INEC Cancels Election In Eight LGAs In Rivers State

Rivers-State Election Re-run

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cancelled re-run election in eight local government areas of Rivers State.

Addressing reporters on Sunday, a day after the re-run election, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak, said that the cancelation was due to irregularities at the affected local government areas.
Election held in Etche and Asari-Toru Local Government Areas were the latest to be cancelled.

In a press statement, the INEC official said: “Further to our earlier pronouncement on the suspension of the re-run in the six Local Government Areas of Khana, Bonny, Gokana, Andoni, Tai and Eleme, following disturbances and violence that impeded the electoral process in those parts of the state, it has become necessary to suspend elections in Etche and Asari-Toru LGAs for the same reasons.

“Please note that the suspension of the re-run elections by INEC is necessitated by the need to forestall breakdown of law and order in the event of further aggravation of crisis.

“INEC needs to put all stakeholders on notice that we are still studying the situation in the other fifteen LGAs, where collations are currently going on”.

So far, re-run election has been canceled in Khana, Bonny, Gokana, Andoni, Tai and Eleme, Etche and Asari-Toru Local Government Areas.

INEC said it is reviewing the rest of the process in the re-run polls while collation of results are ongoing.

Congo Presidential Elections: Telephone, internet and SMS services shut down for 2days

All forms of media and communication have been shut down for 48 hours in Congo's presidential election as President Denis Sassou Nguesso aims to prolong his 32-year rule over the oil-rich but economically poor African nation.
Interior Minister Raymond Mboulou wrote to telecommunication companies urging them to shut off telephone, internet and SMS services for 48 hours for "reasons of security and national safety".

AFP News agency said a government source told them that the media blackout was to ensure there was no 'illegal' publication of Sunday's results.

The president, Sassou Nguesso  has said he has no doubt he will beat his eight rivals, describing election day as a "penalty kick and then victory".

Majority of Congolese citizens want a change of government but the efforts of the opposition were hampered when a public referendum backed removing a two-term limit that would have kept 72-year-old Sassou Ngeusso from power. The vote also removed a 70-year age limit for the presidency ensuring he could contest in this year's elections.

Dangote Group Sponsors 800 Nigerians To Understudy Refinery Operations In India

President of Dangote Group and Africa’s richest man, is sending about 800 Nigerians to India, to learn the operations of a petrochemical refinery...

A source in the multi-billion naira company, Dangote Group, has exclusively confirmed to TheCable on Friday that billionaire business mogul and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, is sending about 800 Nigerians to India, to learn the operations of a petrochemical refinery, adding that the first batch to be trained will leave for India on Sunday, March 20, 2016.

It was learnt that the 800 Nigerians will travel to the Asian country over the next 24 months in a batch of fifties, to learn from the nation with the largest refinery in the world.

India is home to the world’s largest refinery, Jamnagar Refinery Reliance Industries, Jamnagar, which refines as much as 1.2 million barrels per day.

“About 800 will be trained in batches within 24 months. The first batch of 50 is leaving for India on Sunday,” the source said.

Dangote is looking to creating employment within the Nigerian economy, rather than importing expatriates to run the first private refinery in Nigeria.

The refinery, projected to worth $9 billion, is being built to have a refining capacity of about 500,000 to 650,000 barrels per day.

“After receiving a private licence to build a refinery, Dangote has commenced the building of a 650,000 barrel per day (BPD) petroleum refinery, which will be the single largest in the world.

“The refinery would have a larger capacity than all of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) refineries put together,” the conglomerate said in a statement more than a year ago.

Dangote, who hosted Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), at the site of the refinery in January, assured Nigerians that the refinery would be ready to meet the nation’s need by 2018.

Humility is the epitome of redemption, Pope says on Palm Sunday

Pope Francis leads procession of palms in St. Peter's Square on Palm Sunday March 20, 2016. Credit: Daniel Ibáñez/EWTN.

On Palm Sunday Pope Francis said the path toward salvation can be summed up by humility and service, and encouraged pilgrims to contemplate Jesus’ shameful Passion and Death throughout Holy Week.

“Today’s liturgy teaches us that the Lord has not saved us by his triumphal entry or by means of powerful miracles,” the Pope said March 20.

Instead, in the day’s second reading from St. Paul to the Philippians, the apostle “epitomizes in two verbs the path of redemption: Jesus ‘emptied’ and ‘humbled’ himself.”

These two verbs, Francis said, “show the boundlessness of God’s love for us. Jesus emptied himself: he did not cling to the glory that was his as the Son of God, but became the Son of man in order to be in solidarity with us sinners in all things; yet he was without sin.”

Jesus chose to take on the condition of a servant rather than that of a king or a prince, the Pope observed, adding that “the abyss” of Jesus’ humiliation seems to be “bottomless” as Holy Week approaches.

However, just as he entered Jerusalem on the back of a donkey, Jesus also wants to enter our lives and cities in the same way, Francis said. “He comes to us in humility; he comes in the name of the Lord.”

Pope Francis spoke to the thousands of pilgrims present in St. Peter’s Square for his Palm Sunday Mass.

Before opening the celebration, he blessed the palms used in the day’s liturgy from the obelisk in St. Peter’s Square, and led a procession up to the main altar.

After listening to the lengthy account of Jesus’ Passion and Death from the Gospel of Luke, Francis told attendees that the first sign of Jesus’ humble and endless love in Holy Week is expressed in the washing of his disciples’ feet on Holy Thursday.

By washing their feet, Jesus shows us by example “that we need to allow his love to reach us, a love which bends down to us,” he said.

“We cannot do any less, we cannot love without letting ourselves be loved by him first, without experiencing his surprising tenderness and without accepting that true love consists in concrete service.”

However, Francis noted that this act is “only the beginning,” and that Jesus’ humiliation reaches its climax during his Passion, when he is sold for 30 pieces of silver and betrayed by the kiss of a man whom he had chosen and called as his disciple, and whom he called a friend.

In addition to Judas’ betrayal, Jesus is abandoned by nearly all the rest of his disciples, he is denied by Peter three times, and is humiliated by mockery, spitting, insults and physical beatings.

Jesus “suffers in his body terrible brutality: the blows, the scourging and the crown of thorns make his face unrecognizable,” the Pope said, noting how Jesus was also shamed by the condemnation of religious and political leaders.

In being sent from Pilate to Herod and then back to the Roman governor, Jesus experiences indifference “in his own flesh,” because “no one wishes to take responsibility for his fate,” Francis observed.

Even the crowd, who had previously welcomed him, call for his crucifixion and ask that a murderer be released instead, the Pope recalled. This then leads to Jesus’ death in the “most painful form of shame” intended for traitors, slaves and the worst of criminals.

However, as if his isolation, defamation and pain weren’t enough, Jesus takes it a step further, Pope Francis said, explaining that in order to be in complete solidarity with man, “he also experiences on the Cross the mysterious abandonment of the Father.”

Jesus faces his final temptation while hanging from the Cross, when he is challenged to come down and save himself. Though instead of giving in, the Lord entrusts himself to his Father in order to conquer evil for good and show the face “of a powerful and invincible God,” he said.

Francis explained that even at “the height of his annihilation, (Jesus) reveals the true face of God, which is mercy,” by forgiving those who crucify him, moving the heart of the centurion and promising paradise to the repentant thief.

“If the mystery of evil is unfathomable, then the reality of Love poured out through him is infinite, reaching even to the tomb and to hell,” the Pope said.

Jesus, he added, “takes upon himself all our pain that he may redeem it, bringing light to darkness, life to death, love to hatred.”

Pope Francis concluded his homily by noting how God’s way of acting seems to be distant from our own, since “he was annihilated for our sake, while it seems difficult for us to even forget ourselves a little.”

“He comes to save us; we are called to choose his way: the way of service, of giving, of forgetfulness of ourselves,” he said, and encouraged attendees to pause during Holy Week to contemplate the Crucifix.

By humbling himself, Jesus invites us to walk the same path, Francis said, urging pilgrims to ask him “for the grace to understand something of the mystery of his obliteration for our sake; and then, in silence, let us contemplate the mystery of this week.”

After Mass Pope Francis greeted youth present for the 31st World Youth Day, the national celebration of which will take place July 25-31 in Krakow, and led pilgrims in praying the Angelus.

Opulent Lifestyle: Group Petitions EFCC To Investigate Senator Dino Melaye

An anti-corruption coalition, Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately invite and investigate the Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, over what it termed excessively flamboyant and opulent lifestyle of the lawmaker.

According to the petition sent to the anti-graft commission and signed by CSNAC's chairman, Mr. Olanrewaju Suraju, the group said the EFCC should invoke its powers under Section 6(h) of the Act that sets it up and probe the embarrassing display of opulence by Melaye.

The petition reads: "In its report of July 31st, 2015, Saharareporters, an online newspaper, said that Senator Dino Melaye purchased a home in Abuja estimated at a whopping 1.3 billion Naira (6.5 million US dollars). The said property which is located at 11 Sangha Street, off Mississippi Street, in the Maitama upscale neighborhood of the city, boasts leafy trees, ornate Roman-style columns, and decadent chandeliers hanging from its high ceilings. According to the report, the property is currently undergoing some renovations with an indoor swimming pool."

CSNAC said the report further reiterated its earlier report of Senator Melaye's gloating on social media about his wealth and luxury toys, which included imported sports cars, a Harley Davidson motorcycle, and even novelty champagne branded with his face on the bottle. He had also previously told SaharaTV that he made N1.4m from his first month of holding public office.

"When asked by a SaharaReporters correspondent about his source of money for the payment of his luxurious house, the only response offered was, “I am a distinguished member of the Federal government.” When further prodded by the correspondent that his assets were a matter of public interest, the question was ignored.

"This is also coupled with the fact that Senator Melaye’s consistent presence in the entourage of Toyin Saraki (wife of Senate President Bukola Saraki) as she faced corruption investigations at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has continued to arouse the curiosity of right thinking Nigerians.
"It is trite that the Commission is empowered by the provision of Section 7(1) (b) of  the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act 2004 which states as follows:

The Commission has power to-

"Cause investigations to be conducted into the properties of any person if it appears to the Commission that the person's lifestyle and extent of the properties are not justified by his source of income."

The group said that the excessively flamboyant and opulent lifestyle of Senator Dino Melaye, who is a public officer, calls for serious questioning and investigation. "As a public officer, his assets are a matter of public interest. His obscene public display of wealth not supported by any other known means of livelihood is not justified by the allowances of a public officer.
"Therefore, he should be made to justify these rapacious and brazen accumulation to the EFCC. With the prevailing rate of crimes and criminality, involving highly placed personalities and political office holders, no person or individual should be considered sacred.

"CSNAC is therefore by this petition requesting the Commission to invoke its powers under Section 6(h) of the aforementioned Act:

The Commission shall be responsible for -

"The examination and investigation of all reported cases of Economic and Financial Crimes with a view to identifying individuals, corporate bodies or groups involved."

"And launch an investigation into this matter by inviting Senator Dino Melaye to give a detailed explanation of the source(s) of income utilized in the finance and acquisition of his various expensive assets. More importantly, to clear any form of speculation that his assets might have been acquired through activities in contravention of any financial law(s) in Nigeria," the petition reads.
