The 'boast' of Mother Angelica was in Christ, not herself

Memorial Mass for Mother Angelica at Our Lady of the Angels Chapel on March 30, 2016. Credit: EWTN.

The life of EWTN foundress Mother Angelica was a testament to St. Paul’s teaching that “God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong,” preached the celebrant of vespers at a prayer vigil offered for her repose.
“How we do need to interpret” Mother Angelica’s life, Fr. Anthony Mary, MFVA, preached, “is if we’re going to boast in anything, the boast of Mother Angelica was not herself. The boast of Mother Angelica was always Jesus Christ.”
Fr. Anthony Mary preached at Thursday evening’s solemn vespers for Mother Angelica, foundress of EWTN and abbess emerita of Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, as she lay in repose in the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama. Mother Angelica passed away Easter Sunday, March 27.
The vespers were followed by a prayer vigil for Mother Angelica celebrated by Bishop Robert Joseph Baker of Birmingham.
The reading for the vespers was 1 Corinthians 1:26-31, where St. Paul writes that “God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no man might boast before God.”
Mother Angelica lived this reading, Fr. Anthony Mary said, because she, like the Apostles, was “weak” and “lowly” yet served God faithfully when chosen by Him. “Our Lord didn’t call the perfect” to spread the Gospel, he noted, but men who were “old” and “weak.”
“How deeply she loved them,” he said of Mother Angelica and the Apostles, because “she rejoiced in the weakness of those men” because they were like us, and not perfect.
She came from a “humble” and “challenging background,” Fr. Anthony Mary said, and then chose a “life of humility” by responding to her vocation as a cloistered nun. Mother Angelica also dealt with back pain and used crutches for years and had severe asthma. She suffered a stroke in 2001 that forced her off the air. After that she lived a “hidden life” where she was “frail” and “weak,” he said.
“Pain is my constant companion,” Fr. Anthony Mary quoted Mother Angelica, saying it was her “constant reminder” of her “union with Our Suffering Lord.” This helped her to be in tune with the promptings of the Holy Spirit, he said.
Her operation, EWTN, had a humble nature, he added. It started in a garage and the main campus in Irondale is still “not really anything much to look at,” he said. It’s “not CNN” and “certainly not ESPN,” he added to chuckles in the audience. Yet it “carries out the mission that Mother founded” and has done great work, he noted.
Like the Apostles who were instructed by Christ in the Gospel to cast their nets over the side of the boat, the nets were tearing at the size of the catch, Fr. Anthony Mary said. It was Jesus and the Father Who did this, not the Apostles, he emphasized. They simply “followed the command of the Lord.”
Mother Angelica taught that when we preach the Gospel, “we have to cast the nets” and respond to God’s call, he explained. She lived this by obedience to God and trusting in His call, he said, and God produced the fruits.
Preaching at the prayer vigil later on Thursday, Fr. Miguel Marie Soeherman, MFVA, admonished those in attendance to heed the words of Mother Angelica on death and judgment.
“Death indeed is the reality that everyone will face,” he said, noting that Mother called it “the beautiful moment of our life.”
“We will be judged on love,” he said, on the choices we made “for God or for ourselves.”
“Make your choice now,” he quoted Mother Angelica. “Wherever you land, wherever you go, it’s forever. So make it a good destination.”

India's bishops push government to help find Fr Tom

After the circulation of rumors claiming Fr. Tom Uzhunnalil was tortured and crucified on Good Friday, the Indian bishops have written to the government urging greater effort in locating the priest.

“A lot of rumors are being spread in the social media that Fr. Tom was subjected to cruel torture and then crucified on Good Friday,” the Indian bishops wrote in a March 28 letter addressed to India’s Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj.

The wide circulation of the “gruesome news” both at home and abroad is upsetting, and “brings agony to the relatives” and arouses concern in everyone, they said.

“It will be in the best interest of our country to step up the efforts to verify the veracity of this disturbing rumor.”

Bishop Paul Hinder, the Vicar Apostolic of Southern Arabia (whose territory serves Catholics in the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Yemen) told CNA on Monday that he has “strong indications that Fr. Tom is still alive in the hands of the kidnappers,” but could not give further information, in order to protect the life of the priest.

While voicing their appreciation for previous efforts the government of India has made in securing the release of abducted citizens from the hands of terrorists, most recently Fr. Alexis Prem Kumar, India's bishops said more ought to be done in the case of Fr. Tom.

On March 4, four gunmen attacked a Missionaries of Charity-run retirement home in Aden, Yemen, killing 16 people, including four Missionary of Charity sisters. Fr. Tom Uzhunnalil was kidnapped by the gunmen during the attacks, which are thought to have been perpetrated by Islamist terrorists, though no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Since then several blogs and media outlets have reported that Fr. Tom was crucified by Islamic State militants on Good Friday. However, there has been no confirmation of the event by friends, family, or Fr. Uzhunnalil’s community.

In their letter, the Indian bishops said they immediately requested the help of the government in tracing and rescuing Fr. Tom after hearing the “sad and shocking news” of his abduction.

Messages were sent to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Minister of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh, and the Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, “soliciting their urgent intervention to ensure the safety of Fr. Tom.”

The bishops said they have been in constant contact with the Indian government on the matter, and voiced their gratitude for the efforts they have already made in monitoring the process of both finding and rescuing Fr. Uzhunnalil.

However, in spite of the efforts, the bishops stressed that so far there is “no definite answer” regarding the whereabouts of the abducted priest or the motive of his kidnappers.

The bishops noted that the Vatican has upped its own efforts to find Fr. Tom through their diplomatic channels, and requested that Swaraj “leave no stone unturned to ensure the safety and the quick release of Fr. Tom from the hands of the abductors.”

In a March 29 press statement the bishops noted that officials of India’s Ministry of External Affairs have assured them they are “closely looking into all the aspects” of the case and of a safe release for Fr. Tom.

A senior official of the Ministry of External Affairs assured the bishops that Swaraj would receive them personally at her earliest convenience to share “the available and pertinent details” on Fr. Tom’s release.

Pope Francis sends vestments, financial aid to Iraqi Christians

As a sign of affection and closeness, Pope Francis has decided to send vestments used in the liturgy and a financial donation to Christian refugees in Erbil through the Catholic pastoral charity Aid to the Church in Need.

“Mercy invites us to bend over these brothers of ours in order to dry their tears, to heal their moral and physical wounds, and to console their afflicted and perhaps lost hearts,” the Pope said in a letter addressed to Bishop Francesco Cavina of Carpi.

To do this, the Pope said, is not just “an act of proper charity, but a relief to your own body, because all Christians, by virtue of their shared baptism, are 'one' in Christ.”

Bishop Cavina will be part of a delegation traveling to Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, April 1-4 with Aid to the Church in Need (ACN).

Other members of the delegation will include Bishop Antonio Suetta of Ventimiglia-San Remo, Fr. Massimo Fabbri in representation of the Archdiocese of Bologna, and Alessandro Monteduro, director of ACN in Italy, who will serve as the group’s guide.

In a March 23 article published on ACN’s website, Bishop Cavina said that as soon as Pope Francis heard about the delegation’s visit, he called expressing his desire “to send a gift to our brothers in the faith in Iraq.”

This gift includes vestments and a personal financial donation, which the Pope will entrust to Bishop Cavina, who will then give it to the local Church when the delegation arrives.

In his letter to the bishop, Francis said the trip is “an initiative which expresses friendship, ecclesial communion and closeness to many brothers and sisters, whose situation of affliction and tribulation pains me deeply and invites us to defend the inalienable right of every person to freely profess their faith.”

The Pope invited delegation members not to forget “the drama of the persecution,” and added that the “courageous and patient witness” of Christians in Iraq “represents for the entire Church a call to rediscover the fruitful source of the Paschal Mystery from which energy, strength and light for a new humanism are drawn.”

As part of their visit, the group will meet with Archbishop Youhanna Boutros Moshe of the Syriac Archeparchy of Mosul, who left the city when it was overrun by the Islamic State in June, 2014.

They will also meet with the Chaldean Archbishop of Erbil, Bashar Warda, who will take them to refugee centers in a mainly Christian suburb of Erbil called Ankawa.

Additionally, the group will stop by the village of Fr. Werenfried, named after the founder of ACN, where 175 Christian families are currently living. The trip will also include visits to ACN schools, which allow nearly 7,000 Iraqi refugee children to continue their education.

Since 2014 ACN has donated more than 15.1 million euros ($17.2 million) to support Christian refugees and displaced persons in Iraq.

The organization stepped up their efforts to offer support during Lent, when the Italian branch promoted six projects aimed at offering aid to the 250,000 Christians still in Iraq. The dioceses of Carpi and Ventimiglia-San Remo have also joined the effort, offering their own donations.

10 Things Every Man Must Do To Look Sexy

sexy man2

Leaving the right impression on every woman you meet can go a long way in determining the course your friendship or intended relationship will go. It is important you look good, feel good and be as sexy as you can if you have any hope of warding off competitors. The good part is a lot of men are conscious of their appearance nowadays which points to the fact that you have to put a little bit of effort into looking good and sexy.

Here are 10 things that can make you exude sexiness.

  • Be A Gentleman
kanye gentleman sexy
Chivalry might be dead to a lot of people but women still find a chivalrous man sexy. Don’t reserve this part of you only for dates, surprise her with your manly characteristics now and again.

  • Look Trim
dress well
It is essential that your weight and size appear proportional. It’s very much unsexy looking at a man with a huge body and a small head. The solution to this lies in either going to the gym or wearing the proper kind of clothes to mask your disproportionate appearance.

  • Have An Amazing Haircut
haircut sexy
When it comes to looking sexy with your haircut, the latest hair trend does not necessarily mean the sexiest. An expensive barber does not mean you’d get a good one that will give you a hairstyle that will suit your appearance and lifestyle. Women see a well carved and nicely structured haircut as sexy. Be sure to get your style right.

  • Be Confident
confidence
To appear sexy, you need to be confident in your own skin. Find the reasons why women will see and think of you as sexy. Be confident in who you are and try to make yourself better than who you were.

  • Facial Hair
beard sexy
Facial hair goes a long way in adding to your sex appeal. Ensure you get yourself properly waxed and shaved by getting rid of any hair that doesn’t look good on you. And by this, we mean nose hair and chest hair that crawls up to your neck.

  • Wear Fitted Clothes
fit sexy
Getting the best of clothes may be expensive as opposed to getting clothes that fit. Look for ready-made clothes that fit your body frame perfectly. A well fitted outfit accentuates your body in all the right places.

  • Have Your Style

Knowing the kind of image you intend to portray can go a long way in helping you create your style. Your style reflects your personality and women will find you incredibly sexy if you’re comfortable in your own skin and clothes.

  • Smell Rich
perfume sexy
Women fund men that smell good irresistibly sexy. You don’t have to drill a hole in your wallet to get the most expensive perfume, but try and at least get something that will make everyone crave a whiff of you after you’re long gone. You can get advice from a female friend on what type of cologne will go best with your personality.

  • Stay Clean
clean sexy
This perhaps is the most appealing and sexy thing women look out for in men. A woman can forgive you for everything if you appear clean and neat always. Chances are she’d get carried away with the sex appeal that comes from your neatness. Pay good attention to your clothes, breath, skin and general hygiene and she’d probably consider licking stuffs off your sexy body.

  • Stand Upright
stand tall sexy
Slouched shoulders makes a man look tired and defeated but a man standing upright looks tall and powerful. Good posture adds much to your sex appeal as it helps you exude poise and confidence.
As a bonus, you may want to learn how to dance. You don’t have to be an exceptional dancer, but knowing how to move your body to the beats of a song will make any woman find you appealing. Also, wearing some lip balm to mask dry lips or just for show can do a lot to entice women. This will make women around you think of your lips as kissable which adds a lot to your sex appeal.

Kachikwu Promises Fuel Scarcity Will End By April 7, Explains How He Will End It

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ibe Kachikwu announced that fuel lines will end by April 7th, amid significant public pressure. He made the announcement after apologizing for his “magician” comment and proceeded to explain the country’s fuel scarcity.

The minister cited “old and dilapidated” refineries in Nigeria as the major source of fuel scarcity. He maintained that they will be “revived to full capacity” with appropriate funding. Mr. Kachikwu added that the government will be seeking the services of consultants to assist in the revitalization and management of Nigeria’s refineries.
However, even if Nigeria’s refineries were operating at full capacity, Mr. Kachikwu said that they would still fail to meet local demand.
“The design of the Nigerian refineries was such that the component of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) versus other products was almost a 50/50 percent relationship. Most world refineries now provide PMS at about a 70 to 80 percent ratio,” he explained.
In order to remedy this, the government will utilize other sources of refining petrol and will depend on private refineries, such as Dangote refinery.
Mr. Kachikwu stated that Nigerian refineries perform poorly due to fraud and lack of maintenance.
“Over the last 10 to 15 years, we have not done a serious, conclusive turn around maintenance of these refineries; the refineries are on average 30 to 40 years old,” he explained.
“We have also had issues of fraud. It got to a point where I started wondering whether as we repair this, somebody was going out there to destroy it, so that contracting will be done.”
Despite these problems, Mr. Kachikwu is confident that fuel lines will end by April 7.
“We expect that between now and about the 6th or 7th of April, the fuel queues will disappear, the Direct Sale-Direct Purchase system will begin and the foreign exchange allocation [of petrol] will see us smoothly through the track,” he said.

Hackers Shut Down 20 Angolan Government Websites

Hackers have shut down about 20 Angolan government websites after 17 young activists were arrested for allegedly plotting a rebellion against President Jose Eduardo dos Santos’ government.
Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos
The websites were hacked by a Portuguese branch of Anonymous, an international hacking group. The group provided a list of the sites it had taken down on Facebook. At the time of reporting, many of the websites were still down.
The 17 youths arrested, including Angolan rapper Luaty Beirao, were sentenced to between two and eight-and-a-half years in prison.
Human rights groups have criticized the harsh sentences for the activists, who were arrested in June after discussing a book about non-violent resistance. The accused maintain that they are peaceful protestors merely calling on their president to step down.
Mr. dos Santos has ruled Angola since 1979.

Chibok Girls Not Missing – Governor Fayose

The governor said the report was politically motivated to influence public opinion against the Goodluck Jonathan  administration ahead of the 2015 general elections.
Fayose spoke while declaring open a two-day workshop on “Political Aspirants Capacity Enhancement” organised by Women Arise for Change Initiative. It was organised for  women from Ekiti, Osun and Ondo states.
He  said, “Today, many opposition leaders are underground. I don’t think any of these girls is missing; it is a political strategy. Who is fooling who? If you wanted to use it to remove some people, you have succeeded already.
“I don’t know if there are missing girls but no indication has shown that. It is a political strategy,  because I don’t think any girl is missing. If they are missing, let them find them.”
The governor  also took a swipe at #BringBackOurGirls campaigners, saying some of them are using it to look for appointments.
He lamented that  human rights groups had decided  to keep  quite since  President Muhammadu Buhari came on  board.
Fayose said, “I’m concerned about the activities of human rights groups. Today the government of the day is obeying court order of their choice, while human rights are not respected.
“We must talk about government providing cover for criminals. You are now using that person to harass innocent person. You will never have peace when you hide justice.”
He added, “Police came into town yesterday (Tuesday)  to  arrest political opponents. If you like, demonise me, I will demonise you. I don’t need the police and the SSS (Department of State Services) to walk in my state. It is when you are not popular that you walk with police.
“Any government that rises against me, that government will come down. I’m Peter the rock. By engaging me, you make me more popular and relevant and then court sympathy. I’m one person that is going places. That is why all these challenges are against me.”
The governor urged women seeking elective offices to be loyal to their husbands.
The President of the initiative, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, said the objective of the workshop was to enhance women political participation and their inclusion in decision making process by promoting female political aspirants and appointees. She said it was to encourage a more massive political mobilisation of women.
She lamented that Nigerian women had not fully involved themselves in politics,  despite the constitutional provisions giving  them rights to political participation.

4 signs you are a difficult hotel guest

You may know how to ask hotel staff for things, how much to tip, how to book, when to push your cause and when definitely not to, but while these are key things that are supposed to mark you out as a good guest, there is a chance that when you look around at all faces in the hotel, you find that everyone around has an unhappy expression aimed in your direction. This may be due to an unconsciously misspoken word or wrong body language but the good  thing is that you can turn the tide in your favour.
To help get your act together, Jovago.com, Africa’s No.1 online hotel booking site share 4 signs that show you are a difficult lodger.
D205_68_004_0004_600
The hotel staff avoids you
If the front desk officer always puts you on hold or the hotel staff is never enthusiastic about completing your requests, it is sure-fire sign that you are a difficult staff. No matter how ill-trained the hotel staff is, one thing they never fail to do is meet the demands of the lodger, so if they avoid that you, the lodger or completely flaunt your requests without much apologies, it is usually because the you are quite difficult to please, you are unreasonable and they are tired of being hounded by him.
You are always complaining about compensation
Nobody loves a complainer, especially not the hotel staff. If you complain and raise your voice at about almost everyone and everything- from room service to state of amenities, and you rant about compensations due to you, you certainly are on your way to the hotel’s black book.  Rather than scream out loud and seek atte`ntion, just ask whom you should speak with to have any problem solved.
While everyone loves freebies, the desire and demand for them at the moment can be a huge problem. Continually demanding for free bits from the hotel is a sure way of getting yourself being marked out as difficult.
hot
You break rules and never tip
Every traveller understands the importance of tipping as though life depends on it. However, the most difficult of lodgers are the types who never tip! No matter the number of errands run by the local junior stuff in the hotel they never gift them or appreciate them .They do not understand why they need to tip these workers when they have paid a fee for their services. As a result, they fail to get favors from these staff. Also, they refuse to follow the basic rules laid down by the hotel. For instance, they smoke in rooms with signs that indicate that smoking is prohibited.
You get a formal notice to leave
This is the most tangible sign. Most lodgers believe that the moment they pay for a hotel, they cannot be asked/forced to leave or be evicted. They start to misbehave and do things that are not just detrimental to him but the hotel as well. Unfortunately for these breed of people, they eventually get served a formal (although pleasantly worded) letter asking them to leave the hotel, refunds for their lodge made to them accordingly.
