Farmers/Herdsmen Clashes: Senate Moves To Establish Special Force

The Senate will in a few days, deliberate on a report for a bill to establish a National Unity and Peace Corps that would tackle clashes between farmers and herdsmen.

A bill for an act to establish National Unity and Peace Corps to uphold and Impact the Attributes of National Ethics for Restitution”, went through a public hearing yesterday.

The Acting Chairman of the Committee on Interior, Sen. Bayero Usman Nafada(Gombe- APC), presided over the public hearing.
The said Bill intends to empower the establishment to mediate in the raging and incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen across the country.

The Bill when passed into law, will also strengthen the Unity Corps to mediate in communal skirmishes and battle against several social ills and other root causes of cultism and anti-social behaviour in the country, Sen. Nafada said yesterday.

The troubling and burning issue of rampaging herdsmen, has become a major security issue in the country, leading to a proposal by the Federal Government to create grazing reserves in states to end the problem.

Only on Tuesday, the Senate was rocked by a discussion on the matter, which was brought up by Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe a PDP lawmaker from Abia State.

Abaribe had told the Senate that the necessity or otherwise of the routes, was causing agitation in his senatorial district, as he called on the Senate to address the matter.

However, the debate on how to tackle the vexed issue, continues to rage, posing a greater risk to Agriculture and other sectors of the economy.

The Senate is expected to resume next week and consider the report of a Public Hearing on the Bill to establish the agency.

Embedded in the Bill is also a proposal for the creation of a National Peace Corps for the country, to promote peace and security in the secondary schools, among other things.

8 Reasons Why Tiwa Savage Is And Will Remain Queen

For sometime now, there has been a lot of unwarranted debate about who truly is the queen of music in the Nigerian music industry? Several names cropped up with one or two unforgiving and downright rude reason having them being plucked off until the list finally became so light there were two left.

Now for me, for years now, I had absolutely no doubt who is queen and would for a long while sit and laugh when people start the argument, not because I did not love this person so much to want to fight for her, but because, it was mere waste of valuable time to argue with people who knew little or nothing about MUSIC and were just color and stupidity blinded by one hit song of the contender.

Many things, yes, are debatable in life, but I dare say, Tiwa Savage’s Star power, is not one of them.

So guys, here are eight reason why
Tiwa Savage Is QUEEN and Will forever be hailed as one. They are in no particular order.

1. Killer Voice:
Yes, there are other female singers, who are vocal power houses, Tiwa is one of them. Her ability to start and maintain her vocal stability on most songs that she has graciously blessed fans with is amazing. The timbre and tone of her silky voice i dare say is one of the major reasons are songs top charts. Tiwa is actually one of a kind with her voice, which can take you from a depressed sad mood to a happy, laughing mood and finally place you in the turnt up part of it all.

2. Triple Treat: Yes, its indisputable, she is a wonderful singer, Dancer and actress. How many people will tell me Tiwa dancing the shoki dance isn’t like the most adorable thing ever. Seen her in Shuga…mama gat some Jhud, Beyonce and even Brandy vibes in her.

3. Net Worth:
As at 2015, Tiwa’s net worth was about $4.85 million, and with her endorsement deals with MTN, PepsiForte Oil, Nestle Maggi, and most recently pampers, I am certain she should be worth more than that by now. “If you wan retire make you come collect your pension”.

4. Living large:
Yes, she is the first female artistes to jet out to a whole new country, all expense paid in a private jet. After her, others came. I mean, when the power is there, what more?

5. Multi Million Naira Wardrobe:
From her jetting around the globe attending one fashion event to the other, to actually donning expensive designer outfits or being gifted with branded designers items, mama is living the life!

6. Va Va Voom:
Before she had her son, Tiwa’s body was one of the most talked about body in the music industry, then she had her son, and then came the baby weight that only made this hot mama, bootylicious..

7. She makes ratchet classy:
Seen her standing ovation video? Ratchet was the word, but not only did she own that look, Tiwa made it more appealing for female artistes and fans. ‘When the boss dey yan, you gat to pay all your attention….’

8. Humility:
I have come across so many people who have recounted just how humble this beautiful mama is. Yes, her humility even with all her achievements, awards and all is beyond surprising and this can only make one love her more.

Tiwa is queen, so bow down beeshes!!!!!
Have other reasons that makes Tiwa Queen, please drop it in the comment box for our next post.

2016 Earth Day: Plant a tree, stakeholders urged

As the world marks this year’s Earth Day on Friday 22 April, government at all levels as well as private individuals and organisations have been urged to vigorously pursue tree-planting initiatives so as to check the myriad of environmental challenges.
Concerned environmental experts made the call in separate interviews while commenting on the annual event which is marked on April 22 as coordinated by the Earth Day Network to draw global attention to the protection of the environment.
The 2016 Mother Earth Day , which is expected to be celebrated in 193 countries, is significant as it is coming shortly after the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, France, which produced a widely accepted agreement.
This year’s celebration is also unique as the landmark Paris Agreement is scheduled to be signed by the United States, China, and 150 other countries.
The ceremony satisfies a key requirement for the coming into force of the historic climate protection treaty adopted by consensus of the 195 nations that attended the conference in Paris.
An environmentalist, Prof. Olukayode Oladipo, explains the essence of the celebration as it applies to Nigeria.
He said: “The Mother Earth Day is meant to make people be aware of the need to take care of the earth without which we will all be gone. It is a day when more than one billion people celebrate the earth and a lot of activities are normally planned by each country, individuals, corporations or organisations.
“Some decide to clean up areas that have been polluted. All efforts are to make sure that the earth upon which all of us depend, is protected so that it can protect us. Every Nigeria should plant at least a tree. That is one way that we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is causing the type of excessive heat.”
The theme for the celebration, “Tree for life”, seeks to get governments across the world, public and private sectors, non-governmental organisations as well as public-spirited individuals, to intensify tree-planting efforts, in order to meet the goal of 7.8 billion trees within the next five years, when the Mother Earth Day would clock 50 years.
A cross-section of government officials and environmental advocates wants all stakeholders not only to embark on aggressive tree-planting but also to preserve the nation’s remaining forest reserves because, according to them, trees help to clean up the atmosphere and sustain life.
“If 155 Nigerians should each plant a tree, we can be sure that our goal of creating a green environment free of pollution, erosion and other natural disasters will be achieved. Trees help the planet by taking carbon dioxide into animal food and give out oxygen for humans to breath. Planting tree is the best,” added Prof. Oladipo.
To tackle desertification, which is reported to be affecting about 33 per cent of Nigeria’s land mass, as well as to key into global afforestation programmes, including the Billion Tree Campaign by the United Nations Environment Programme in 2006, the authorities have launched various tree-planting initiatives in the country.
These include the “Eko Green Dream Initiative” aimed at planting 6,000 trees in three Local Government Areas in Lagos State and “The plant a million trees 2020” by the African Centre for Environmental Protection.
Nigeria is also pursuing the Great Green Wall (GGW) programme that is creating a wall of trees along the desert front-line states in the North to check further encroachment of the Sahara Desert down South and recover land already destroyed by the phenomenon.
Desk Officer for the GGW in Kano State, Alhaji Garba Sale, who is a tree-planting campaigner, explains the benefits of the programme for the country.
“The wall itself is a plantation of trees that is 7,500 kilometres long and 15 kilometres wide, which runs across the sub-Saharan Africa. It enters the country from Kebbi State passing through 11 desert-prone states. It is a programme that has the socio-economic benefit for the country, the environment and the general public,” he said.
Many Nigerians believe that the idea of tree-planting has not yielded the desired result which is buttressed by the fact that the nation has not been able to replace its trees the way they were at independence decades ago.
According to them, tree-planting has been sabotaged by factors such as discontinuity in government policies, the ignorance on the part of the people on the importance of trees, as well as the heavy use of land for physical development at the expense of the provision of green areas.
The loss of tree covers has been blamed for most of the nation’s environmental problems, such as global warming, erosion, increase in the number of diseases and the reduction of life expectancy which currently stands at about 40 in the country.
An environmentalist, Desmond Majekodunmi, says that in order to protect future generations, the way to go is “tree-planting”.
His words: “What we need now is to plant trees, a lot of trees which will absorb the carbon dioxide and keep us alive. The whole essence of human existence is under threat by climate change due to too much carbon dioxide we introduced by yourselves. We have to come to the realisation that this is a serious issue and we have to avoid the crisis from growing worse. That is the best legacy we can leave behind for the coming generation.”
Humanity derives immense benefits from trees such as absorbing excess carbon dioxide, which destroys the atmosphere and causes global warming. Trees also make the air clean for people to breathe while also helping communities to achieve long-term economic and environmental sustainability by providing them with food, energy and income.

Bus driver sentenced to death for stealing N68,000

A Makurdi High Court presided over by Justice Iorhemen Hwande has sentenced a bus driver, Tanko Inalegwu, to death by hanging for robbing his passengers of the sum of N68,000 at gun point.

Justice Hwande, in his ruling held that the prosecution proved before the court that the convict had on October 10th., 2013 conspired with others, now at large to rob their victims of various sums of money totalling N68,000.

He stated that the convict and his gang had conspired and pretended to be passengers in the commercial vehicles only to rob the unsuspecting victims at the old Customs House, North Bank, Makurdi after which they pushed out the three victims from the moving vehicle.

He maintained that the evidence tendered before the court showed clearly that the convict was a key player in the robbery contrary to his claim before the court.

Justice Hwande said the the confessional statement of the convict which was made to the Police provided enough ground for the verdict of the court and his conviction.

He held that the court was not convinced by the denial of the convict that he gave the confessional statement after being tortured by the police.

He stated that the witnesses called by the prosecutor convinced the court of the culpability of the convict who actually conspired with others to rob their innocent victims.

President Buhari still says NO to Naira Devaluation

Pres Buhari

Abuja, April 22, 2016 (NAN) President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said he was yet to be convinced that the vast majority of ordinary Nigerians would derive any tangible benefit from devaluation of the Naira.
The president said this at a meeting with members of the Council of Retired Federal Permanent Secretaries in Abuja.
He said that he still held the conviction which motivated his principled resistance to devaluation in his first tenure as head of state.
“When I was military head of state, the IMF and the World Bank wanted us devalue the Naira and remove petrol subsidy but I stood my grounds for the good of Nigeria.
The Naira remained strong against the dollar and other foreign currencies until I was removed from office in August, 1985 and it was devalued.
But how many factories were built and how many jobs were created by the devaluation?
That is why I’m still asking to be convinced today on the benefits of devaluation,” he said.
Buhari welcomed the council’s pledge of support for the successful implementation of his administration’s change agenda, especially in the priority areas of improving security, curbing corruption and revitalising the national economy.
“I am glad you have rightly identified the key issues we campaigned on.”
“We need a dynamic bureaucracy which will not mislead us into taking wrong decisions,” he added.
The Pioneer Chairman of the council, Chief Philip Asiodu, expressed the readiness of members of the council to assist in ensuring the success of Buhari-led administration.
“We are non-partisan. The interest of Nigeria is paramount to us and we are anxious that you should succeed,” Asiodu said.
The Council of Retired Federal Permanent Secretaries was established in 2004 to serve as a platform for retired permanent secretaries to offer constructive advice to government on key policy issues. (NAN)

NNPC denies Kachikwu's sack

According to Business Day in a tweet via their official Twitter handle, his position has been taken over by Maikanti Baru but he will however retain his position as Minister of State for petroleum.

The tweet was deleted minutes after but not before we were able to take a screen shot.

However, Premium Times reports that the NNPC has described as “completely false” the widely circulated report that Kachikwu, has been relieved of his job by President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the report, the Minister of State for Petroleum is still carrying out his duties as assigned to him by the president.
Speaking to the media outfit in a telephone interview, Garba-deen Mohammed, the group general manager, public affairs division of the NNPC, said the news is untrue.

Mohammed said : “The story is completely false. It should be ignored by all Nigerians.
“The minister is currently in his office and has continued to function in the roles assigned to him by the president.”

A look on the website of the NNPC shows that the bio-data and photograph of Kachikwu still remains intact.
