes was also observed before President Buhari laid the presidential wreath followed by Vice President Osibajo, Dr Saraki, Mr Dogara, the Chief Justice of the Federation and the Defence Minister.

President Buhari further released the bells of pigeons and the balloons signifying the unfettered peace in the country.

One would have thought that the ceremony will end with the signing of the anniversary register by the President, but everyone watched as President Buhari, in what looks like an innovation, put a call across to the Nigerian soldiers in the war front, a call that was saluted with a joyous roar from the soldiers.

For more than six years Nigerian Armed Forces have battled Boko Haram terrorists mostly in the north-east States of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

Their activities have displaced over two million persons.

While addressing reporters, some of the special guests express confidence in the Nigerian Army.

Channels Television’s correspondent, Chukwuma Onuekwuzi, said that beyond the event everyone seemed to say that the Nigerian Armed Forces, living and dead, deserved further celebration and the gratitude of the nation for their past and on-going sacrifices in the service of their fatherland.

January 15 of every year has been set aside to celebrate fallen heroes of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

It is always celebrated with pomp and pageantry.

On this day, fallen heroes as well as veterans, who put their lives on the line as they fought in and through the first and second world wars, the Nigeria Civil War and peace support missions. Are honoured and remembered.

In Nigeria, the event was initially marked with a National Holiday on November 12 and later on the November 11 (popularly known as 11-11 or poppy day) so that it coincided with the World War II Veterans’ Remembrance Day in the British Commonwealth of Nations.

Much later, it had to be changed to January 15 in memory of the end of the Nigeria Civil War in 1970.

This year, it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the first military coup by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu and four other majors on January 15, 1966.

The coup triggered a chain of other events that eventually snowballed into the fratricidal war of 1967 to 1970.

Lassa Fever Kills One In Abuja

The Ministry of Health in Nigeria has confirmed the death of a Lassa Fever victim at the National Hospital in Abuja, the nation’s capital.



The death came a day after the Ministry confirmed that 41 persons had died so far, with a report that there were no new cases.

Announcing the death at the National Hospital on Wednesday, the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, called on Health workers at all levels to be more vigilant and look out for patients with symptoms of Lassa Fever.

Symptoms Of Lassa Fever

The Minister also directed that all primary and secondary contacts of the victim should be tracked, including the staff of the private hospital in Kubua where the deceased was first managed for one week and subsequently became unconscious before referral to the National Hospital.

He also advised that family members should report at the nearest hospital if anyone had fever for more than two days

The Minister, however called on the residents of Abuja not to panic but to maintain high level vigilance and present themselves for test if they feel unhealthy or they feel symptoms of Lassa Fever which include high fever, stooling, tiredness and vomiting among others.

He cautioned that self-medication should be avoided at this period.

The Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr Jack Momoh, who briefed the Minister On Wednesday evening, during his visit to National Hospital, said that the patient was brought in unconscious from a Private Hospital in Kubua where he was admitted for eight days.

The 33 year old newly married lived in Jos Plateau but came to see a family member in Kubua because of his illness.

He however died within 24 hours of presentation at the National Hospital.

The latest death from Lassa fever brings the total number of deaths to 43 in the country, from 10 states.

Army To Establish Two New Divisions

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Yusuf Buratai, says the Nigerian Army is planning to create two new divisions.



The Chief of Army Staff, on Wednesday, said that the two divisions would be Division 8 in the northeast and Division 6 in the south-south.

General Buratai, who announced the step at a lecture on the ‘Nigerian Army Challenges and Future Perspectives’, said that the key priority of the Nigerian Army was to maintain operational readiness at all times.

He said the expansion would go hand in hand with the doctrinal review and development of new strategies to enable the Nigerian Army perform its statutory duty of protecting the nation’s integrity .

General Buratai, however, said that the expansion would need the recruitment of more manpower for the Nigerian Army – which is embarking on a recruitment drive of 12,000 personnel yearly to meet the manpower requiems.

While seeking the improvement of platforms for the Nigerian Air force, which provides air support for the army in the fight against Boko Haram, General Buratai also said he had plans for an air battalion.

The plans of the Nigerian Army are no doubt lofty and would be beneficial to the success of the force’s internal security operations.
