Korede Bello begs school management to sit for upcoming exams

Everybody knows that Korede Bello is a student at Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) and It is no longer news that a lecturer had threatened to resign if the Mavin Records fast-rising act, is allowed to write the forthcoming examinations after failing to meet up with the compulsory 70% class attendance set by the school.

But what is news is that after the music act was informed of his ineligibility to take the exams he allegedly went to meet with top officials of the school to find a way out, using his star status as a leverage but it seems he has hit a stonewall as the lecturer on his case is hell-bent on making good his threats.

Report also has it that the singer came to school and was seen begging one of the school’s notable official to lean on the lecturer in question but Potpourri can tell you that his situation is not looking particularly good.

Periodic table gets four new elements

Elements 113, 115, 117 and 118 to be named by scientists from Russia, U.S., Japan

Four new elements have been officially added to the periodic table, completing its seventh row.
Elements 113, 115, 117 and 118 have been penciled in on the table for years, and laboratories in Russia, the United States and Japan have made multiple claims to discover them. But official recognition had to wait until the end of 2015, when a group of independent experts agreed that the evidence was valid. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), headquartered in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, announced the group’s conclusions on December 30, 2015.

All of the elements were created in the lab, by smashing lighter atomic nuclei together. The unstable agglomerations of protons and neutrons lost mere fractions of a second before they fall apart into smaller, more stable fragments.

The teams that have been given credit for the discoveries can now put forward proposals for the elements’ names and two-letter symbols. Elements can be named after one of their chemical or physical properties, a mythological concept, a mineral, a place or country, or a scientist.
Priority for discovering element 113 went to researchers in Japan, who are particularly delighted because it will become the first artificial element to be named in East Asia. When the element was first sighted 12 years ago, ‘Japonium’ was suggested as a name.

The team at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-based Science in Wako, near Tokyo, made its first claim to have spotted element 113 in 2004, and followed it up with a more convincing sighting in 2012. By then, it had created three atoms of the element. “To scientists, this is of greater value than an Olympic gold medal,” said Ryoji Noyori, who received the 2001 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, at a press conference about the IUPAC decision. (Noyori was not a member of the Japanese team, but is a former president of RIKEN).

Russian and US researchers made a rival claim to have discovered 113, but were not given priority by the expert group, drawn from IUPAC and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

However, Russia and the United States did get the credit and naming rights for the other new elements. Elements 115 and 117 were first created by collaboration between the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, the IUPAC/IUPAP committee said. Work from other teams, such as a Swedish group using a German accelerator, helped to confirm element 115’s existence.
The credit for discovering element 118 — the heaviest ever created — has been assigned to the Dubna and Lawrence Livermore teams. The element has a chequered history: a 1999 claim to have made it was retracted two years later amid accusations that data had been falsified.

Physicists will now try to create elements 119 and 120, a feat that should be possible with current technology, says Rolf-Dietmar Herzberg, a nuclear physicist at the University of Liverpool, UK. No one has yet claimed a sighting, however: researchers at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany, tried for five months in 2012 without success. Beyond element 120, researchers agree, the chances of getting two nuclei to fuse are vanishingly small.

5 surefire ways to be prominent on Nigerian Twitter

 

The Nigerian twitter-sphere is a bag of craziness, with updates ranging from outright brilliant, funny and creative, to downright inane.
It’s amazing what people can do with 140 characters. So do you need attention, feeling bored, need something to spice up your day, or really, really angry at someone, then twitter is your friend.

Just remember that Netizens on twitter are eager and ever ready with witty tweets.
Here are five very simple ways of becoming a twitter trend:

1. Be politically incorrect
Nobody likes to be a victim, but everybody has, at one time or another, taken part in a jest of someone weaker or, supposedly inferior.
It’s all for the fun, right? Recall the Sean Tizzle tweets about Adele’s ‘Hello’? Epic!

2. Accuse someone of something scandalous (preferably your ex or colleague)
Nothing gets people talking (in this case tweeting) like a good scandal. It doesn’t necessary have to be true, maybe a half-truth or half the story.
Twitter Netizens will surely complete it. Just pull a Dammy Krane on anybody. Or simply accuse your ex of something –anything at all, but be sure that it is jaw popping.

3. Affirm a stereotype
Again, it doesn’t matter if the stereotype is true (are stereotypes true anyway?), just tweet it and throw in a hashtag for good measure.
Remember to stay away from: Benin and witches (it’s too usual, boring and old), Calabar girls and big nyash (too trite and almost stale), African mothers and wahala (this is funny all the time, but come on! be creative; come up with something new), Igbo people and money (so true, but come on folks, do better), Yoruba and Owambe (let’s be real here, this is old). Try something new and creative.
Remember, whatever you come up with must be street and mumu-friendly, with a little bit of satire and truism.

4. Be Vic O
The honest truth is that in Nigeria, Vic O is your go to guy for anything internet hit and trending.
How he does it, we don’t know.
But we suspect he has a more than average IQ when it comes to making a fool of himself.
Hence, the best lesson we should all learn from Vic O is: everybody loves people that make a fool of themselves.
Nobody wants to be seen as the village idiot, why not make yourself one? I guarantee you’ll be an instant hit. Just be consistent in the self mockery, one day you’ll be a hit.

5. Throw an e-punch (also known as pulling an Olamide) : I was in my house and trailer came to jam me
I suppose not everybody can be king of the street i.e have a squad of soldiers standing by at Lagos mainland, willing and ready to do their commanders’ bidding.
But we all have one thing: fingers to insult anybody from the presidency to your state governor to that wicked senior in secondary school –after all na you send political holders to come twitter?.
Only rule to Twitter e-punching is that your tweet must be witty, have something catchy (like the legendary “biko leave trash for LAWMA”) and have, at the very least, 0.01% element of truth.
Do all, or any, of the above and I guarantee you that you’ll be a Twitter hit.
Just stay true to form.

MTN Apologises To Subscribers, Regulators For Poor Service

Dominant mobile operator MTN Nigeria said in Lagos on Friday that it is willing to restore relations with the telecoms umpire, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), regardless of the current situation in the industry.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, Ferdinand Moolman, and Corporate Service Executive, Aminat Oyagbola, noted that MTN had utmost confidence in NCC and holds the regulator in high esteem, emphasising that MTN was ready to restore good terms with the regulator.
According to Oyagbola, the approach to reconciliation is to correct any area where the firm had erred in the past.
Said she: “The approach is to take the steps lined up to move the industry forward, correct where we have erred in the past, ensure good business relationships with all stakeholders in the industry. It starts with a show of good faith; speaking the truth. We want to restore and generate more goodwill,” she stated.
The new CEO added that the fine issue was very critical for MTN to resolve, disclosing that the fine is about 95 per cent of their total revenue for a year.
The telecommunications company appealed to affected subscribers in the on-going re-registration of Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards, stressing that the whole process would end well for subscribers, the operator and the industry as a whole.
Moolman said it had become expedient that MTN have a solid database of its subscribers as a basis for the next phase of the telecommunications revolution, especially in the area of broadband provisioning.
Oyagbola continued that a hamonised database was needed to be able to offer world class services, saying “MTN actually brought in new systems, hires about 10,000 contract staff for the re-registration process. We are committed to supporting the government in building a national database”.
She noted that MTN is doing the registration afresh, that it would be done in batches and completed in the next six months.
“We are sorry about the number of times a subscriber had to revisit our outlet. The target is to have an accurate database from our own end and then syncronise it with that of the regulator.
“It is a voluminous exercise. We have placed order for SIM registration equipment from the manufacturers, but they claimed to have run out of stocks because it is not only Nigeria that is registering subscribers. They gave us till March for them to have stocks,” Oyagbola stated.
The CEO lamented the impact of the falling oil prices and fluctuating foreign exchange. He maintained that these challenges are impacting negatively on the ability of the firm to import equipment from abroad.
“It is really disturbing and it has become more difficult to import equipment from abroad. These two issues of falling oil prices and a fluctuating foreign exchange regime are serious issues, but we are confident about Central Bank of Nigeria’s efforts in resolving the matter.”

Ten Signs To Show One Is Depressed

There is yet to be an acceptable figure of depressed people in the world. However, millions are depressed globally and the figures are higher in richer and modernised countries. For example, an estimated 19 million Americans suffer from depression, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The research has shown that 10 to 25 percent of American women, as well as 5 to 12 percent of men, will become clinically depressed at some time during their lives.
Unfortunately, depression is not an affliction that most people want to talk about, and this means that many of those who suffer from the condition do not seek help. When depression strikes, the effects can be debilitating and life altering, and remaining in denial will not lead to a cure. Yet many men and women who are stricken with depression refuse to admit they suffer from it. Instead, they blame their feelings on “having the blues” or simply being sad due to circumstances of life.
Although everyone gets down in the dumps from time to time, how do you know if you are actually suffering from depression? While there are many theories regarding signs and symptoms of depression, according to Forbes, there are 10 helpful ways to detect depression.

1. Being over-confident and fearless: Many people who suffer from depression, particularly those who are high achievers, cope with the condition by behaving in ways that are opposite of how they truly feel. Psychiatrists refer to these actions as “escapism.” Common behaviors of escapism include high risk activities or carelessness, like parachuting, mountain climbing or gambling with the rent money.

2. Increased alcohol consumption: Drinking alcohol is the most common way that people with depression choose in an effort to “self-medicate” and escape the emotional turmoil. Not only does this tactic fail to work, but could also lead to a developing a severe drinking problem in addition to being depressed.

3. Sexual obsession or exercise: Many who suffer from depression try to achieve excellence between the sheets or on the treadmill. Sexual activities and working out at the gym can provide a temporary feeling of euphoria that keeps symptoms of depression temporarily at bay.

4. Anger issues: Do routine conflicts quickly escalate into fights? Feeling helpless is a very common symptom of depression. One flawed way suffers fight their way out of feeling helpless is to fight back when they feel the least bit threatened or challenged. If small things constantly enrage you, take it as a serious warning sign.

5. Suppressed feelings: Rather than feeling sad or unhappy, some people who suffer from depression turn off their feelings altogether. Choosing to not care about the people around you, or about the outcome of events and decisions, only serves to ward off pain for a little while. Closing off your feelings can also alienate people from you, and damage valuable relationships.

6. Excessive socializing: While many people with depression would rather be alone in their misery, others immerse themselves in a flurry of social activities. This is a temporary fix—staying busy and being in a social whirlwind is a short term way to escape symptoms of depression.

7. Inability to concentrate: Daydreaming and lack of concentration effects even those people without depression. If you spend a significant amount of time daydreaming and fantasizing, instead of being grounded in reality, you may have a problem.

8. Trouble accepting praise or goodwill: People in the throes of depression have low self esteem; therefore they have trouble accepting praise, kind gestures, or compliments because they feel they don’t deserve them.

9. You work harder but not smarter: Depressed people have a hard time seeing easy solutions to routine or simple problems causing them to work harder to accomplish even the smallest of tasks.Uncontrolled emotions: People who are depressed tend to over-react to minor incidents, but ignore catastrophic news. This emotionally out of sync behavior is called “inappropriate affect” by psychiatrists, and refers to behavior that is opposite of the emotional reaction an incident normally triggers. As an example, a depressed person could express no emotion if a parent dies, but cry uncontrollably while watching a faraway minor disaster on the nightly news.

10. If you have symptoms of depression, do yourself and your loved ones a favor by seeking professional help. As one of America’s most influential psychologists, Abraham Maslow said, “What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself.” Admitting you have a problem is the first step.

5 Things You Say Which Hurt Her A Lot!

Men are much more emotionally stronger when it comes to comparing them with women. A woman
will always feel too much and think too much, and that makes her an extremely sensitive being.
However, when the two of them are together, there are chances that some days, she will go to sleep hurt.
Her guy will say something – intentionally or unintentionally – and it will hurt her a lot, but instead of
complaining, she will just pass. How can you know that this has happened? Simply, by avoiding saying any of these:

5. ‘You are good for nothing!’
When a guy tells his girl that she is good for nothing, he ends up hurting her a lot. Every woman makes a
lot of sacrifices in a relationship. She is always making efforts. Some days, her efforts will be loud, prominent
and clear, while at other days you won’t even realize what she is doing. You cannot just judge her and label
her as someone who is good for nothing, while she is genuinely making efforts to make you happy and/or proud.

4. ‘You look horrible!’
She knows that you love her a lot. She knows that you are joking. Nonetheless, you never tell your girl
that she is looking horrible. A girl might not want the whole world to think that she is pretty. However, it is
just the opinion of that one person which matters a lot to her. However, when she hears this from him, she
might laugh it off, but she will definitely hate it. There are a lot of other things to joke about. Try them!

3. ‘You are a poor partner’
You never – NEVER – tell your girl that she is a poor partner. You must never make her feel like her efforts
have never been sufficient and that after all this time, you are not even satisfied with her. A relationship
takes just as much energy for a woman, if not more, and when you say something like this, you make her feel that she was making efforts for nothing. This will make her feel small and insignificant, and she might take time recovering her self-respect.

2. ‘Why do you keep crying all the time?’
Like I mentioned earlier, women are sensitive creatures. Since they are always overemotional and they think a lot, thy often end up concluding things which are far from reality. As a result, they upset themselves for no reason. However, you don’t get to
complain over it because if she feels everything excessively, she also loves you excessively. If you mock her for crying all the time or for being too emotional, you are basically making fun of who she is.
If her constant crying is bad for her health, there are better ways to express you concern, instead of
hurting her a lot.

1. ‘That xyz girl is really hot/pretty’
Women know how men are. They know that they are always a little flirtatious and they might find other
women pretty, even when they have someone and despite the fact that they love her a lot. They accept it
because that is their nature. However, what they really hate is the compulsion that men feel to tell this to their girl. Yes, it is good that you find this certain woman pretty or it is nice if she is hot, but you don’t have to tell this to your girlfriend. Women can be very possessive and your behavior might even make her feel insecure. Avoid doing things that hurt her.

The breaches identified by the Audit Committee include non-specification of procurement costs, absence of contract agreements, award of contracts beyond authorised thresholds, transfer of public funds for unidentified purposes and general non-adherence to provisions of the Public Procurement Act.

Furthermore, the procurement processes were arbitrarily carried out and generally characterized by irregularities and fraud. In many cases, the procured items failed to meet the purposes they were procured for, especially the counter insurgency efforts in the North East.

A major procurement activity undertaken by ONSA for NAF  was that concerning the contracts awarded to Societe D’ Equipment Internationaux (SEI) Nig Ltd.

Between January  2014 and February  2015, NAF awarded 10 contracts totalling Nine Hundred and Thirty Million, Five Hundred Thousand, Six Hundred and Ninety US Dollars ($930,500,690.00) to SEI Nig Ltd.

Letters of award and End User Certificates for all the contracts issued by NAF and ONSA respectively did not reflect the contract sums. Rather, these were only found in the vendor’s invoices, all dated 19 March 2015. Additionally, some of the award letters contained misleading delivery dates suggesting fraudulent intent in the award process. The observed discrepancies are in clear contravention of extant procurement regulations.

The SEI contracts included procurement of two used Mi-24V Helicopters instead of the recommended Mi-35M series at the cost of One Hundred and Thirty Six Million, Nine Hundred and Forty Four Thousand US Dollars ($136,944,000.00).

However, it was confirmed that the helicopters were excessively priced and not operationally air w

Super Eagles Rated Youngest Team Of 2015

The International Centre for Sports Studies has named the Super Eagles of Nigeria as the youngest average squad in international matches in 2015.

The report coming out of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, revealed that the average age of the Super Eagles was 24.7, and players aged 22 or less featured 19 per cent of the time for the team.

It also indicated that Nigeria used players not born in the country for 14.6 per cent of the matches played. These players include Alex Iwobi and Carl Ikeme.

The team’s captain, Ahmed Musa, was the most used player in the team, playing 544 minutes for the Eagles and scoring two goals.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Buhari Asks Forces To Win War On Terror

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the Nigerian Armed Forces to ensure that they win the war against Boko Haram in the nation’s northeast.

The President made the demand at the National Arcade on Friday via digital devices and live streaming equipment improvised by the Nigerian Army to enable him chat with soldiers in the northeast, as the military marks the Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

The event is used to honour the veterans who are alive as well as the families of the departed. It also featured inspection of Guard of Honour as mounted by the Guards Brigade.

Other government officials who joined the President in the laying of wreaths were Vice President Yemi Osibajo, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu  Dogara.

The national troupe on war horses, heralded the coming of President Buhari into the National Arcade accompanied by the commander of the Guards Brigade for the review of the National Guard of Honour on parade

After the parade, the President and other special guests made a solemn movement straight to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier for the biggle

Prayers were said in Christian and Islamic formats for the repose of the souls of the departed and peace and unity of the country.

A minute silence in honour of the fallen heroes was also observed before President Buhari laid the presidential wreath followed by Vice President Osibajo, Dr Saraki, Mr Dogara, the Chief Justice of the Federation and the Defence Minister.

President Buhari further released the bells of pigeons and the balloons signifying the unfettered peace in the country.

One would have thought that the ceremony will end with the signing of the anniversary register by the President, but everyone watched as President Buhari, in what looks like an innovation, put a call across to the Nigerian soldiers in the war front, a call that was saluted with a joyous roar from the soldiers.

For more than six years Nigerian Armed Forces have battled Boko Haram terrorists mostly in the north-east States of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

Their activities have displaced over two million persons.

While addressing reporters, some of the special guests express confidence in the Nigerian Army.

Channels Television’s correspondent, Chukwuma Onuekwuzi, said that beyond the event everyone seemed to say that the Nigerian Armed Forces, living and dead, deserved further celebration and the gratitude of the nation for their past and on-going sacrifices in the service of their fatherland.

January 15 of every year has been set aside to celebrate fallen heroes of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

It is always celebrated with pomp and pageantry.

On this day, fallen heroes as well as veterans, who put their lives on the line as they fought in and through the first and second world wars, the Nigeria Civil War and peace support missions. Are honoured and remembered.

In Nigeria, the event was initially marked with a National Holiday on November 12 and later on the November 11 (popularly known as 11-11 or poppy day) so that it coincided with the World War II Veterans’ Remembrance Day in the British Commonwealth of Nations.

Much later, it had to be changed to January 15 in memory of the end of the Nigeria Civil War in 1970.

This year, it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the first military coup by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu and four other majors on January 15, 1966.

The coup triggered a chain of other events that eventually snowballed into the fratricidal war of 1967 to 1970.
