“Change not instant coffee,” Lai Mohammed tells Nigerians

The Nigerian government on Thursday asked Nigerians to be hopeful of a better future, saying a “long suffering” people always enjoy enduring prosperity afterwards.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, gave the message of hope at a meeting with members of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) ahead of the one year anniversary of the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
“In the words of Henry David Thoreau, all misfortune is but a stepping stone to fortune,” the minister said.
“Change is no instant coffee, it is a process. We are now laying a solid foundation for our country.
“The road will be rough, but as the saying goes, the darker the night, the brighter the morning. Our long suffering people will surely smile again.” he said.
Mr. Mohammed also praised Nigerians for their “support, endurance and perseverance.’’
The meeting with BON was attended by four other ministers who spoke on the achievements and challenges in their ministries and interacted with those in attendance.
They are Ministers of FCT, Mohammed Bello; Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola; and Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah.
Mr. Mohammed appreciated the unprecedented trust Nigerians reposed in the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari to steer the ship of state to safe shores.
He acknowledged that the nation was passing through a very difficult situation with the loss of more than 60 per cent of national income due to the crash in the price of crude oil.
The minister assured citizens that the government would deliver on its election campaign promises to Nigerians.
“This administration is aware that it was not elected to make excuses, but to put the nation back on a sound economic footing, ensure the security of lives and property and banish corruption.
“We have therefore decided to turn the disaster that we inherited into a blessing by diversifying our economy away from the mono-product of oil, leveraging on agriculture, solid minerals as well as culture and tourism, among others.
The minister reassured Nigerians that the change promised was real, in spite of the tough situation of the moment.
Mr. Mohammed stressed that if the government had not been elected, there would have been no economy in the country.
On the scorecard of the administration in the past one year, Mr. Mohammed said significant achievements were recorded in security, economy and the fight against corruption. (NAN)

Pope Francis prays for over 150 victims of Syria terror attacks

Pope Francis has asked God to 'convert the hearts of those who sow death and destruction' following a series of deadly attacks by the Islamic State group (ISIS) in Syria.
While speaking during his weekly audience in St Peter's Square, on Wednesday, May 25, the pontiff prayed for "eternal rest to the victims" and "consolation to their relatives" after suicide attacks in the regime's coastal heartland that killed more than 150 people on Monday.
Francis said almost all the victims of the seven explosions targeting bus stations, hospitals and other civilian sites in the seaside cities of Jableh and Tartus were "unarmed civilians". Eight of them were children.
"It is the duty of everyone to protect children, most of all those exposed to a high risk of exploitation, trafficking and deviant behaviours," He added, "prayer is not a magic wand," it is our daily bread, our powerful weapon and the staff for our journey."
"We pray in this Mass, for the victims of this cruelty - so many of them - we pray also for the perpetrators of such cruelty, that the Lord might change their hearts,"
On Monday, a series of seven deadly coordinated blasts targeted Syrian cities of Tartus and Jableh killing over 150 people including children. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Buhari to commence two-day working visit to Lagos on Monday

President Muhammadu Buhari will be embarking on a two-day working visit to Lagos starting from Monday, May 23, 2016, during which he is expected to commission several projects.
This was confirmed by the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode who tweeted that: “@NGRPresident going to Lagos on a two-day official visit starting from May 23”
The office of the Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, Mr Steve Ayorinde had disclosed this to CKN News, adding that Buhari will also use the visit to have a one-on-one discussion with captains of industries.

The government spokesman stated that there will be some road diversion in the course of the visit and urged Lagosians to bear with law enforcement agents and traffic control authorities who will effect road diversions in some routes that the President’s motorcade will pass through during the visit.
He added that Lagosians are looking forward with excitement to receive the President in the state.

Grazing reserves for Fulani herdsmen will lead to another civil war – Anglican Church warns Buhari

Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev’d (Dr) Nicholas Okoh has called on the Federal Government to scrap the proposed grazing reserves for herdsmen.

Reading out the resolutions of the Diocese of Abuja Synod yesterday, the Primate warned that such decision would lead to a civil war.
He stressed that establishing grazing sites across the country would give herdsmen “unwarranted special preference” and make them automatic indigenes of all the regions of the country.
Okoh said, “The synod hereby states unequivocally that the move to create grazing reserves for Fulani herdsmen around the country does not have our support. This is because the move treats a set of people with unwarranted special preference, making them indigenes of all regions of the country.
Hide quoted text

“There have been countless isolated cases of herdsmen brutality to their host communities. These notorious activities of herdsmen are capable of dragging the country into another civil war. The Fulani herdsmen are private businessmen who take away all proceeds of the business, not sharing with either their host communities or the government.

“We wish to re-echo to the Federal Government, states and individuals involved, the recommendation already made earlier, that ranches should be built in their own localities for modern animal husbandry. In some parts of Nigeria, people are already grappling with high population growth and land does not expand. Nobody’s land should therefore be given forcefully given to anybody in any guise.
“The synod calls on the National Assembly to drop the bill on grazing reserves as it is only heating up the polity and will do no good to the herdsmen, their host communities or the government.”

She said, “I was at the Redemption Camp and Daddy G. O (Pastor Enoch Adeboye) asked those who wanted to give their lives to Christ to come out, so I stepped forward and that was how my conversion started, just like that.
“My mother was a Christian why my father was a Muslim but they did not force me to pick a religion, I decided on my own.

Buhari didn’t receive rescued Chibok girl, Amina Ali with her Boko Haram husband – Presidency

The Presidency has refuted reports that President Muhammadu Buhari received at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the rescued Chibok girl, Amina Ali alongside the suspected Boko Haram member claiming to be her husband.

This message was posted on the official Facebook page of the Presidency, Aso Rock Villa, on Friday.
According to the message, the man who accompanied Amina to meet Buhari was her brother and not her supposed husband, who is an alleged Boko Haram commander.

The message reads, “Our attention has been drawn to rumours and insinuations that the young man who accompanied Amina Ali to the State House to meet President Buhari is her alleged terrorist abductor.

“This is false; there is absolutely no truth to it. The young man who was in the State House alongside Amina and her baby and mother is her older brother.

“He is different from the man who appeared with her in photos released by the Nigerian military, in the immediate aftermath of Amina’s rescue.

“All insinuations alleging otherwise are false, mischievous, and should be wholly disregarded.

“Under no circumstances will a presidential welcome be extended to terrorists or abductors.”

Tinubu Appeals to NLC to Shelve Strike

All Progressive Congress (APC)’s National Leader,
Bola Tinubu , has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to shelve the ongoing nationwide strike over increase in fuel pump price in the country.
Tinubu said this when he led a delegation on a visit to the leadership of the NLC on Friday in Abuja.
He said that it was important for the NLC to call off the ongoing strike and return to the negotiating table.
“I cannot say I was not a part of what is happening today on your side and I cannot say I was not a part of the decision that created this. I can only say I noticed the communication gap; I cannot say that you are enemies of progress or the president of this country.
What I want to say is for you to get back a little bit, even though we are aware of the division; it is just politics and there is always a conflict resolution system. Today, we are here to appeal to you, so that we can bring this country to a progressive path,” Tinubu said

According to him, the ideology of the present administration is about progressive governance that includes the welfare of the people and progress of a nation.
He noted that the progress being made by present administration depended upon the acceptance of the people.
He said the visit was to assure the NLC that they are not the enemy and would never be the enemy of the present government that is progressive.

“Why should we continue with this same problem? Why must we continue to do the same thing over and over again? this is an expired ideology and will not inspire new thing,” he said. “So, I am here to appeal to you to understand that whatever you are doing no, whatever this government is doing, whatever the President is doing, which involves myself and yourself, is for the good of all.”
He noted that it was through the effort and support of the NLC that the present administration won the election, adding that the present administration wanted to express its success through the change mantra.
“If change is our slogan, we want to keep collaborating and cooperating with making those progressive changes for the benefit of the people. We are trying to educate our children not to suffer the same problem that we suffered; we want to correct their future; we want to guarantee their future. I want to assure you that we will work for the betterment of this country; I also want to bet with you that this government will work and President Buhari will listen,” Tinubu said.
Responding, the NLC President, Ayubu Wabba, said the visit showed that the APC leadership was concerned about the welfare of the citizenry.

Wabba said NLC was open for negotiations on issues that affect the masses.

“The protest is not about fighting government policies but about policy engagement and the approach to it. This message will be communicated to our people and we will get back to you after the NLC National Executive Council meeting,” Wabba said.
Also speaking, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun said that government was concerned about the welfare of the people.

“I want to appeal to you that we are not fighting for a different goal but the same goal which is for the good of the people. Though the techniques might be different, the purpose is the same; please shelve the strike and let us talk,” Aregbesola said.
In a remark, Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi, representing Kaduna North, said the president meant well for all the citizens.
“Mr President is worried about this action and has requested and appealed that you should call off this strike for the good of the Nigerian people,” he added.

We Can’t Access Forex to Pay Our Debts – Oil Marketers tell FG

Oil marketers on Friday in Abuja called on the Federal Government to assist them in making foreign exchange available for the importation of petroleum products.

The marketers, under the umbrella of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DPPMAN), made the plea during a meeting with the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun held at the headquarters of the ministry.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the meeting, chaired by the minister, was attended by Chief Executive Officers of 46 major oil companies in the country.
It was held to discuss salient issues affecting the downstream sector of the petroleum industry.
The Chairman of DAPPMAN, Dapo Abiodun , told the minister that members of the association were currently having a tough time converting some of the Naira payments made by the government to dollars.
He said their inability to convert these payments from the Federal Government from Naira to dollar was making it difficult for them to meet their obligations to their foreign partners.
He said while the oil marketers would continue to do their best in importing petroleum products into the country, the unavailability of foreign exchange might make it challenging to achieve such objective.
NAN recalls that Federal Government had paid the oil marketers N48.2 billion minus Value Added Tax as the arrears of outstanding 2015 subsidy claims.
The amount, according to the Federal Ministry of Finance, is to enable them to import petroleum products and meet up their other financial needs.
Abiodun said except the Central Bank of Nigeria provided foreign exchange to oil marketers, the payment made by the government for fuel imports would continue to sit in their Naira accounts.
“We want to thank you for the recent payment of about N42 billion but we want to emphasise the fact that this Naira payment will continue to sit in our banks. We look forward to dialoguing with you as to how you can help us expedite the sourcing of foreign exchange to liquidate our exposures to our foreign bankers that we have line of credit with.

“We are very worried about going into a new dynamics in which marketers are now going to be sourcing forex at the rate that they can find, which we have approximated to around N285 to a dollar. We believe that it is a quick fix solution to all the epileptic supply of petroleum products in the county.
However, we still have this Naira sitting in our account from previous transactions and we are worried that if anything happens to the rate of exchange officially, we are going to be caught in between. We do not want to come back to you to ask for foreign exchange differentials which issue we still have pending from previous transactions,” he said.

Adeosun said the payment recently released by the government to the oil marketers was one of the liabilities inherited by the current administration.
She said the government would continue to do what it could to ensure availability of petroleum products in the county.
She expressed optimism that the reforms currently being implemented in the oil sector would restore confidence in the market.
