Blogger to pay US$150,000 for libel against Singapore’s PM

A 34-year-old blogger Roy Ngerng has been slammed with libel against Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
The blogger has been ordered to pay the sum of S$150,000 (3.8 million baht) in installments over the next 17 years, his lawyer said Monday.Activist Blogger to pay US$150,000 for libel against Singapore’s PM

Under the agreement with the prime minister, Ngerng’s lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam told AFP that his client would pay S$30,000 by Wednesday to cover the costs of an assessment hearing.

To pay the actual damages the blogger would then fork out $100 a month for the next five years before the amount increases to $1,000 a month until the amount is paid, which would take a total of 17 years.

The blogger was found guilty in November 2014 of defaming Lee after accusing him in a blog post of misappropriating state pension funds.

A source familiar with the case told AFP that Ngerng had initially asked to be let off the remainder after paying S$36,000. But this was rejected by the prime minister, who agreed to the payment in installments.
Singapore has consistently ranked highly in surveys as one of the world’s least corrupt countries, but rights groups say its leaders have used financially ruinous defamation suits to silence critics and political opponents.Singaporean leaders maintain that the lawsuits are necessary to protect their reputations from unfounded allegations. The blogger initially offered S$5,000 as compensation to Mr Lee, who rejected the amount.
After being sued by the prime minister, Ngerng was fired from his government hospital job for administrative reasons which he did not contest.
He successfully raised more than S$112,000 through crowd-funding but the cash ran out during his defense.
The local media in Singapore is tightly controlled, leaving bloggers and other online commentators as the strongest critics of the long-ruling People’s Action Party.

The Strike Was Suspended Not Called Off – PENGASSAN President

The President of the PENGASSAN has said that the industrial action embarked by the Union was suspended and not called off.
PENGASSAN President- Francis Johnson
Mr Francis Johnson who was a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, said “A committee was set up to look at the issue. As at yesterday (Thursday), both PENGASSAN and NUPENG asked the committee to bring the names of their members so everything can be done transparently.”
The PENGASSAN President, however, gave reasons why the Union suspended the strike action.
“There was a communique issued, and in the communique there are some actions to be taken with timelines and time frame. We also need to see the sincerity and genuineness to be put in place so that everything can be done with transparency.

He urged for the government to review where we are, especially in an administration of accountability and transparency.

Answering a question on the cause of the strike, Mr Johnson said that the strike was as a result of the statement made by the Minister of State for Petroleum, (Dr. Ibe Kachikwu), about unbundling the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

“The Minister, while addressing a particular forum, said that the government will unbundle NNPC, set up directorates and have about 30 companies.

“The Union stakeholders at no fora, were taken along on such development.
“The act setting up NNPC, was an act of parliament, for you to also do anything, the act must be repeated or modified, which has not been done by the National Assembly.

The Minister of State for Petroleum, on March 3, said that the NNPC would be unbundled into 30 competitive revenue generating subsidiaries in the coming week.
He made the disclosure at the Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Mr Johnson, however, advised the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr Kachikwu, to issue a journal stating that his statement on restructuring the NNPC was misunderstood.
“It is also good that Mr Kachikwu said that he was misunderstood. He should issue statement that it is not his intention to unbundle the NNPC,” he added.

NTTF Fixes March 21 Deadline for U-16 National League

The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) has fixed March 21 as registration deadline for the maiden National U-16 league which will feature players across the country.

According to the Secretary General of the federation, Chinedu Ezeala-Ogundare, it becomes necessary to give the participants enough time to complete their registration for the championship.
Esther Oribamise1
“With the success recorded by the senior national team at the ITTF World Team Championship in Malaysia, we want to ensure that we groom players that will come through the rank and that is why the U-16 National League becomes necessary and we have decided to give the states the opportunity finish their registration for the competition. We will not allow late registration because we want to give the teams chance to be part of the tournament which will help us to unearth new talents,” she added.

President of NTTF, Wahid Oshodi, confirmed that more talented players would be given the opportunity to showcase their skills to the national coaches and supervisors.

“I think our focus in 2016 as in 2015 is that we must continue to develop the junior and cadet players. We must give our most talented young players the right atmosphere for them to grow. This of course means giving them the best coaching and affording them the opportunity to play in tournaments internationally so we can assess how well they are doing against the best young players in the world. We have done quite well in this regard in the last two years but there are a lot more gifted players all over the country and we must do our best to discover and harness them. We hope to be able to create new tournaments outside Lagos and Abuja. If we can find the right partnerships with the private sector this will assist greatly in boosting the spread of the game all over the country,” Oshodi concluded.

The objective of the league is to give new players the opportunity to play in national junior teams as well as work their way into the senior team.

The competition will serve off on March 29 to April 8 at the National Training Centre in National Stadium while the grand finale which is known as Super League will hold on May 14 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Each state across the country is expected to present two boys and two girls while the top eight players in the boys and girls event will qualify for the Super League.

According to the prospectus of the tournament, states wishing to participate will register with the NTTF, while only the first 20 boys teams and the first 16 girls teams to register for the League shall be accepted to participate while only players registered by states which are affiliated to NTTF are eligible to participate, while all players shall hold the current NTTF Player’s License, which must be produced on demand.

Healthy Co-Parenting Tips

divorce-mmjaonh8l18nkp2u5sce8o9ux1ym8dffbi8gopwtm4

It is unfortunate that divorce can most times bring out the worst in us. The biggest obstacles to successful co-parenting are emotions like anger, resentment, and jealousy.
Those kinds of emotions make the challenge of co-parenting with your ex more difficult. However, your children still need their mother and their father—whether they still live together or not. Here are five things to remember to help you successfully co-parent together.
  • It Is Not About You: It is about your kids. If the adults involved just remember that it is about the kids, there would not be near as many challenges. Commit to putting your children’s well-being ahead of any issues you may have with your ex. It takes maturity and dedication to let go of past wounds and bitterness, but it will make a difficult situation much easier.
  • Always Treat The Other Parent With Respect. No matter how difficult this may be, it is imperative you treat your children’s mother/father with respect—regardless of how they treat you. Not only does this help keep a civil relationship between you and your ex, it is also in the best interests of your children.
  • Keep Lines of Communication Open With Co-parent. Effective communication is the number one most important factor in maintaining healthy relationships. Unfortunately, verbal communication is not generally a man’s strong suit.
  • Let The Kids See Their Bio Parents. Your children did not ask for this situation, so do not hurt them any more than they already are by not allowing them to see their biological parent. In addition, do not “punish” your ex by withholding their children from them.
  • Keep It Business-like. A healthy co-parenting relationship looks like a business relationship. Do not bring emotions into it. Do what is best for your kids…always!

El-Rufai wants Kaduna Pastors/Imams licenced before preaching

El-Rufai wants Kaduna Pastors Imams licenced before preaching

Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmed el-Rufai is in the eye of the storm again, after he mooted a censorship bill which has been presented to the Kaduna State House of Assembly seeking to license all preachers and also restrict praying time.

The bill by the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory has been rejected by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and it is already raising tension in the North Western State which has witnessed similar crises in the past.

The Religious Regulation Bill, designed to replace the Religious Regulation Edict of 1984, is geared towards regulating Christianity and Islam as it seeks to create an inter-faith Ministerial Committee to be appointed by the  governor and exercise control over Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, and the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN.

Recall that the Kaduna State governor in January of 2013 received a bashing from adherents for allegedly insulting christianity in a post on his twitter timeline.

Egypt minister in trouble after comments on Prophet Mohammed

Egypt minister in trouble after comments on Prophet Mohammed

The controversial comments of Egypt’s justice minister Ahmed el-Zend who remarked about imprisoning “the prophet” in an interview has landed him in hot soup.

Moment after he made the remarks, it went viral on social media and the minister received a backlash of comments from many who considered his statement to be blasphemous.

While fielding questions from an interviewer of a private Egyptian channel, the minister was asked whether he will imprison journalists and he replied thus:

“Even if it’s the prophet – peace and prayers upon him,” Zend said before quickly repenting. He then added that anyone who is at fault will be imprisoned “regardless of their stature.

“Even judges get imprisoned. I don’t want to discuss imprisoning a journalist or a teacher, I’m talking about imprisoning the accused, don’t give them a title,” he said.

Earlier on Sunday, Egypt’s al-Azhar, Sunni Islam’s highest seat of learning, released a statement on Sunday warning against any blasphemous comments surrounding the prophet “even if it were a mistake”.

Snapchat possibly developing smart glasses

The hirings include those from places like Microsoft’s HoloLens, PTC’s (formerly Qualcomm’s) Vuforia and eye-tracking tech maker Eyefluence.
The company showed interest in augmented reality during the last hype wave surrounding Google Glass.
Vergence Labs, which produced a pair of glasses equipped with an embedded camera, was acquired by Snapchat for $15 million in March of 2014.

The acquisition accompanied a larger $50 million acquisition of Scan.me, a QR code-scanning/creating technology that would later manifest itself it the company’s Snaptags feature.

Snapchat did not openly advertise these acquisitions then, details of it were leaked in the Sony data hack in December of 2014.

It was an especially odd-sounding move then, but fast-forward a couple of years past the acquisitions and the company has added a few billion dollars to its valuation, as well as a variety of mainstay features like its Discover tab and geofilters.

The real question is whether Snapchat is using these hires to attempt to learn more about augmented reality tech and more effectively adapt its platform for usage on smart glasses or whether the engineering folk are actually just building glasses with the goal of a consumer release.

Search for signs of life on Mars begins

Search for signs of life on Mars begins

Europe’s ExoMars orbiter is scheduled to launch in the early morning of March 14 to find traces of life on planet Mars.

When it gets to Mars in October, the Trace Gas Orbiter will map the methane around Mars in hopes of finding its source. The maps will help determine the landing site of a rover, coming in 2018, that can investigate further.

The orbiter will also release a lander, named Schiaparelli, after the Italian astronomer who drew maps of Mars in the late 1800s.

The lander will function for only a few days, studying Mars’ global dust storm (sort of like the one in The Martian, but less intense and more realistic).

The lander’s main function is to test out a new landing system that’s designed for a future mission, to land a more functional Mars rover in 2021.

That rover will carry a drill and a laboratory to search for the signatures of life, both past and present. It’s slated to launch in 2018.

Amaechi, Wike abuse each other

Amaechi, Wike abuse each other

The bad blood between former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi and his successor, Nyesome Wike is obviously still flowing strong.

Both men at the weekend threw caution to the wind and engaged in throwing abuses at each other at separate events, as Amaechi landed in the state from Abuja.

Ameachi, who is now Minister for Aviation, stated that Wike is in the state to steal, and that he would do anything for money, including “sell his own mother”.

While speaking on a radion interview in Port Harcourt, Amaechi said, “Nyesom Wike is here to steal money; he was my chief of staff‎. We will chase Wike’s boys out of the water now we have Dakuku Peterside as DG NIMASA. People still want me back as governor.‎ I will be here till theMarch 19 re-run election; let’s see what Wike can do. Let’s face it man to man. If you see the money stolen by Nyesom Wike in the ministry of education you will be shocked.

“Every day you wake up to find out that Wike has killed somebody.‎ Wike has collected N50bn; what has he done with the money? By this time when I was sworn in I was already commissioning projects. Wike is so desperate that he can sell his mother” Amaechi said.

On his part, Governor Wike said that Amaechi is a failed governor who needs urgent psychiatric evaluation and treatment, adding, that the former governor  is monstrously  corrupt, and that he will be prosecuted after  his litigation on his indictment by the judicial Commission of Inquiry.

Speaking at the PDP Rivers West Senatorial District Campaign  rally at Ahoada on Saturday,  Governor Wike said  that only a man with psychiatric  disorder  will compare his failed  eight years  in office to just eight months of  the new administration.

According to him, Amaechi  lacks proper parental  upbringing hence his desperation in the political arena, adding, that the APC  has refused to campaign  for the rerun  elections  because they are relying on the military  and  security  forces to rig.

“He is a psychiatric patient who was at the radio station  abusing people who are old enough  to  be  his fathers/mothers simply because his party lost at the Supreme Court.”
