The One Word That Can Kill a Friendship (Must Read)

There’s this word that you probably use all the time. It’s a seemingly harmless word—close to meaningless, really—but it’s slowly, subversively tainting your relationships.
Look back over any recent texts and emails you’ve sent to friends. If they look something like this, you’re caught in this word's trap:

“I’d love to hang out! But I’m really busy.”

“Sorry I didn’t get back to you earlier! I’ve been so busy.”

“What’s going on with me? Just busy as usual!”
You guessed it. The single-word saboteur is busy. It’s stealthily driving your friends away, and it’s time to eliminate it from your social vocabulary.

To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with actually being busy: People can certainly have many obligations and still maintain great relationships. And it’s not being busy that drives people away; it’s the word itself.
Let’s discuss the top three reasons it’s time to be done with “busy”… and three ways to replace it with something better.

1. Everyone is Busy.
These days, saying you’re busy is basically like saying you’re alive. Being busy may once have been an indicator of importance; it may once have implied that many people and projects relied on you. Now, it’s a filler word that can be applied to any situation: You could be 10 years into your job and be “busy.” You could be between jobs and be “busy.” You could be vacationing and be “busy.” The word itself no longer relates to any specific, making it basically meaningless—and meaningless language is a problem for relationships because it doesn’t help other people understand what, specifically, you’re going through. It actually impedes mutual understanding.

2. It’s Open to (Negative) Interpretation.
The vague nature of “I’m really busy” leaves the real reason why you’re being unavailable to a friend open to interpretation. While many people will accept “being busy” as enough of a reason for not hanging out the first few times you use it, eventually friends will see it as a veil over a more sinister reason for staying away: Maybe you don’t like them anymore and are too afraid to say it.
In other words, “busy” allows others to fill in the blank of your true intentions. Often, they will fill that blank with a negative assumption. In a worst-case scenario, friends may feel like your "busy” is a way of blowing them off without having to state a reason for doing so.

3. It’s a “Not Right Now.”
Often, “busy” simply means that you have higher priorities right now than seeing friends—which is totally fine. You may be caring for a child or launching a new product; there are lots of legitimate reasons why friendships fall down one’s list of priorities. The issue is that “ being busy” doesn’t communicate any of that. In a previous post, 5 Phrases That Can Kill a Relationship , I wrote that the phrase “not right now” is a relationship killer because it fosters a feeling of rejection. “Busy” is the friendship equivalent of “not right now.” It lacks a sense of caring about the other person and fosters distance as a result.

3 Better Options
All that being said, just because “busy” is not a word that generates closeness, that doesn’t mean you can’t communicate the same thing in a way that does. Here are some tips for telling your friends you just can’t right now, without hurting their feelings:

1. Be Specific.
There’s an easy way to eliminate the vagueness of “busy” and that’s telling friends specifically what you’re busy doing. Of course, this takes more of your time and effort—something that can be challenging when you’re already really swamped. But it’s worth doing because the difference in how the message is received is significant.
Let’s say you invite a friend to your birthday party and she writes back: “I’d love to but I’m really busy!” But what if she had written: “I’d love to but Jack has a karate competition that evening and he specifically asked me to watch him this time. Have some champagne for me, though!”
Feel the difference? The second message explains your friend’s reasoning, gives context, and communicates that she’s still invested in your
happiness. The first message, frankly, is a blow-off.

2. Set a Time Frame.
If you’re busy because of an especially difficult crunch time either at work or at home, it’s helpful to make your friends aware of just how long this “busy” time will last. For example, if you know your project will wrap up in a month and your schedule will open up soon after, communicate your desire to reconnect with everyone then. Even if that month turns into two, your friends will appreciate that you expressed the desire to be together again as soon as possible.

3. Determine if You Need to Have a Difficult Conversation.
And now, it’s time to confront the dark side of “busy.” As we all know, “being busy” can be a method by which we disengage from a relationship we no longer want to have. The kids call it “ghosting"—distancing yourself from a relationship without ever explaining why. If you’re using “busy” in this way, it’s worth determining if you need to have that difficult conversation with the person you’re ghosting. While it’s always uncomfortable to “break up” with a friend, some friendships deserve this attention. In some cases, it’ll cause great sadness to both parties to “busy” a friendship to death.

Simple ways to stop 7 Habits That Are Not Healthy

Nail biting, knuckle cracking, ice chewing…Those, uh, charming little quirks may seem innocent enough. But habits like these are worth breaking.
Sometimes they’re a sign of something larger, such as stress or anxiety or even a nutritional deficiency .
Sometimes they’re unsanitary and diet-destroying. And other times – sorry – they’re flat-out annoying to those around you. Here’s how to drop these miniature vices.

-Chewing on ice
“Pica” is a condition that causes people to crave and chew non-foods, such as paper and ice. It’s sometimes triggered by nutritional issues like iron-deficiency anemia, according to the National Institutes of Health. Chewing ice could also signal emotional troubles like stress or even obsessive-compulsive disorder. Not to mention: That crunching is likely annoying your nearby co-workers.

How to stop: Make and order your beverages ice-free to avoid temptation. Bring it up with your doctor, too. She can determine if you have a nutritional deficiency, and if so, help you overcome it. If she suspects it’s an anxiety issue, she may recommend cognitive behavioral therapy.

Slouching
When you’re stooped as you stand, or slouched so far down in your seat that you’re nearly falling off, your back muscles and ligaments have to work harder to keep you balanced. This strain on your muscles can lead to back pain, fatigue and headaches , among other issues.

How to stop: Practice makes perfect, and posture is no exception. When standing, check that your shoulders are back and relaxed, your chest is high and your knees are relaxed – not locked. As you sit , aim for both feet to be on the floor, with your hips level with your knees. Make sure your back presses firmly against the chair, and keep your upper back and neck “comfortably straight,” the Mayo Clinic recommends. While sitting and standing straight may seem unnatural and stiff at first, keep at it. It may help to stretch throughout the day or even try core strengthening classes.

Nail biting
Well, it’s not the most sanitary habit. Unless you compulsively wash your hands, the germs that sneak onto your nails every time you type on a keyboard, open a door or pet a dog will likely land in your mouth. If you tend to gnaw at your cuticles, too, you may develop a nail infection , according to the National Institutes of Health. And as is the case with many habits, nail biting could be a sign of emotional problems like stress or anxiety.

How to stop: You have a couple options. Most drugstores sell products that look and work like clear nail polishes, except they have lasting, distinctly bitter tastes to discourage folks from biting. The Mayo Clinic suggests you identify what triggers your nail biting, like boredom, and, well, stop being bored. Chewing on some gum to keep your mouth preoccupied could also help. If you realize you bite your nails whenever you’re anxious, stressed or sad – and you bite your nails often – that might be a cue to see a psychiatrist.
Wearing contact lenses while sleeping
Your risk of an eye infection spikes significantly when you wear your contacts as you sleep. Continually doing so could also deprive your eye tissue of the oxygen it needs, and in some cases, the eye could compensate by creating small blood vessels. Left unchecked, these vessels could cause permanent damage. Even if your eyes don’t develop an infection or form blood vessels, chances are they’ll be red and irritated the next day.

How to stop: Make taking out your lenses part of your daily schedule. Each day, switch into glasses when, for example, you change out of your work clothes, or during a nightly news commercial break. You could also try extended-wear contacts, which are relatively new to the market and safe to wear when sleeping. Ask your optometrist if these are a good fit for you.

Knuckle cracking
Actually, this habit may not be so bad. While your mother may have insisted that knuckle cracking will lead to arthritis , research largely disproves that myth. But consider this: Knuckle cracking is probably not winning you any popularity awards among friends and co-workers. That popping sound of gases escaping your joints may be satisfying to you, but it’s likely driving others crazy.

How to stop: Like someone who’s trying to quit smoking might do, tell your friends and family that you’re trying to stop cracking your knuckles, which will make you feel more accountable for changing your ways. And just as some dieters record what they eat each day, it may be helpful to keep a tally of how many times you crack your knuckles. Then try to slowly cut back.

Late night snacking
Research suggests that it can lower your metabolism. And if you plow through a bag of popcorn during a 10 p.m. movie, your body will need to digest it while you sleep, rather than burning fat. Plus, late-night snacking can wake you up with heartburn – an unpleasant way to throw off your sleep cycle.

How to stop: Think about why you’re eating so late. Are you consuming enough during the day? How filling are your meals, and what does your breakfast look like? It may take some shifting in your daytime eating habits to curb those midnight fridge raids . If you’re trying to slim down, make a point to not eat after dinner – an easier task to accomplish if the day has left you full and satisfied.

Sleeping through your alarm
If you tend to hit snooze one or two or 10 times each morning, you likely end up running late and frazzled before your day has even begun. Plus, trouble waking up is often a sign that you’re not getting enough quality sleep, which can lead to a slew of health problems, from weight gain to high blood pressure.

How to stop: It’s all about getting seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. Pick the time you’d like to actually wake up (not the time you’d like to first hit the snooze button), and count back eight hours. That’s your bedtime. If falling asleep at, say, 10 p.m. seems ridiculous, try going to bed just 15 minutes earlier each night until you reach it. Also, avoid toying with electronics and consuming caffeine before bed.

Wenger asks Gunners to silence critics

Arsene Wenger has challenged his Arsenal stars to silence the critics once and for all by making a sustained challenge for the Premier League title.
Wenger’s side have endured plenty of flak from pundits and even Arsenal fans in recent years after a series of underwhelming attempts to win the title for the first time since 2004.
Those doubters grew even more vocal when the Gunners made a spluttering start to the season, but they have responded with an impressive run which peaked on Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Arsenal return to domestic action when Everton visit the Emirates Stadium on Saturday and Wenger wants another strong performance to convince the cynics that they can last the pace in the title race.
“You gain credibility through consistency and when people think this could be a game where we could slip a bit and you respond in a positive way,” Wenger said.
“It shows that our consistency is questioned by many people which is not based on mathematics and statistics, but more on preconceived ideas and it is down to us to change people’s minds.
“The longer we last (at the top), the more people will give us credit for it.”
Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne is relishing the chance to inspire his first derby victory against Manchester United when the Premier League leaders visit Old Trafford on Sunday.
De Bruyne will experience the hostility and passion of the Manchester derby for the first time following his £55 million ($84 million) move from Wolfsburg in August.
The 24-year-old Belgian has already made a big impact at City and added to his popularity with the stoppage-time goal that clinched a crucial Champions League win against Sevilla on Wednesday.
From the Denis Law flick that effectively relegated United in 1974 all the way through to Mario Balotelli’s unveiling of his “Why Always Me” t-shirt during a 6-1 romp four years ago, City fans have always reserved a special place in their hearts for players who can inflict misery on the old enemy.
Now De Bruyne, who has five goals in nine appearances for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, has set his sights on joining the select group of City stars who have tormented United.
“I am very excited. These are the moments you live for as a player,” De Bruyne said.
“There will be a lot of atmosphere. Great games and derbies are the most important games for the fans. Hopefully we can do good on Sunday.”
– Memorable contribution –
City have won on three of their last four visits to Old Trafford, but they lost 4-2 there last season, a result United surprisingly achieved without a goal from Wayne Rooney.
With 11 career goals in the Manchester derby, Rooney has been a constant menace to City and the United captain, whose brilliant overhead kick to win the derby in 2011, would dearly love to mark his 30th birthday on Saturday with another memorable contribution.
A Rooney-inspired triumph would be especially timely as Louis van Gaal’s team will leapfrog City to the top of the table if they win and Arsenal drop points against Everton.
After a dismal start to their title defence, Chelsea can only look on enviously as their rivals step up their bids to take the trophy from Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are languishing 10 points behind City in 12th place after a campaign scarred by lacklustre displays, rumours of dressing room rifts and outbursts from the increasingly tetchy Jose Mourinho.
Yet Chelsea captain John Terry has seen encouraging signs in the last week following a 2-0 win over Aston Villa and a gritty goalless draw against Dynamo Kiev.
“We are a great side and we will get there with the hunger and the ambition that is in the squad,” Terry said.
On Sunday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will take charge of his first home Premier League match when Southampton visit Anfield.
Sam Allardyce is looking for his first win as Sunderland manager when arch rivals Newcastle make the short trip to the Stadium on Light.
The Black Cats were beaten at West Bromwich Albion in Allardyce’s first game last weekend, but they haven’t lost against Newcastle since 2011.

Buhari To Lead African Union’s Anti-corruption Fight

President Muhammadu Buhari has been unanimously chosen by the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC) to lead in the fight against corruption in the whole of Africa.

This was disclosed in Lagos on Thursday, October 22, by Isa Ozi Salami, a member of the board of the organization.
Salami made the disclosure during the formal launch of Nigeria’s foremost association of publishers of online newspapers, the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).

Salami had represented Ekpo Nta, the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences (ICPC) at the launch.
He said that President Buhari was the adopted and preferred one during the last AUABC meeting held in Arusha, Tanzania to be saddled with the responsibility to lead a tough anti-corruption campaign
The Nta representative who was elected to the board of the organisation last year said: “At the second meeting of the board of AUABC in Arusha, Tanzania, the headquarters of the board, we resolved that on corruption in Africa, we needed to adopt a champion for salvaging the continent from the evils of corruption
“And President Muhammadu Buhari was the person we unanimously endorsed for that purpose.”
L-R: Director General, Dept Management office, Dr. Abraham Nwankwo, Member, House of Representative, Hon. Abdulrasaq Namdas, Special Adviser on Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr Femi Adesina and President, Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, Chief Ajibola Ogunshola, Chairman of the launch committee, Chijama Ogbu during the Launch of Guild of Corporate Online Publishers held at the Eko Hotels in Lagos.
Speaking further, Salami said that the endorsement of Buhari for such important continent-wide campaign had far reaching implications which among other things, showed that Africa was beginning to reckon with the Nigerian leader in his renewed fight against corruption in his own country.
He also noted that indeed Nigeria was again returning to her leadership position on the continent with the endorsement of President Buhari in the African Union’s anti-corruption fight.
He said: “It means that Africa is beginning to give Nigeria its right leadership status and respecting Nigeria for the efforts our new leadership on anti-graft crusade.”

The AUABC is an autonomous organ established within the African Union (AU) in terms of Article 22 of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption.

Suspect pleads guilty on Kuje, Nyanya bombing charge

Five persons were yesterday paraded at the premises of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and later arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja for allegedly masterminding the twin bomb blasts in Kuje and Nyanya on October2, 2015.
There was a mild drama at the court as one of the suspects, Abdulwaheed Nasiru, pleaded guilty. Nasiru, who was arrested alongside other accused persons behind Military Cemetery along Airport Road in Abuja on October 6 pleaded guilty, and told the court that he had in his possession materials used for making Improvised Explosive Devices and 12 already made ones.
The accused, who was the fourth in the charges, had, along with the fifth accused person, Abdullahi Nasiru, pleaded with the court to allow the charges to be interpreted to them in Pidgin English. He was repeatedly asked if he understood the charges and he maintained that he was guilty. The others identified as Abdulazeez Muhazab, Ishaka Salihu and Mohammed Jimoh, however, pleaded not guilty.
Justice Abdukadir Abdulkafarati ordered the accused persons to be moved from police custody to prison.
Earlier, while parading the suspects, Police said the SARS, working on a tip-off, led a joint operation and arrested the suspects at  separate locations, in Karmajiji and Iddo, both off Umar Musa Yar’Adua Expressway commonly called Airport Road in Abuja, and in a Dan Asato village in Suleja, Niger State.
The suspects, who were all from Okene in Kogi State, were paraded along with different bomb making equipment and agents, empty tins of canned drinks, a laptop, and textbooks on fundamentals of engineering and engineering materials properties and selection, among others.
Later in his office, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, confirmed that “after careful and discreet investigations into the recent bombings that took place in some parts of Abuja, the Nigeria Police Force will on October 22, 2015(later yesterday) take the suspects to the Federal High Court, Abuja for prosecution.”
The IGP said the arrest of the suspects was made possible by what he described as proactive nature of the newly formed Intelligence Response Team. He urged Nigerians to avoid the temptation of picking 1-pad, phones or laptops not kept by them, as terrorists now use these items in manufacturing bombs, knowing their attractions and need to the people.
Meanwhile the IGP has directed that all policemen serving as escorts, mostly to financial institutions, should stop wearing uniforms as from 1st January 2016 as a special uniform is being designed for them.
The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olabisi Kolawole, said the directive to companies using Supernumerary Police (SPY) nationwide to stop the use of police uniform for their operations was given as part of the new measures to strengthen security around the country.
In a statement, he said the directive was given at the meeting with security managers of companies using SPY Police for their internal security. He noted this measure is aimed at curtailing activities of criminally-minded persons who disguise in police uniform to perpetrate nefarious activities.
It was gathered that a newly designed grey and black trousers has been approved as the new uniform to be worn by spy police officers nationwide

Could 6.5 Hours Of Sleep Be All We Need?

A major complaint of our times is that the modern lifestyle – with its artificial lighting, electronic devices and supply of caffeine – has shortened sleep duration from ‘’natural’’ levels and disrupted its timing. But people who live away from the trappings of city life may sleep even less than us, according to research published in the journal Current Biology.
Sleeping only 6.5 hours a night may not be a sign that we need sleeping pills.
The supposed reduction in sleep duration has been linked to obesity, mood disorders and a number of other physical and mental illnesses thought to have increased recently; although complaints about sleep disorders have been documented since the 1880s.
New evidence now shows that three ancient groups of hunter-gatherers – living a traditional way of life in different parts of the world, without electricity, distractions and heating or cooling systems – sleep a little under 6.5 hours a night on average.
They do not take regular naps, nor do they go to sleep when darkness falls. In other words, their sleep habits are not significantly different from those in the industrialized world, although they usually do wake up before the sun rises.
In these societies, individuals are exposed from birth to natural sunlight, and a continuous seasonal and daily variation in temperature.
To investigate how people slept before the modern era, Jerome Siegel, of the University of California-Los Angeles, and his colleagues investigated three traditional human hunter-gatherer societies: the Hadza of Tanzania, the San of Namibia and the Tsimane of Bolivia.
They found the three groups surprisingly similar. Despite varying genetics, histories and environments, they all showed a similar sleep organization, suggesting that they express core human sleep patterns, probably characteristic of pre-modern-era Homo sapiens, according to Siegel.
Siegel said “The short sleep in these populations challenges the belief that sleep has been greatly reduced in the ‘modern’ world. This has important implications for the idea that we need to take sleeping pills because sleep has been reduced from its ‘natural level’ by the widespread use of electricity, TV, the Internet, and so on.”
It seems that sleep time may be more closely linked with temperature than with light. The ancient groups all went to sleep as the temperature fell and slept through the coldest part of the night, suggesting that the daily cycle of temperature change, largely eliminated from modern sleep environments, may help to regulate sleep.
One important difference between people in the “modern” world and the hunter-gatherers is that very few of them suffer from chronic insomnia, a common complaint in the US, affecting more than 20% of the population.
The researchers believe this raises an interesting possibility, in that if aspects of the natural environment experienced by these groups could be mimicked, this might help in treating certain modern sleep disorders, particularly insomnia.
