Female teenage suicide bomber gets cold feet, refuses to kill

Strapped with a booby-trapped vest and sent by Boko Haram to kill as many people as possible, the young teenage girl tore off the explosives and fled as soon as she was out of sight of her handlers.

Her two companions, however, completed their grisly mission and walked into a crowd of hundreds at Dikwa refugee camp in northeast Nigeria and blew themselves up, killing 58 people.

Later found by local self-defense forces, the girl's tearful account is one of the first indications that at least some of the child bombers used by Boko Haram are aware that they are about to die and kill others.

"She said she was scared because she knew she would kill people, but she was also frightened of going against the instructions of the men who brought her to the camp," said Modu Awami, a self-defense fighter who helped question the girl".

Her story was corroborated when she led soldiers to the unexploded vest, Awami said Thursday by phone from the refugee camp, which holds 50,000 people who have fled Boko Haram's Islamic uprising.

The girl is in custody and has given officials information about other planned bombings that has helped them increase security at the camp, Satomi Ahmed, chairman of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, told reporters.

Awami said he had no information about how the girl came to be with Boko Haram. The extremists have kidnapped thousands of people and there are fears they may be turning their captives into weapons.

An army bomb disposal expert has told the AP that some suicide bombs are detonated remotely, so the carriers may not have control over when the bomb goes off.

Even two days later, it's difficult to say exactly how many people died at Dikwa because there were corpses and body parts everywhere, including in the cooking pots, Awami said.

"Women, children, men and aged persons all died," he said by telephone. "I cannot say the exact number as some cannot be counted because the bodies were all mangled."

Boko Haram not holding any Nigerian territory - Buhari

President Buhari says despite the recent attacks by Boko Haram members in some parts of Borno state, the group has now been decimated to the point where they do not have a hold on any Local government area in Nigeria. Buhari said this while speaking with the visiting President of Germany, Joachim Gauck, at the statehouse today Feb 11th

“It is a pity Boko haram welcomed you by explosions in Maiduguri that took so many lives, but I have attempted to explain in so many fora that Boko haram is not what it used to be. While they were firmly holding 14 out of 774 local governments when we came in, they are not holding any local government now. What they have resorted to is using improvised explosive devices to cause maximum casualties on soft targets as they did yesterday,” he said.

Dozens killed in Mexico’s prison riot

DOZENS of people have been killed in a riot at a prison in northeastern Mexico, according to local media.
At least 50 people died after a riot broke out in the early hours of yesterday local time in the prison of Topo Chico, in the state of Nuevo Leon, Milenio TV reported.

TV images showed police vehicles patrolling the streets near the prison.
Milenio reported that relatives who visited prisoners in the jail had heard gunshots and said that a blaze had broken out.

They also said that they had seen inmates with burns and that authorities were hunting for escapees.

The number killed in the riot has not yet been confirmed by security officials.

The Nuevo Leon state government said on Twitter that the situation had been brought under control, but gave no details on what had happened at the prison.

The casualties included inmates and prison guards, local media said.
Families of the inmates rushed to the prison after reports of deaths.

UNILAG Medical Students Protest Change In Cut-Off Marks

Undergraduate students of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Wednesday shut down the gates to the university to protest the university’s decision to increase the cut-off marks they must meet in order to continue their medical training.

According to the students, they got the shock of their lives when they turned up at the College of Medicine for resumption of both academic and practical courses and they were turned back by the College management saying the new quota system will not be able to accommodate all of them.

“Despite meeting all stipulated conditions, paid required fees, all the management could tell us is that we are not welcome at the College of Medicine. How possible can Medicine and Surgery students be refused the rights to study in College of Medicine? It is sheer callousness,” Moji Adenekan, a protesting MMBS student said.

The UNILAG Head, Information Unit, Mr. Toyin Adebule, made this known in a statement on Wednesday night.

According to him, UNILAG authorities will not want to flout such directive, as those admitted outside the quota will not be allowed to practice after graduation.

The statement read in part, “This year, the professional bodies have insisted on the enforcement of the quota upon which accreditation is hinged and hence the college has had to conform. What this means is that only students that are indexed will be registered by the professional bodies to practice after graduation.

“Senate at its meeting held on Wednesday, 27th January, 2016 had approved the implementation of the re-arrangement to conform to the professional bodies’ quota in order not to lose accreditation. This has regrettably meant that we have only been able to receive students into the college only up to the number the College of Medicine is allowed by the quota.

“We recognise and regret that this has led to some students being unable to cross over into the College of Medicine or their course of choice. Consequently, all candidates who were not successful to be placed in programmes in CMUL have been allocated to appropriate programmes on the main campus in Akoka.”

6 Ways To Make Your Boyfriend Feel Special this Valentine

All over the world, Valentine’s Day is celebrated as a day of love and passion and every year partners think of innovative ways to please their loved one. Your worry is legitimate. It is one special day for you, your boyfriend and the relationship, you two are involved in, so make the best use out of it. You want to make him feel special? We tell you how:

Compliment him
You think only we love compliments? No. Men love to be complemented, probably more than we do. He knows the importance of his day and I am sure he has bought a new suit for the day. When you see him, compliment him. Appreciate him for his efforts to look good. Just do not stop admiring the present he gives you. One more thing, JUST DO NOT LET YOUR EYES OF HIM. Trust me, this will make his day.

Act like a lady
Yes, we know you have been a tomboy all your life, but just this one day, act like a lady. Talk softly and talk less, and think before you utter any words out of your mouth. Being a lady, does not want you to act rich, but act decent. Do not forget those courtesy words and keep your attitude tamed. Be polite and ensure that your body posture is accurate. Do not worry, it is just one day we are talking about.

Look your best
Eyes are the windows to the heart, right? Then, on this special day, look nothing but your best. Hit the parlor if needed. Put on your best dress, have the best hair out fit, and do not forget your heels. The parlor will take care of your makeup. Dress up so that he fails to look at anything, but you. This will also help him realize, that you wish to spend your efforts, to look good for him. After today, your boyfriend should fall in love with you all over again.

Shower him with gifts
Those NIKE shoes that he always wanted or the overpriced Rolex, that he has been eyeing for since ages, gift him what he has been wanting. Men do not express much, but they always seek out for presents from their partner, and seem to treasure them forever. Throw him with multiple presents. Do not worry about the money for his smile and happiness will be totally worth it. However, be very choosy. An inappropriate gift might ruin the day.

Do not fail to express your love
This is the day, woman; this is the day, when you need to express all the love and affection, you have for your boyfriend. This is the day, when he needs to know, how he makes you feel. This is the day, when he needs to be reminded of all the butterflies, he has ever given you. This is the day, when all the words, beautifully put up together, would mean the world to him. Make this day count, make this day special.

Lots of surprises
Expecting surprises from him? How about you throw him some, for a change? How about a match in the stadium with him? How about ordering his favorite Italian, instead of the continental you like? Let him be on the receiving side this time to enjoy all the favors. A surprise would do no harm, right?

5 Things She Wants From You on This Valentine’s Day

A lot of girls are said to be expressive. It is true to some extent because women tend to share whatever is in their heart. They don’t like to hide stuff. However, there comes a point in the relationship when the two of you become different from you were in the start. From being that talkative girl who told you all, she is now someone who doesn’t talk about what she wants at all times. There are a few things she wants from you and I believe that Valentine’s Day is a good way to start for those things:

•Make her your best friend•
If you ever ask a woman what she really wants from a relationship, then the first thing she will say is that she wants to be his best friend. Our best friend is someone who sees our truest side and knows our most difficult side as well. She wants to be that person for you because she wants to be your favorite secret keeper. She wants to be the first person you call when you want to celebrate your achievement. She wants to be the first person you call to cry when you want to cry over something. She wants to be that special person to you.

•Listen to her•
A lot of time, women complain that her guy doesn’t listen to her. It is true that after some time, you start feeling like all she does is talk about useless things. You feel like she annoys you with her constant irrational talk that is doing no one any good. However, have you ever noticed that when she talks her heart out to you, even if it is some stupid story that she is telling you, she is glowing. She has this shine in her eyes because she is excited over it. You should at least have the audacity to listen to her. She wants you to pay attention to her. If you are annoyed, just let her know that now is not the good time to talk and she will stop.

•Talk to her•
If you think that all she wants from you is to listen to her, you couldn’t be anymore wrong. Just as much as she wants to be heard, she also wants to hear from you. People often joke about how a man’s day can go ‘fine’ when he goes to work out while for a woman, she has a million things to share even if she was at home the whole day. Women want exclusivity. They want to hear from the guy and they like being the only person they talk to. So take out time and talk to her. Share how your day went and she will feel great.

•Share your feelings with her•
She wants to hear from you in a sense that she wants to know your feelings. You might have been wronged by a few women in your life. You have trust issues now and you have trouble talking your heart out because you feel that she might manipulate you. You have to convince yourself that this is the woman you love and that she deserves to hear all about you. So gather up courage and start with baby steps. Talk your heart out with her.

•Love carelessly•
Men are always careful. It is funny how they can love with caution as well. She wants the opposite. She wants you to love her carelessly. She wants you to share your heart out with her without having any fears or doubts. If you really have trust issues with her, let her know. You should never be with a person that you have trouble trusting.

2016 Budget: Nigeria runs to China for loan

Nigeria is set to secure a loan from China to finance the 2016 budget, Reuters is reporting.

According the report, Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, and Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), are to visit China for the $2 billion loan.

The loan is aimed at the financing of budget 2016 with a record deficit of about N2.2 trillion.

According to Reuters, any loan agreed during Adeosun’s trip could be signed by President Muhammadu Buhari in Beijing by March.

“The finance minister, in the company of the central bank governor, is scheduled to be in China sometime next week to conclude negotiations on the $2 billion loan.

Hopefully it may be sorted out during this meeting and the loan will be signed during President Buhari’s visit to China in March this year, ” the official said.

Adeosun had earlier said the country was looking for a loan with about 1.5 percent interest. “We looked at our debt profile and we recognised that one big problem is interest rate. So, we are going to try and borrow as far as possible externally,” she said at a KPMG forum in Lagos.

“We are borrowing first of all at the cheapest rates. So, multilateral loans are the cheapest. “If someone offers me 1.5 per cent over 20 years, I think I should take it. So, that is why we are going to the multilateral agencies first and thereafter concessional borrowing and also tap into the Eurobond market.

“We are doing about N900 billion of the deficit in domestic and N900 billion in external borrowings. We are trying not to crowd out the private sector in the domestic debt market, that is why we are looking at external borrowings also.”

Meanwhile, the information communications and technology industry across the country are to enjoy tax holidays and special intervention funds from the federal government.

This is to enable them to meaningfully help government to realize the creation of three million jobs targeted by 2018.

The minister of communications, Adebayo Shittu, and Afolabi Imoukhuede, senior special adviser to the President on job creation/youth empowerment office of the Vice President, gave this hint when the Minister visited Yaba Technology Ecosystem Hubs in Lagos.

“As you all know, the ICT innovations is powering economies across the globe, creating employments and wealth. It is impacting on the way we live and the way we do businesses; the Buhari administration is at the forefront of diversifying our economy and he is resolved to develop the ICT sector through Local Content initiative. Government will support Yaba and all ICT hubs across the country because it is a veritable platform to achieve our ICT and job creations objective.

“We are going to replicate what is happening here in Yaba in other parts of the country in partnership with stakeholders. We are going to start in Ibadan and Katsina state in the next three months. Both the governors of Oyo and Katsina have agreed to provide facilities for the establishment of these hubs,” the said while expressing satisfaction at the infrastructures he saw.
