4 signs you are a true Lagosian

Lagos is, without a doubt, the most popular city in Nigeria and possibly Africa. Not only is it cosmopolitan and all-encompassing, it offers countless opportunities to its inhabitants as well as visitors. The city literally adopts thousands of new residents each year and so it has become a daunting task identifying who the real Lagosians are.

Let’s face it, while you may need to have spent a reasonable time living in Lagos, you do not have to be an indigene of the state to be considered a proper Lagosian. There are certain signs that generally suggests that you have shed your “newbie” status and you are officially a true “son of the soil”. Jovago.com, Africa’s No.1 online hotel booking portal lists five of these signs.

You do not refer to the state as “Lagos”

Real Lagosians do not refer to the city as ‘Lagos’, a majority use the term “Eko” while the young and trendy use the term “Lasgidi”. If you hear any real Lagosian make reference to “Lagos”, they are most likely talking about the Victoria Island part of the State.

You are always vigilant and in a hurry

Real Lagosians understand the need to always stay sharp and move fast, and it has become second nature to them. You will never catch a true Lagosian keeping his or her things carelessly in public places or walking sluggishly on the streets, especially crowded streets.

The term “owambe” brings you joy

Lagosians love to party and so they find opportunities to make merry. Weekends are basically set aside for owambes…even if Friday nights are spent in one of the many nightclubs and lounges around the city.

You can walk, eat, talk on the phone and hop on a bus, all at the same time

This happens all the time in Lagos. Every true Lagosian operates with the mantra ‘time waits for no man’, so they have learnt tricks and ways to juggle different activities at the same time.

5 keywords Nigerians should avoid in emails

Like the rest of the world, Nigerians have replaced hard-copy memos and letters with e-mails. The average person would rather send an email -whether personal or for official purposes- than type it out on paper. Unfortunately, emails can make things go horribly wrong as certain words used can come off as haughty when the original intent was probably to sound proactive, efficient or even  likable.

Communicating via email does not take away the need to stay careful in the choice of words as certain terms or words with meanings that can easily be identified when said in person- based on the speaker’s facial expression and tone- may sound completely different when used in emails. For Nigerians who are not conversant with some of these dicey words, Jovago.com, Africa’s No.1 online hotel booking portal reveals the five most common.

Sorry

This is the word commonly used to show remorse or regret, however, the word has been so overused that it is no longer taken seriously. In fact, some people consider it non-genuine and hardly acknowledge it. If you need to apologize when you have done something wrong, rather than say “sorry”, use a phrase like "I apologize". “I apologize, it totally slipped my mind”  looks a lot better than “Sorry, I forgot!”

No

In a normal conversation, you can easily say something like: “No, it belongs to the company” with a soft tone that implies you are not being judgmental or acting superior. However, in an e-mail, the “No” can make the same statement sound even condemnatory. Using the word “No” in an email can be very dicey, so it is best to just omit it and stick with the compliers.

Actually

Commonly used as sentence starters or transitional words in everyday communication, “Actually” can actually come off as condescending, as though you intend to correct someone or an idea. For instance, you could reply an email with the sentence: “Actually, I have to leave work by 5pm today” and It would sound extremely rude and combative. Actually has a way of turning a simple response into an awful one. Instead, use alternative

Thanks

“Thanks” is something almost everyone writes at the end of an email, especially when we are in a rush, however, the expression -which is a short form of “thank you”- is often considered sarcastic or unprofessional, especially when used in official situations. It is important to always use the full form of the phrase when writing e-mails.

Need

The word “need” almost always comes off strong. Most times, using the word suggests that you place yourself in a position of authority, superior to the person receiving the message. Also, it sounds demanding. It may be preferable to use phrases like “I would like...”

£2m Wristwatches Seized From Diezani, Omokore’s Wife-EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said it seized wristwatches worth £2m from the wife of the Chairman of Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Limited, Mr. Jide Omokore, and a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The anti-graft agency seized a wristwatch worth £1.4m from Omokore’s wife, while a wristwatch worth £600,000 was seized from Alison-Madueke, a source at the agency told one of our correspondents.
The source said the agency seized expensive jewellery and the wristwatches during various raids on houses of some suspects on Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos, and other places.
The source added that the items seized from the suspects would be displayed to journalists in Nigeria.
The firm of Omokore, who was quizzed in January by the commission, was one of the companies that allegedly received multi-billion dollars worth of public assets without due process from the Jonathan administration.
The company, which was established in 2010, had reportedly not explored any oil when it was curiously awarded controlling stakes in two lucrative oil blocks, OML 30 and 34, for just over $50m each.
The deal, which was signed by Jonathan’s Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, gave Atlantic Energy Limited a controlling 55 per cent stake
The former minister had been interrogated by the Metropolitan Police on issues relating to money laundering.
The EFCC source said the commission had started analysing information on Nigerians, including the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and others mentioned in the Panama Paper leaks.
It was gathered that the commission had seized one hospital equipment known as MRI, Medical Resonance Image, from a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (retd). The equipment is worth N2.6bn.
The EFCC had previously recovered over N2.3bn cash from Amosu, while properties worth over N1bn had been seized from him.

Fire Rages At Kano Kurmi Market

The fire, which began at about 10:30pm, started after the market closed for the day’s commercial activities.
Kurmi market is the oldest market in Kano, dating back about 1,000 years, and was hub for trans-Saharan trade.
Fire service personnel have responded to the incident, according to sources at the scene.
State radio stations announced the fire to citizens and requested that Samaritans assist fire services extinguish the blaze.

CCT trial: You have no powers to try me – Saraki dares Tribunal judge

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Wednesday said the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Danladi Umar has no right to preside over his ongoing trial.
Saraki is currently standing trial at the tribunal for false declaration of assets.
The Senate President through his counsel, Raphael Oluyede informed the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, of a pending application filed on April 19, 2016, seeking the Chairman of the tribunal, Danladi Umar to disqualify himself from conducting the trials, citing likelihood of bias.
Oluyede alleged that there was a likelihood of bias on the part of Umar who was investigated for corruption to the tune of N10m by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, as was directed by the then Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke, adding that the same EFCC is the prosecution in the current matter involving his client who is the Senate President.
He claimed that Umar admitted to the anti-graft agency that he met with an accused person privately in his chambers, thereby raising doubt over his credibility to try this case.
Oluyede contended that the anti-graft agency in various letters alleged to have cleared the CCT Chairman do not completely clear him, saying “this evokes a cloud and we do not know what is behind it. We submit that the continued sitting of Umar on the panel removes the guarantee that the tribunal trying an accused person will act independently or impartially.”
On these grounds, Oluyede urged the tribunal to grant “the relieve sought in this application in the interest of justice.”
But counsel to the EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs contended that the tribunal Chairman had the right to preside over the matter, stressing that Umar has not being tried in any court or being convicted before. He added that there is no evidence to show that Umar was still being investigated by the anti-graft agency.
He said, “Your Lordship has not being tried, convicted by any court, investigation is investigation.
“Even if he is under investigation, he can still continue with his duty. The defendant in this case despite being charged to court is still carrying out his duty as a senator.”
Jacobs argued that Oluyede was not a counsel on record when he brought up the application before the tribunal.
Citing Section 349(7)Administration of Criminal Justice Act, Jacobs argued that only the lead counsel can represent an accused person from commencement to the end of a trial, adding that a 3-day notice must be given.
He maintained that if the tribunal should consider the application of Saraki, it “means whenever a judge is accused , he should not sit over the matter which is not right.”
Jacobs also stated that EFCC had concluded its investigation on the alleged corruption charge against the tribunal Chairman since 2015, stressing that the anti-graft agency in a letter to the then Attorney General of the Federation dated 24 June 2014 never indicted or recommended that the tribunal Chairman be prosecuted contrary to the argument of Saraki’s counsel.
Jacobs while urging the tribunal to dismissed the application which he claimed is “frivolous” said it’s meant to “harass and disgrace the tribunal Chairman.”
Proceedings is still ongoing.
