EFCC recovers N381m from wife of ex-Air Force Chief, Amosu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has recovered N381m from Mrs. Omolara Amosu, wife of the immediate past Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu.

EFCC sources told Punch that the money was recovered in three tranches: N180m, N101m and N100m.

The money was traced from the account of the Nigeria Air Force to the bank accounts of a company in which Amosu’s wife is a director and a signatory.

“We recovered N381m from Amosu’s wife, Omolara. Initially, we recovered N180m from her account before another N101m and then N100m. These were monies transferred from Air Force accounts,” a source said.
“They (Air Force officers) sent the money to an account where their wives have interests or are signatories without doing anything.”
Another source told the newspaper that more properties belonging to the immediate past Chief of Accounts and Budgeting of NAF, Air Vice Marshal J.B. Adigun, had been seized.

“Adigun is still here with us. We recovered a quarry which he owns. In the quarry there were pieces of equipment worth about $600,000. They have all been impounded and investigations are ongoing.”

New Discovery! Natural Solution That Puts An End To Men's Weak Erection Problem

Two weeks ago, houses worth over N2bn in Ikoyi and Victoria Island allegedly belonging to Adigun were seized.

Amosu, Adigun and over nine air force officers are currently under investigation by the anti-graft agency for the procurement of equipment which was said not to be transparent.

Since his detention, Amosu had been quizzed over the procurement of two second-hand Mi-24V Helicopters instead of the recommended Mi-35M series at a cost of $136.9m.

The helicopters were alleged not to be operationally airworthy at the time of delivery while a brand new unit of such helicopters costs about $30m.

Amosu and some other officers would be charged to court as soon as the holding charge which the EFCC obtained in court to hold the officers for 30 days from January 28 elapses in a few days.

Prospective UTME Applicants Protest Closure Of JAMB Portal

Prospective UTME Applicants protested against an alleged sudden closure of the JAMB online registration portal before the due date – “JAMB Don’t Deny us Our Right to Education,” Extend Registration,” and “We Want Tertiary Education”

Hundreds of prospective applicants for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have staged a peaceful protests in Benin City, Edo State, demanding extension of the online sale of UTME forms that closed recently.

They urged the examination body to re-open its portal, lamenting that they could not afford to stay another year without securing an admission.

Some of the parents of the applicants in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria have also joined their wards to express their displeasure with the act.

They noted that they were upset with the closure of the registration portal, stressing that it has denied the applicants a chance to sit for the 2016 exams which will hold next weekend.

But in a swift reaction to the protest the south-south zonal Coordinator of JAMB, Mrs Priscila Ogunsola, dismissed the claims by the students, insisting that JAMB gave enough time for the registration.

FUTA Adopts E-Voting for the 2016 Students Union Election

Election into various positions of the Students Union for the 2015 / 2016 academic session at the Federal University of Technology, Akure took a new dimension with the adoption of electronic voting system. The election which held at the Digital Resource Centre of the University on Thursday February 18, 2016 saw students vote candidates of their choice to various positions just by a click on the computer. Their identity cards was verified through a purposely designed card reader after which the voter proceeded to the voting area where they interfaced with programmed computers to cast their votes. After each vote a monitor at the control Centre recorded it and instantaneous tally of contestants score was displayed. The final result was ready as soon as the last student clicked on the computer to register his vote.

Dean, Students’ Affairs, Professor Kayode Alese said what informed the adoption of electronic voting system was because the University needed to showcase its leadership position in the area of cutting edge technology and research. According to him the process was very effective and an improvement on what other Institutions had done in the area of electronic voting. “Though other Institutions have adopted the process, ours is very unique because we made use of card readers. FUTA is the only Institution to have used card readers and we did not record any failure because we designed it in such a way that the contestant registered online and we have the record of registered students of this University”.

Speaking further, he said registered students on the University data base were the only ones allowed to vote thus any unregistered student could not vote as the card reader would have screened them out. “If you don’t have a valid identity card and your name is not on our data base you cannot vote” Alese stated. The don said that FUTA alumni designed the software adopted for the election at no cost. The card readers were customized for the purpose of the election.

Corroborating Alese, Chairman, Electoral Committee, Dr. Olutola Olubanjo commended the electoral process, saying the use of card readers really made the election process free and fair. It has also justified the University’s leadership position in technological advancement. Olubanjo said from start to finish, everything was electronic. “Students were accredited electronically through the use of card readers. Thereafter they proceeded to the voting proper using the computer which displayed the process to the candidates’ agents and security agents’. According to him, “It is a positive departure from the cumbersome old system of pen and paper. In fact it is innovative because no election in Nigeria has been done electronically. We commend management for this and suggest the adoption of the process for subsequent elections like Congregation and elections into offices in the Cooperative Societies”. Agents of the contestants expressed their satisfaction with the process which they claimed was a plus to the University. They also appreciated the management and the electoral committee for the innovation.

The Vice Chancellor Professor Adebiyi Daramola commended the electoral committee and the Students Affairs division for the adoption of the e voting system saying the University has once again validated its leading position in innovation and workable technology that the larger Nigerian society can benefit from.

The result of the election as announced in the presence of agents of contestants and security agents showed Oladele Segun aka Solar emerging President with a vote of 1,970.

Nigerian military, police, others can’t find Tompolo – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Friday told a federal judge that the whereabouts of Government Ekpemupolo, a former militant leader, were unknown.

Festus Keyamo, counsel to the EFCC, said a combined team of Nigerian police and military officers had been combing the creeks for weeks without success.

The judge had issued a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Ekpemupolo (also known as Tompolo) on February 8 after he shunned repeated invitations to appear before the EFCC for questioning.

Last week, the commission declared the ex-militant wanted.

“We wish to inform the court that the warrant of arrest that this court issued in respect of the first defendant (Mr. Ekpemupolo) has not been executed despite the best efforts of all the security agents in this country,” Mr. Keyamo told the judge on Friday.

“Every security agent in this country is involved in the search for the first defendant. What is unfolding is something that has never been seen before in this country for a very long time.”

Mr. Ekpemupolo and Patrick Akpobolokemi, the former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, are accused of a multibillion naira fraud at the agency.

Others charged alongside them are Global West Vessel Specialist Ltd, Odimiri Electrical Ltd, Kime Engozu, Boloboere Property and Estate Ltd, Rex Elem, Destre Consult Ltd, Gregory Mbonu, and Captain Warredi Enisuoh.

At the last court sitting, Tayo Oyetibo, who represented Mr. Ekpemupolo prayed the court to set aside an order of substituted service which the judge had earlier granted against his client.

In a short ruling, Justice Ibrahim Buba dismissed the application and renewed a warrant order it had earlier issued on the former militant leader.
“Up till today the first defendant has refused to honour the invitation of the court to appear before it,” the judge had said.

“The whole essence of service is to make the person aware of charges facing him. By bringing an application before the court, the first defendant had become aware of the charge before the court.”

On Friday, no lawyer announced appearance for Mr. Ekpemupolo, a situation the prosecution noted was disrespectful to the court.

“Having registered his appearance at the last sitting, the very senior counsel (Mr. Oyetibo) ought to have come to withdraw his appearance,” Mr. Keyamo said.

With Mr. Ekpemupolo still at large, Mr. Keyamo moved a motion for an adjournment to enable the prosecution separate the charges “so we can go on with the other accused persons”.

The prosecution counsel also filed an application urging the court to order the seizure of all identified properties belonging to Mr. Ekpemupolo.

The assets listed include property at No. 1 Chief Agbamu Close DDPA Extension Warri (Effurun), Delta State; all properties of Muhaabix Global Services Ltd; a River Crew Change Boat named MUHA – 15; the property known as “Tompolo Dockyard”, by the end of Enerhen Road, Effurun, Warri.

Others are a property known as “Tompolo Yard”, at the end of Chevron Clinic Road, next to Next Oil, Edjeba, Warri; the Diving School at Kurutie, at Escravos River; the property known as “Tompolo House” at Oporaza Town, opposite the Palace; and any other property discovered by the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission, moveable and immoveable, belonging to the first accused person.
“This application is to further secure the attendance of the first accused person. The law says that the court can order the confiscation of his properties until he appears,” Mr. Keyamo said.

“Any third party can bring an application later, but we have intelligence reports that those properties and companies belong to the first accused person.

“If he fails to appear within three months, the federal government will auction off all the assets.”

In his ruling, the judge granted the order for the seizure of all the listed properties and adjourned till March 22 for the separation of the charges on the defendants.

Abuja-Kaduna train for launch May – Amaechi

The minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said the Abuja-Kaduna rail project is 100 per cent completed and will be launched in May.

Mr. Amaechi announced this at Idu, Abuja, on Thursday, while inspecting the project along with the contractors, China Civil Engineering Construction Company.

According to him, before the launch by President Muhammadu Buhari, the rail would be test-run in March, adding that during that period, passengers will board for free.

“The essence of my tour is to enable us assess whether we are ready for commercial activities and I think we are. I will be travelling from Abuja to Kaduna tomorrow through the rail.
“In March, they should start the test-run of the rail services for free, then the proper commercial activity will start in May, where we expect the president to flag-off the use of coaches,” he said.

He said N150 billion would be used to execute the national rail project, with another N60 billion for the Lagos-Kano standard gauge and yet another N60 billion for the Lagos-Calabar project.

“What we are doing is implementation of what we met in office. We are not among those who will abandon good ideas.

“If we see an idea that is good, we will adopt it. The Lagos-Kano project was awarded by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and we are flying with it.

“The Lagos-Calabar project was awarded by former President Goodluck Jonathan and we are also flying with it. What we are doing is implementing those projects that have not been implemented for so many years,” the minister said.

He further said Idu, the location of the rail, was too far from the city centre, adding that the contractor should make provisions for temporary stations in the city.

Mr. Amaechi suggested that since the Abuja light rail project was yet to commence, the tracks could be used to pick passengers from the city centre to Kaduna.

“The Abuja light rail is expected to start from Abuja and de-board passengers at Idu from where such passengers will move to Kaduna but since the Abuja light rail is not ready, we shall use their tracks to continue to pick passengers from Abuja until they are ready and then we will disengage the temporary facility.

“The role of the station is to convey passengers to Idu, where they will be transferred to the national rail line to proceed to Kaduna,” he explained.
He said the only challenge with the project was the fencing aspect.

Boko Haram now hiding in Sambisa Forest- Buhari

President Buhari says Boko Haram members are now hiding in Sambisa forest after they were chased away from all the Local government they hitherto held captive before he came into office. Buhari said this while addressing members of the diplomatic corps during a reception he organized in their honor at the state house yesterday February 18th
"It is worthy to note that when I assumed office on May 29th 2015, Boko Haram had full control of fourteen (14) Local Government areas in the North East, but today, the group holds no territory in Nigeria.

They are hiding in Sambisa forest and occasionally undertake cowardly attacks on innocent citizens in soft targets"he said

Pope Francis says Donald Trump's behaviour 'is not Christian', Trump fires back saying Pope's comments are disgraceful

Pope Francis has said that U.S Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's plan to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border if voted into office is "not Christian." The Pope said this on Thursday while speaking aboard his papal plane after visiting Mexico and when asked about Donald Trump's plans if he's elected into office.

"A person who only thinks about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian," he said

According to reporters who were on the plane with the pontiff. The pope stressed that he was not suggesting whom American voters should vote in the election:

"I am not going to get involved in that. I would only say that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that."he said

Upon hearing the Popes comments, Trump fired back quickly with a strongly worded statement.

'If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’s ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President because this would not have happened. ISIS would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians. ' 'The Mexican government and its leadership has made many disparaging remarks about me to the Pope, because they want to continue to rip off the United States, both on trade and at the border, and they understand I am totally wise to them. The Pope only heard one side of the story - he didn’t see the crime, the drug trafficking and the negative economic impact the current policies have on the United States. He doesn’t see how Mexican leadership is outsmarting President Obama and our leadership in every aspect of negotiation.' 'For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian and as President I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current President. No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith. They are using the Pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant.''

As word of the Pope's comments about Trump spread on social media, Trump's social media director, Dan Scavino, posted this tweet:
